Schumann said that Op. 131 and Op. 127 had a "grandeur ... which no words can express. They seem to me to stand ... on the extreme boundary of all that has hitherto been attained by human art and imagination."

I'd say the Alban Berg Quartett was the finest chamber ensemble of the 20th century. The chemistry, ellegance and balance in their playing is unmatched. Whether it's Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Mozart... they knew it all. May maestro Kakuska rest in piece, he gave us the most magical performances of these wonderful pieces.

Well, the Bartok String Quartet were amazing, or the Tokyo String Quartet.....I find this quartet takes too long between movements.

The grandeur of those opening chords is fantastic. They reinforce Beethoven's reputation as being the arch dramatist of music. E flat major is often preferred by the master for heroic utterances, as in the Third Symphony.

Thank you for uploading this performance. It is well worth listening to and a joy. I am most fortunate to have attended some of their concerts. Quibbles about intonation are entirely beside the point and fatuous. It's live music making, and a grand interpretation. Again, thank you for sharing.

What a change from his first written maybe 24 or 25 years earlier, yet still his genius comes forth as does the great musicianship of the Alban Berg Quartet.

Getting back to supposed problems of intonation, the slow movement especially is full of remote modulations. If you can read music, try listening to a version that has the score to follow. You'll see what I mean.

Now I see where Mahler got the idea for some of his slow movements.

I've always liked the slow movement, but wonder how Beethoven came up with the idea of the German march. What does it mean in the context of the rest of the movement?

The most consistent, virtuosic, fine-toned, mellow and recommendable quartet of all time? Possibly. Beethoven's late music is the equivalent. kzbin.info/aero/PLD8EqKTPZanwVcs6j0HD1G-nsBOozN4ao

Does he use that opening somewhere else? My mind automatically expects another phrase which never arrives.

some are praising this to the hilt - I can't agree. I thought it was at times shapeless with some questionable intonation, phrasing and entrances. But opinions can vary so widely when it comes to artistic performance. So I'm glad some liked it a lot.
@ultimateconstructionКүн бұрын
Opinions can vary, but there's only one truth. This Quartet, along with 15 others, is way more cleverly and intellectually composed than anything chopin ever wrote.
