So glad I came across this performance. Brautigam makes the most of the fortepiano sound and its distinctive personality and delivers a wildly passionate performance.giving due justice to the title Appassionata. Based on this performance I will be buying his complete set of the sonatas.

turandot4100 Great call there. For some of the sonatas I may prefer readings by other fortepianists on older fortepianos (he uses replica of a Conrad Graf, who built fortepianos described by Robert Levin as approaching the dynamic range of a modern piano, built by Paul McNulty for Sonatas Opp. 53--111), but his musicianship and technical command are consistently higher for this repertoire than the usual lot playing on modern piano.

+turandot4100 Go you!!! Once one hears these played on fortepiano the modern piano sounds flat.

+CaradhrasAiguo49 If an antique fortepiano is in good condition they do have that edge. It must be the wood seasoned or something like that! Check out Paul Badura Skoda on YT- he plays ones that are 200 years old!

This is Allegro assai, and this is "Appassionata". Finally. Beethoven's tempi should never be "comfortable". Comfortable is not the point. You have to take enormous risks. (My own note to self).

Don't forget it's played on a very light mechanic , so it's not so hard to reach such tempo.

Mr.Bräutigam looks like a Little Bit Beethoven 😅 for me is this a reincarnation of Beethoven..

A little bit slower and more evil. But that's perfect. Brautigam is real genius.

Fantastic performance and sound on my Bluetooth speakers....I came here after listening to BBC Radio 3 recommendation (Building a Library 11/2/23). This is one of the best fortepiano Beethoven recordings ever.
