It’s so true what @garryhancock3394 said about this video. I’m in a Bee club and I learned more in this video than a full year of beekeeping. I’m in the highlands in Australia so we are getting ready for winter. My last inspection will be tomorrow and testing before spring in September. Did you have any tips for 1st year wintering for new beekeepers?

I don't know how I can possibly improve on the comments your past viewers have left. Ditto on all of them. You definitely do a wonderful job at educating us. I have watched, like one said, countless hours of bee videos, and you definitely do the best job. This was the first one of your videos I found and watched, it definitely won't be the last. You can read the passion on your face and hear it in your voice when you talk about the pest problems. I wish I lived next door to you. I don't have a hive yet, but I'm sure it's in the cards. I've been watching these videos for a while now, trying to get as much education as I can before I dive in to it. Thanks so much for being here. Past bed time my time, Florida. I'm up at 4 and in here watching gardening and honey bee videos for a couple hours while my old body warms up and I get rolling. See ya again soon.

Love your videos! You're a great teacher. I enjoy learning new things from people who have extensive experience and knowledge of a subject. Watching you handle those frames without a suit or gloves was amazing. I'm not that brave yet lol. Plus my bees are the Russian ones. They're supposed to be a little more aggressive, but on the plus side they are said to be resistant to varroa mites and also cold hardy. Will see I just got them in March of this year. Looking good so far. Thank you for sharing your wonderful knowledge. It's helping alot.

I agree! That's why I really encourage my students to just sit outside their hive and watch the bees come and go. You will learn 100 times more just by being in their presence and it will make you a better beekeeper. Gadgets make things easier, but nothing replaces the beekeeper intuition you will develop when you learn about bee behavour.

Great video Leresa. After going on a beginners bee keeping course now have my first hive and look through the frames weekly at the local bee keepers club where lots of other beginners keep their hives. It is so helpful learning with an experienced bee keeper going around inspecting each hive with their owners and with lots of questions and observations being made. Find this hands on approach gaining experence from others noting problems and repetitivness really useful in drumming home knowledge. Also with the help of watching numerous online videos from professionals like yourself talking and listening to scientist about latest developments coming through on how to tackle diseases.

Hi, this is Eberhard from Oschatz-Germany. This is a super video. I teach jung beekeepers. Your video is super. I was able to take some screenshots of your video. I like the way you are doing hive inspection without smoke

For whatever reason, I've never used the smoker much. I'm not sure why. It can be helpful, but since the bees are usually pretty calm, I don't have much of a need for it I guess.

I just started this year and have two very healthy hives so far. I’m looking forward to splitting and adding double the hives each year up to 200. So far this is the most informative channel on bees that I have found! Subscribed and will be back! Thanks so much.

Nice! That's very ambitious but also doable :) I started with just 2 hives and caught some swarms and just kept splitting the strong ones. It can be done. Sometimes, the hardest part is getting all that equipment and finding land for them. One word of advice - it can be tempting to split every hive with enough brood (I made that mistake). But not all hives are strong and hard workers. It's better to have 20 strong, good producing hives than 100 hives that aren't as strong. Keep requeening the colonies with poor genetics.

Don't be frustrated when your hives get wiped out. You always have hive losses no matter how experienced you are. The secret is to have lots of hives.

@@tomcurran1538 >Sounds like great advice. I was talking to a beekeeper who lost all his hives three years running before he just started having success. Now he has an annual ‘dead hive’ rate of about 30% annually and as long as he just keeps doing the common sense maintenance and splitting before swarming he keeps growing. I think that’s a very practical model to follow as far as expectations. We just started a rabbitry and no endeavor just flows smoothly and successfully from the start!….of course….rabbits are easier to breed because they breed like….well……RABBITS!

Very good, informative video. I am in my 4th year. Went from 1 hive to 5 and have caught several swarms. It is fun but also work. And yes, I have lost hives also. And oh yeah, been stung too. Keep up the good videos, you are a great teacher.

Thank you! I appreciate you taking the time to comment :) Great job expanding your apiary! That's exactly what I try to get my students to do -expand to at least 5 hives over the summer. That way it's not a big deal if one or two hives don't make it. That's nature and your apiary can bounce back.

well done. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, and explaining step by step with photos. We are first time beekeepers. I thought I would be the assistant, however I've been promoted to head keeper as hubs has taken on other work projects and no longer has time.
