He had a crisis just before writing the 5th symphony... he almost killed himself... in fact, this piece represents his triumph over death... by the time he wrote the 9th symphony he was completely deaf and by the time of its premiere he didnt hear a single note... quite depressing for a composer... theres a great documentary by the BBC about his life

The previous 3 movements are written in a very solemn c minor, and here you have a the fourth movement starting with a c major. It truly starts and ends with a bang, and is one of the most triumphant pieces out there. Also, for his time, this was a fairly modern sounding movement.

1st movement - Gigantic battle against fate. Very intense and ends with Beethoven losing. 2nd movement - Beethoven is living in his own dream world so he can collect all his energies to fight again. 3rd movement - Suddenly the fight continues, and we all know only one can stand by the end of this movement. 4th movement - VICTORY!!!!!!!

No other composer captures the essence of the human spirit more so than Beethoven. His musical legacy to the world touches the hearts and minds of all those who experience it. You cannot be anything other than be purely inspired by it's heroic nature, breadth of vision and an indominatable will to resist all the challenges that faces us all. To hear in the music the struggle and ultimate triumph no matter what the odds are, standing tall and saying confidently my spirit shall never broken.

This is true freedom of expression of a genius. Not a desire to conquer anything. He did not need to write this piece for money or love, he did not care for those things. Only his own freedom from classical simplicity and human shallowness. Some people may use it in wrong ways but is only Beethoven self on it like a GOD.

From about 2.00 to 3.30 is the most amazing passage of music I've yet heard. It is simply breathtaking, the sheer scale of it. This is very early Romantic music, yet it holds its own against anything else in that period, or any period. Just imagine the talent of someone who could write this whilst facing the prospect of deafness. By the way, this orchestra plays it superbly.

You couldn't be more wrong. I have been classically trained in classical piano for nearly thirteen years now. I've accompanied choirs and jazz bands. I've taken college courses on theory and music appreciation. I am very musically literate. I simply do not believe that the word song needs to exclusively apply to musical works that are sung, but has taken on a broader meaning.

Good God, this fourth movement is so egregiously overlooked -and I don't mean only by the general public. This is the most forceful and convincing expression of triumph in all of music.

+Covellechi Bach wasn't revolutionary. His contemporaries found him a bore because he was still refining elements from the Baroque era while most other popular composers were pursuing the new Classical style.

+James Clift i see your point. Haydn I would consider to be the composer who started the classical era. But Bach, being a composer at the end of the Baroque era, I think, was sort of giving a different sound to the time. When listening to works by Corelli, Buxtehude, Vivaldi, I notice differences when compared to Bach's work. I think Bach modernized music in a sense. He may have just been changing around the baroque elements a little, while others were progressing, but his approach is what I think revolutionized music. Just think: what would classical music have been like without Bach?

+James Clift JS Bach was ignored so much that some of those refined elements of the stile antique did not become known until 75 years after JS Bach's death.

It's funny how prevalent certain chords were. The opening of this movement has only got chords I, IV and V (like Gluck's Orfeo hundred years before him), and the first chord we hear that isn't one of them is almost 50 seconds in. Listen carefully. Simplicity at its triumphant best!
@peabrane8067

bolero by ravel stayed at tonic for the entirety of 15-or-so minutes (but i guess that's irrelevant to the topic cuz it's more like a test of composing techniques rather than a symphony of high artistic value) but many early sonatas by mozart also stayed within the I IV V paradigm, so it's not very uncommon to hear composers from the classical era to shift between only three chords for the entirety of a theme (or even an entire movement in certain exceptional cases)

but i get what you mean, you're trying to say that beethoven is a master at producing a grandiose sensation by using very little or no chord change (like the bridge to climax in the 6th symphony 1st movement), and i have to agree with you, it is simplicity that produces the ultimate effect of triumph (like the opening of 9th sym, 1st mov.)
