Love the addition of Google trends for quantitative data! I totally agree that you're ahead of the curve on androgynous fashion and moving away from cutesy bows, but I also theorize that the bows had more lasting power and longevity as a trend to the GP *because* of the election anxiety (and the outcome). I think that there is something self-soothing about dressing more childishly as an adult when feeling powerless or helpless, because you're the one making the choice to sort of regress back into the more helpless state of a child.

If trend sales have gone up, a great contribution is the availability to curvy women. No longer relegated to only dark solid colors to make us look smaller, we are opting for the bold brights that match our hearts and desires! And….the key word for me is not casual but the word comfortable.

I’m Nordic, Baltic, and Slavic, and I’ve been super into adding folk elements this year, and was hoping to see more of that becoming a thing… think the whole “boho” “cultural revolution” fashion rise in the 70’s where they just kind of appropriated a whole bunch of different cultures folk dressing, except everyone is encouraged to derive creative ideas from their own cultures. This partly started when I realized I was wearing my grandma’s rings every day, then bought a Baltic Amber pendant as a sort of “totem” to feel closer to my family… think boho chic don’t right-meets family heirloom pieces- meets personalized handmade craft items…. The possibilities are beautiful and ENDLESS!

This got me noodling on how to quantify "trendy" vs "mainstream". If you're looking at google search data, maybe the percent increase is more valuable than the number of searches itself? Also how to best include seasonality? So fun so complicated
@beepwrldАй бұрын
it is so complicated!! These graphics do only show percent increase rather than the number of searches, which I think makes sense to track trends, but I can't even see the actual search quantity for a lot of these things! Also thinking of seasonality is why I started including so many comparing all of 2023 to all of 2024 rather than just a year ago vs now. even when data is subjective, our interpretations are always biased!
@marymcnally2552Ай бұрын

Okay I literally was referring to my entire summer as “Lobster Girl Summer” a move which ended up kicking off a tiny lobster plush knit along in Lindsay Degen’s Knit Club, but I can’t say for sure if this was influenced BY YOU cus I def watched that video last year 😂 Anyway I went full lobster, wearing my mini plush as a bag charm, investing in a vintage gold lobster charm and having a nautical nail set with a lobster that crossed three nails in the peak of summer. On another note, I am still hanging on to bows, and def still seeing them places (Damson Madder this fall and winter is still full up on bows) but I do think I am incorporating them in with other stuff that is more androgynous for sure, so it’s more balanced and less straight girly.

You really have the nose for trends! If I may make a somewhat negative remark: while the idea of putting a high-pass audio filter over your past videos works very well narratively, I think you must have set the resonance too high (I don't know what parameters your editing software allow you to modify) and it's creating a lot of high frequencies that are quite unpleasant :( It's really just a matter of form, the video itself is well-written and enjoyable to watch

oh this is really interesting! i wonder if the lack of reaction to ai is actually kind of a good thing - it’s been taken up everywhere and has impacted mine and other people’s industries but with almost no impact on the culture in a meaningful way. which is strange when you think about it. like ai (as in large language models) are low key not particularly threatening long term right now? like if they really were, surely we’d be seeing a much more existential reaction in the culture at large. there’s been so many issues with them im sorta expecting companies to quietly scale back in a few years after this weird patch. imho i see a lot of the diy trends you where talking about as a response to the amount screen time imbedded in people’s lives (particularly social media). that actually seems like the bigger issue to the culture at large at the moment. so maybe a little bit of credit to ai speeding up the creation of slop content. i took up crocheting this year in part to replace phone scrolling with a different activity, and wonder if other people are doing the same (10/10 do recommend if anyone is interested in cutting down their screen time).

As a data scientist, I think her use of keywords and charts wasn't so bad! I liked seeing the full two-year timeframe as opposed to two snippets for comparison with possibly differing axes. I think perhaps the Sherpa jacket and plaid flannel shirt graphs are too close (and too heavily seasonally driven) to really say whether they're truly up based on graph alone. There's always going to be a tradeoff between conclusive "change" in either an upwards or downwards direction, and the degree of statistical effort and data quantity you can throw at making the determination. For a quick and dirty assessment (which is also fairly common in real-world industry), I don't think Liz was too far off.
@babygurl6962Ай бұрын
@sj-el4lu yeah I found the change in more seasonal terms (like flannel and sherpa) not to be as stark when comparing around the same time of year.

Your know what’s been a trend this year? Appropriation of queer fashion, especially lesbian style. Like no! Stop. It’s a subculture and a community not fashion inspiration 😭 (You reminded me this when you mentioned a lot of influencers have been leaning more masculine or androgynous with their style and while that’s fine, there’s also been an appropriation of specific queer symbols and style signaling with a long history like carabiners, by both cishet women and men. Obvs this doesn’t apply to anyone within the community, n matter how queer or not they look.)
