It takes years of exercise and devotion to play with such precision and elegance. Hats off to you sir. Edit: I'm paying respect to Mr. Barton for his dedication. It is common sense that the longer you play, the more nuances you notice and apply to your performance. It took you a month to learn this? Good. He solved very well a tecnichal problem of this Presto, the trinado at 2:32 and after at 5:10 with the right hand in octave. I have watched good pianists that dont get that very clean, because the hand in octave becomes difficult to do. Barton played both perfect.
@gigipizzuto40684 жыл бұрын
It is actually not an octave. It's the same value note so you actually let go of the octave before the trill. I used to go crazy because i have small hands and keeping the thumb down was close to impossible for me. Till a teacher told me that i didn't have to sustain the octave.

I’m Fooling myself into believing I am “learning” this at the moment. I started paino when I was 15 ish. I got fairly good in school when I was in music class a fair few hours a week. I was playing fur elise all the way through after only 2-3 months and then, moonlight sonata 1st movement, the pathetique sonata 2nd movement and some Chopin (waltz in a minor)... gradually moving on to harder pieces... but then I left school and never got any better. And I regrettably turned down lessons. But now, I’m up to the the first section where you hit the low octave 3 G#’s before the next run.. then I watch this and realise I’ll never be this good and it’s my own fault. Biggest mistake I ever made in my life was not taking proper piano lessons. If you’re young and reading this... get lessons if you’re not. I could have been great.
@eamonncseplo63824 жыл бұрын
There is absolutely no reason to believe you'll never play MSIII as good as Paul. If you put your mind to it and practice, you'll get to a point where you're satisfied. And when you're satisfied, that's when you work to get to a point where you're comfortable. The reason Paul sounds so amazing isn't just technique or pure speed or skill. It's the fact that he sounds so undeniably comfortable playing this piece. Your repertoire is already sounding great so far, and there is absolutely no reason to tell yourself you'll never play this piece well. Because as a pianist who can play this piece and many other pieces, I bet many other pianists will agree with me when I say, we ALL feel what you're feeling, and it's a destructive idea, because it does nothing but put you in a depression and make you want to give up. Never give up. Work your ass off. Do what you need to do. Sell your soul; fake it. But don't ever give up. There is no such thing as too old to learn something, and no such thing as "you learned when you were young, so I will never be as good as you." Not everyone had the privilege to learn so young. And some of those people are phenomenal piano players.

Yes, lots of practice and also he keeps his wrists loose. It helps, if when working technique, a student feels a sense of suspension starting from the shoulders and through the arm. With my beginner students I have them pretend like they are almost petting/scratching a cats back. That fluid motion of petting helps keep the fingers from tightening or becoming stiff. At first you have to always be aware of it but it becomes an automatic sensation after awhile. Valentina is a master at this. Her fingers just glide over the keys and it allows for her to play at incredible speeds. So, just maybe something to try! 🙂

So, just wanted to point out some details (for my own personal reference) of this performance that I find stellar: - The grace notes at 0:40 are beautifully executed: something about slowing down, taking the time to play it and be expressive is a really pretty detail, like a slight, dramatic, sorrowful moan. - The trills at 0:53 and (especially) 0:56 are notable technical difficulties, nonetheless are executed perfectly. I like how Barton uses fingers 5 and 4 to play the trill, taking advantage of the anatomy of the hand and the way the hand naturally fits on the keyboard. - The marked dynamic contrast between the 1:22 soft G#m phrase and the following thundering C#dim phrase gives a really expressive effect, as well as the slight rubato in the C#dim. Not maintaining a rigid tempo in this second theme is surprisingly adequate, given the monotonous rythmic structure of eighth notes. - Although the sections at 1:28 and 1:32 are virtually identical in execution, Barton gives a different coloring in the second section by accentuating the left hand as opposed to the melody. - Many commit the mistake of maintaining the chaotic and tempestuous tempo throughout the development section, specifically at 3:44. Barton doesn't, and, in fact, gives a little rubato in certain moments that fully extract the expressiveness of the beautiful melody. - The sweeps at 6:10 are thunderous, loud and dramatic. Despite the final run beforehand, tempestuous as it is, the sweeps still sound unexpectedly dramatic and the silences between them are haunting. - 7:19. The final run at the coda. Brilliant. Just brilliant.

Really helpful watching someone do the major 10th reaches. I struggle knowing where to position my hand at rest so I can extend without missing. I had been hovering over the thumb-2 rather than staying closer to the 2-5 span. Thanks!

I like how he nuanced his performance. The annunciation of the notes sounds different than other performances of this song.
