What a shame Richter didn't make more studio recordings so we would get his playing in high sound quality. This is wonderful.

Wow, in this sonate I prefer him, even over Gilels. So many details, so great structure. Perfect composition, thanks Beethoven and Richter.

Richter sometimes went to excessively slow or fast tempi. "Nicht zu geschwind" means not too swift (fast).

Second mouvement trop rapide.

Looking for an op.90 that I love throughout. Great first movement but the finale is not contemplative enough here.

Von Bülow labeled the two movements speech then song. Beethoven asks for “liveliness” at the start, and yet Tovey called the first movement lonely. Schubert was 17 when Opus 90 appeared and he surely absorbed it. Altogether the piece “cost Beethoven much trouble. The coda is magical and full of mystery.” (MSteinberg)

he sure is in a hurry in the second movement, and rushes as well a little bit, weird

And yet he manages to make it work. At the times the faster tempo would destroy the movement, he lets up and it survives. It's difficult to keep this movement from becoming pedestrian, and maybe that's his solution to it. It's Richter, so I bow to his judgment.
