Imagine a blind person painting the Mona Lisa? That's the equivalent of what this man did here. It's one of the most extraordinary events in the history of the creative arts.

i cry every time I hear this, out of pure joy and it probably has something to do with what you said. It's the sound of humanity shedding its shackles and chains. The sound of our species rising. I'm crying as I type this, but smiling ear to ear. It gives me great hope for our species.

Not really
@franciscoacorda11603 жыл бұрын
I do not think they are analogous. The 9th is towering piece of human achievement and it does speak about Beethoven's extraordinary talent. But music can exist in the mind, and more so for musical geniuses like Beethoven. A blind Da Vinci would have a much harder time putting paint on canvas no matter how clear his mental image is, than a deaf Beethoven transcribing music that he already hears in his mind.
@Numberonesorabjifan3 жыл бұрын
Not really that comparable. Composing music isn't a very physical thing. You do it in the mind. For painting you use the physical space on your canvas. So composing while being deaf is much easier than painting while being blind.

It's not until you actually study music theory that you recognize the true genius of this movement!! While in Ternary form the A section is in complete Sonata form, with the opening theme being a fugue! Also, the second theme of the exposition is not in the typical relative major, or dominant, it's in C Major (the dominant of the relative major). Not to mention how the first beat every 3 measures is accented in a way to somewhat sound like it is in common time time, but the timpani solo and following measure is kind of like Beethoven laughing at those wanting to try and make that claim. Then there's that BEAUTIFUL Trio which actually does switch to common time, but does so seamlessly!! And the way Beethoven orchestrates this pieces is brilliant!! I particularly love the Bassoon and Horn parts, and he incorporates the Trombones in the trio so... Gorgeously!!! In my opinion this is the most brilliant piece of music ever written!!

Don't know what country you are from or age but the USA's NBC nightly news played this as their intro to the show, and as exit music. That was when they had class. This would have been in the 60s. @@trevorcollins25 :) it's the sort of thing I thought a younger person might like to know, in case you were young yourself. Plus I thought you might be from the UK - because people named "Trevor" in the US are fairly rare. But that opener WAS iconic. I took piano, from age 8-12 (I good enough to play musical theatre classics, some classical music, and the easier parts of Rhapsody in blue, but one of my teachers tried to do a little music theory with me about age 11-12, was too young to get a lot beyond the basics. I'd have appreciated it more about age 15 or so. So I thought what you had to say was really interesting. Especially about the time signature shifts, and the really nice work with the ones, bassoons and timpani. They seldom get the spotlight. Did take "history of western music" core class when I was a freshman at UCSD. Had a blast with it, because we started with western chant, on up to modern music. A year long class. Easy A for me for the 3 academic quarters. :). Are you currently a musician? Sounds like you might be.

Easily my favorite classical pieces. It really highlights the underdogs of the orchestra; bassoon, oboe, french horn, and timpani. I'm a percussionist so I love the timpani solos, but I love how the other instruments that people don't really think about play such a vital role in one hell of an amazing piece. Musical Genius.

Bassoon and oboe are understandable but who says French horns and timpani are underdogs? French horns make the piece epic and memorable while timpani are the heartbeat of the orchestra

This whole symphony is enough to bring me into absolute awe; its remarkable how in the last movement, the chorale was not originally planned, nor how, in fact, what was intended to be the final movement beyond the Ode to Joy, was instead cut from the script and reserved for the final movement of his Hymn of Thanks string ensemble. I wonder how it would have been taken should the original plans had gone through.

I watched it so many times as a child and this movement brings back so many memories of that that I can almost see it in my head at some points. If memory serves me I think they actually used themes from this movement more than the main "Ode to Joy" theme. Side note if you've every listened to the Trans-Siberian Orchestra production, "Beethoven's Last Night," they use one of the themes from this movement quite extensively in the track titled "Beethoven." I know not every one likes that kind of thing but my grandad did so I think that says a lot.
