Beethoven “Moonlight Sonata” for Old Elephant

Mongkol is a 61-year-old former logging elephant. His captive-held life was spent hauling trees in the Thai forest. His body shape is deformed through hard labor, he lost his right eye and tusk in this brutal logging practice. Mongkol was rescued and brought to Elephants World to spend the rest of his days relaxing peacefully in freedom by the River Kwai. I discovered Mongkol is an extremely gentle, sensitive elephant who enjoys music, especially this slow movement by Beethoven which I play to him occasionally in the day and night.

Can you imagine Beethoven's reaction if he was brought back to life, realising that the song he wrote more than 200 years ago is now played by a dude with a piano to an old elephant in a forest in Thailand, and broadcasted all around the planet for 1.3 millions people to enjoy.

Those things will always be a part of human life, but we could probably reduce them all by a great deal if we stopped letting rich people use the economy as a casino. Since they own both parties and know that the government will bail them out when they crash the economy by abusing deregulation, they get carte blanche to screw us six ways from Sunday with near-impunity. Meanwhile, we could spend the rest of our lives in prison for stealing to meet our basic needs... being paid $0.27/day to work for the same assholes who were responsible for shipping all the manufacturing jobs to countries with fewer labor protections. The world is pretty messed up right now, and most problems can be traced back to what is euphemistically known as the Age of Exploration. Europe spent centuries robbing the countries we today call underdeveloped; funny how having resources stolen at gunpoint can make people poor. Scientists should study that. World War I was essentially European countries fighting over who got to rob Africa, and World War II was an attempted re-litigation of WWI. Europe spent all its time rebuilding after destroying itself over the course of two wars, so it fell on America to keep the poor countries in line. We bombed the shit out of Korea and Vietnam in an attempt to prevent their popular communist revolutions from succeeding, losing both times while managing the consolation prize of stealing part ot Korea then installing a fascist dictator. We have couped governments in the Middle East, Africa, South America... every continent except Antarctica. Americans need to get their shit together and stop our government from murdering poor people on behalf of Wall St.

Parrots are total music lovers. even budgies will bob their little heads up and down to the beat and mimic melodies. Big parrots will often straight up sing along. It's not just that they're repeating things, music is good for their mental well-being, and it's a recommended part of caring for a bird to play them music, sing to them etc. They're wonderful animals. There’s something almost ethereal to this. It has a dream like quality. The dark background, with the crickets underlaying the music, the soft and melodic music, the bright spotlight on the center and the harsh shadows on the ancient beast in the back, the gentle swaying of the elephant, the oddity of the piano in the jungle, and the complete normalcy of the piano player himself, it reminds me of an absurdist painting spiraling into a light and soothing dream.

Its so interesting because elephants tend to prefer sounds in a lower register, because it is easier for them to hear. Every time Mongkol turns to look at Paul it is when Paul is playing in a higher octave. As if he is confused, trying to understand where the sound went, what happened, or trying to tell Paul to play lower again. Then every time Paul plays lower notes, Mongkol turns away to sway, flap his ears, or raise his trunk in happiness. He enjoys the lower sounds more and is having a more personal engagement with lower notes. When it is higher, it is almost like a more communal experience, because he is obviously curious about what Paul is doing or how he is doing that. Such a beautiful, sensitive, and intelligent guy.

What really makes you wonder is whether it can feel those moments of tension then joyous release that music will create. I know the brain has to learn how to hear music and it's obvious that this elephant has listened to that piano more than once coz of the patience it has. If it has spent enough time listening and growing brain pathways, it may even be able to anticipate the hints at the direction that music will give you as it progresses along a piece... and that is where the music also begins to emotionally reward the listener as well. It does make you wonder if that elephant has developed that coz it sure seemed to appreciate it... :)

With the brutal kind of life he had, I think I may discern at the age of 61 Monkol is certainly enjoying the music.Just watching him, as the music is being played, his eyes...his ears, how they gently move back and forth. For those who don't know, Mongkol, is there at this setting because of the music. He is not tethered to anything .This is just beautiful!

beethoven famously hated elephants and frequently hired poachers to kill them for their ivory tusks, only to let the poachers keep the ivory for themselves, as a kind of poacher prank/cold blooded elephant assassination. this satisfied his need to be mysterious and the smartest person in the room, while also assuaging his lifelong phobia of elephants because of their inherent wisdom and memory. he had made many mistakes in his life, and the thought of a nearby elephant both wise enough to understand his mistake and eidetic enough to remember it kept him in a state of constant paranoia that elephants were spreading rumors about him. in a way this video is ultimately a complete spit in the face to beethoven, who was an elephant racist for really weird reasons. it also serves as elephant retribution, finally allowing an elephant ancestor to hear the music they were so deliberately deprived of so many years ago, by a proxy murderer and coward. you should learn more about beethoven before you say something so ironic and so uninformed.

@@tonoornottono Source?? Aside from whatever inane falsities you thought would be a good idea to make up, Beethoven - being German - actually loved elephants as they were powerful like the Prince Electors and always remembered slights against them (just as the German Protestants remembered the transgressions of the Pope). I think you might be projecting your own insecurities as Beethoven often *was* the smartest person in the room - people around you must have paid more mind to him while you desperately begged for attention. Wouldn't seem so farfetched as whatever drivel you bothered to write, completely unprovoked, bore barely any resemblance to reality and seemed more as a sad, broken person making a desperate last grasp to forget about how little people care about him. Look inward.

His body shape is deformed through hard labor, he lost his right eye and tusk in this brutal logging practice. Mongkol was rescued and brought to Elephants World to spend the rest of his days relaxing peacefully in freedom by the River Kwai. It seems music speaks to elephants in many ways, including wild elephants. Here in South Africa there used to be concerts of small orchestral groups, performing in the Kruger National Park. The audience took their chairs out beyond the fence of the campsites/lodge, and settle down in a clearing in the bush. It was well-known that after a short time the human audience would become aware of movements in the bushes, trees and grass around them. Wild elephants had heard the music and come to listen. They stood quietly and fairly close up, and calmly listened. As long as the human audience did not react suddenly, the elephants were quite content and calm, just listening. When the recital/concert ended, these gentle giants would turn and quietly walk back into the shrubs and disappear. Quite magical. And these were WILD elephants.

@maxwellgarrison2983
@maxwellgarrison2983 Жыл бұрын
@@mountainmgtow5421 I believe you are thinking of *dinosaurs* and other non-avian reptiles. The elephant brain is quite a bit larger than a human's, as are the brains of many intelligent mammals, including other species of human. Mammals in general have a very large brain-to-body ratio. Moreover, you have no evidence to say that they cannot comprehend music. In fact, elephants are extremely sensitive to sounds and communicate in many pseudo-melodic ways, not just with their trunks but radiating very low frequencies through the ground. The way elephants communicate is not unlike the way cetaceans like whales and dolphins do. They may not give each other names, but that does not mean that they do not themselves. If an elephant had such a small brain relative to its mass, we would not expect it to engage in mourning, exhibit very long term memory, or care for its young, like some very simple minded reptiles, or even lower forms of life like fish. We know now with modern paleontology that even dinosaurs with their relatively small brains (like their descendants the birds), had very complex lives and cared for their young, even capable of complex communicative noises.
