Very interesting. To me the more convincing movement for a string orchestra result to be the second. The articulation of the parts is very clear. Clearly as a quartet is stronger and powerful. Anyway one of Beethoven greatest quartets.

Sounds strange indeed if you know the quartet well. But I find it interesting to see how it works differently. Some passages take the more voluminous sound well, others are not convincing. This is an experiment that will surely not take over. Nobody is going to take the quartet from you. Compare also Bernstein's op 131 for chamber orchestra. Actually, what about the inverse, like Tchaikovsky's Serenade for quartet?
