Since I started listening to Beethoven directed by Abbado, I cannot stand most of the other interpretations. He got something about how to produce unity among instruments and fluidity in the passages, while still keeping crisp and faithful music. Abbado has probably been the greatest director in the world.

Brendel never fails to please. His Schubert is iconic and the magisterial performance of the Beethoven 3 in collaboration with the superb - and much missed - Abbado, is terrific; Abbado could seemingly form a mystical musical link with almost any pianist - Gulda, Pollini or, as here, Brendel - and produce magic.

This wonderful video shows the advantages that can come from being able to see as well to listen to music . Two things stand out for me . First , and as ever , there is the sight of Claudio Abbado ‘ s genius as a conductor in bringing out the best in this most talented orchestra and drawing out the subtleties of this lovely piece . Then we can see the members of the orchestra themselves mesmerised and delighted by Alfred Brendel’s brilliance and sheer vitality in this memorable and utterly delightful recording .

In my opinion Beethoven's most creative and sparkling piano concerto. The rondo in particular never ceases to amaze me -- one moment demonic, the next, flirtatious. And technically very, very demanding. To be able to see this performed by two musical titans -- Abbado and Brendel -- is simply miraculous. Thank you for the really superb upload.

This is now a valuable historical document as alas, Maestro Abbado is n longer with us and Alfred Brendel is unable any longer to play because of deafness. How ironic and sad that his hearing should fail (2008) when he was arguably capable of even more great performances such as this - large-scale chamber music with both musicians obviously enjoying themselves and taking the orchestra along for the ride! The passage-work is crystalline and the dynamics and pacing magical. Bravo!

The piano performance by Brendel is so marvelous that I'm not able to criticize at all. So, I became to prefer this No.3 piano concerto to No.5 "Emperor" If you went into the forest of Beethoven's excellent works, You'll notice how this Beethoven's No.3 piano concerto is marvelous. And I do declare that Alfred Brendel is one of the supreme pianists in this present world. From Tokyo
@jvdesuit17 жыл бұрын
I completely agree with you with the n°4 those are the richest one as far as emotion, finesse are concerned and for that reason perhaps the most difficult to perform, you can't show off, you can't hide behind virtuosity for the sake of it. Brendel doesn't has no mannerism like so many pianists especially young ones while playing and is in complete fusion with Abbado and the orchestra which obviously takes an immense pleasure which can be observed by the smiles of some of the instrumentalists.
@user-oe1vr9ti6r7 жыл бұрын
Thank you for your thoughtful comment. I think that Brendel is a little bit different from the pianist like Horowitz. I can say he's a pianist of thought or intelligence. Especially,I love his Beethoven, Mozart and Schubert.
@jvdesuit17 жыл бұрын
He was considered as the specialist of Beethoven and Schubert ; he has recorded practically the complete piano works of Beethoven and nearly all Schubert sonatas. I have some of the LPs of those recordings which are amazing. There is another great pianist for Beethoven whose career was unfortunately short: If you wish to hear a fantastic performance of Beethoven's concerti try to find the cds of Solomon Curtner mostly known to the audience as Solomon (1902-1988). He gave for the BBC the full performance of Beethoven's sonata and was recording them in 1956 when a devastating stroke paralyzed his right arm putting an end to his career . With Arthur Schnabel at that time he was considered as the best Beethoven interpreter. A complete recording of the concertos was published by EMI in Germany under the reference CDF 300. 004 2 in three cds with a bonus of his interpretation Beethoven Sonata n°8 Pathétique. the concertos are performed with the Philharmonia orchestra of London either conducted by Herbert Menges or André Cluytens. The recordings were made in the early and mid 50s. Some in stereo. His performance of the n°4 is a must hear. You can find a full article on Solomon here :en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Solomon_(pianist)

"I'm not able to criticize at all." Classical music was never written for critique, but solely written for listening.
@jvdesuit17 жыл бұрын
The question is not to criticize music, it's the performance which may be so. You can immediately make the difference between fantastic interpretation and one which is let's say in the average. If the interpretation is exceptional you'll get in a sort of trance and forget everything which around you in the auditorium. If it is not anything that may happen will distract you. Brendel as well as Solomon were among those few pianist which made you forget that there was an instrument. It is pure magic. They don't need to make faces and gestures like for instance Lang Lang.
