What a remarkable work that I never even knew existed! I have to say that at first it seems like a fairly generic piece written merely to fulfill a commission, but it then reveals itself as very much a work of this period in Beethoven's career: unpredictable, experimental, rather quietly radical. Some of the harmonic and rhythmic writing is absolutely bonkers, in the best sense (the modulations into and out of Variation III of the first Air!!!). Thank you very much for posting this.

Wondrous! When I think 'Beethoven' I think the Final Movement, First Piano Sonata. So....THIS is quite an Event....BRAVO!

@@soutteruk1 -- Oh no! I've been practicing Social Distancing for over 12 years. I do miss the beach down the road, but my landlord has let me use the pool in the expensive apartment. I'm still getting wine and beer from friendly grocers and there's no Covid-19 here. We may begin reöpening May 15. How are you? Where? Wishing you Health & Safety from San Agustinillo, Oaxaca, Mexico!

Schone Minka is ukrainian cossak song. The word russe here means descendents of the ancient Rus country. Ukrainians called themselves so in that time.

Van Beethoven was the early 19th century equivalent of Satie. He displayed the same urge to be eccentric/innovative. Luckily for himself Van Beethoven was a much better composer.

There's no comparison to be made there. Completely different eras and styles; it's apples and oranges. Seems to me like you just don't like Avant Garde work, though in this day and age Satie is hardly avant garde.

I don't think Beethoven can write bad music. It is impossible for him to do so!

Concur. If they'd had atriums and elevators . . . I found this because I wondered what came between op. 106 and 109. Of course, catalogues are unreliable for chronology.

Jack Domanski well, 107 does come after 106 so you are correct

Shame this along with op. 108 Scottish Songs interrupts op. 106-111 but so what it's just a catalogue.

It's very funny to think that Beethoven assigned an Opus number to these but considered the 32 Variations in C Minor unworthy of publication :D
@bartjebartmans4 жыл бұрын
These variations brought money in the bank. Beethoven was also a cunning businessman, but despite that these variations show the usual love of Beethoven for experimentation. What is baffling to me is the fact that the piano parts are at times very difficult, impossible to play by the average amateur.
