How can you tell if your hive is preparing to swarm? Let's open up a bee hive and I'll show you what I look for to detect early warning signs of a swarm. Reading your hive and knowing when they might swarm makes beekeeping so much more fun.
I have many opportunities for you to continue learning what you need to know to be a better beekeeper:

Hi David, I met you recently at the Mason Valley Beekeepers conference in Yerington, Nv. I told you that you and your videos are my favorite. Thanks for continuing to post them. I really enjoy them and always learn something new. I'm going into my fifth year of beekeeping this spring 2023. I am one of those baby boomers who started beekeeping as a hobby, and it has become my passion. I also love your porch setup and decor. It's a wonderful spot for coffee!

Hey Wyatt, nice to meet you in Yerington and I'm coming back in 2024 and looking forward to it!! Glad you like my video and video set up. It is constantly a work in progress. Wind is my biggest handicap on filming. I'm trying to move my 20 studio hives to a less windy area, but weather is not good enough yet.

Great coffee time, David. I used to be a ham, but let it lapse in 2011. New hobby: bees! My dad was an electrician too! Missed him for 17th Fathers Day now. I was thinking of him as I had a home wiring project today.

Good to hear George. Tonight on my ham I talked to an airline pilot over the gulf all the way from Illinois, then into New York, Virginia, and Canada. It's a blast. I often wired houses with my dad as a teenager, pulling wires through conduit.

Oh wow. I loved the radio stuff as a kid (still do)but had no access..I had wires hanging all over for antennas with no real success in my experiment with what ever I could find to hook to the wire. I soon discovered the wire brought a LOT of sparks into the house to jump across to the window screen during a thunder storm....Would have died for your bedroom full of electronics and a bit of help to go with it! But never got it.....had to settle for a cheap cassette you plugged into the wall and finally into stereo stuff. Oh to go back and do it all over again! Keep up the videos! I've learned a lot! ...Oh, at 10.50. Don't refer to any woman as old if you want to live happily ever after. lol!

I invited the Winter-Bee-Kind feeding system for winter survival, so those go on the hive before winter in place of the inner cover, so I just got out of the habit of using them.

What state do you live in and are you absolutely sure it was an Asian hornet? Lots of wasps are big and looks a lot like them. Some people see cicada killers and consider them to be Asian Hornets.
