I really wish every video I made showed a happy, healthy, and thriving bee colony, but in reality, that's not how it is. Sometimes, and thankfully not often, when I show up, the hive is on the verge of collapse., and as sad as that is, our video this week depicts such an event.
By the time I received the call concerning this hive, it had been exposed to the elements for at least 10 days. Now, we are talking about a Louisiana summer where daytime temps can reach the upper 90's by 10 in the morning, and if you are lucky, by 12 that night, the temps may have dropped to the upper 70's to cool things down.....and don't forget that 100% humidity to really make things sticky.
So, as you can well imagine, this colonies future was greatly diminished. Still, I am always hopeful about rescuing a hive and it beating the odds, so I gave it a go. As soon as I got up into the tree, I smelled fermenting honey along with a rotten smell, I knew it was not good sign. Then, almost as soon as I started vacuuming bees and exposing the comb, robber bees started showing up, this removal was going downhill at record speed.
I managed to vacuum a bunch of bees before the robber bees became to numerous, but then the real disaster was exposed, the comb was full of beetle maggots. Still, I was not overly concerned as I had 5 frames of drawn out comb with lots of honey in it for them as they would not be getting any of their own comb due to the beetle larva.
And now, the rest of the story. After an unsuccessful queen capture, I took the vacuumed bees and brought them to our St. Jude Yard and released them onto the new comb, there were a few thousand of them. The following day, I returned to the tree, found and captured the queen, if you watch the post video you will see that adventure, and went to reunite her with her bees on the fresh comb. When I got to the yard and opened the box, all the bees had absconded. Now I was left with a queen and no bees. I posted on our bee club platform the availability of a queen, and within 5 minutes, I had 3 takers. The next morning she was picked up and went to a hive that had been queenless for almost a week. The bees immediately accepted her, and the hive is doing well as of this posting. I am still scratching my head as to why the bees absconded, but I am leaning to the theory that the stress of whole ordeal made these bees act in an unusual manner.
I apologies for posting a not so happy ending video, but it's all part of keeping bees, and even that side needs to be shown to give a full picture of the reality of the hobby we love so much. God's peace to all. Mr. Ed

Hive beetles are just so nasty.....especially when the larva hatch out. They can take a hive full of comb, and transform it into a slimy, gross, lump of wet. Thanks for watching. God's peace Heather. Mr. Ed

That looks like a new queen. I'd guess that when the tree snapped the hive lost its queen, but they managed to make a new one from the young brood they still had. Sorry to hear you lost the colony. Alas, we have to take the sweet with the bitter. Thanks for another sad but great video.

Come to think of it, you would have to give them a frame or two of brood no matter what - unless you merged them in another hive. I hope they made it. A followup would be appreciated. There were no saved bees from this one other than the queen. Dammit Boy I’ve been having breathing problems, and breathlessness at night...I don’t know if I can ever sleep laying flat again...enough about me. I do keep Sharon and you in my prayers, and apologize for not communicating more often. I’m so glad that you enjoy Mr. Ed. If I may, I’d like to recommend the channel “megabattie,” to you. It’s mainly about bats getting rescued in Australia. As you know, I’m over 60, and there’s still things to learn about, and I have a new love in my life: flying-foxes. I knew next to nothing about bats, and have seen and learned so much! I’m confident that you’ll experience the “love at first sight” that I did. The milk coma after being fed is so heartwarming! The trilling noise they make is nice, but the indignities they go through in being rescued can get them to screeching! So, I close this in Jesus’ name, and do look forward to hearing from you soon, dearly beloved brother!

Hi Gine, I've done it over and over (I don't have good eyes, I'm very jealous of Jeff's excellent vision and discernment!). She goes right into the vacuum, no problem. Why did the bees abscond ? Here is my hunch....... After the bees had to deal with all that stress and being moved without the queen, they only had 5 frames of honey. Not a big deal for bees since they can collect more syrup/honey and bees can handle stress to an extend. If you would had given them a frame with brood with some pollen, they would had stayed to take care of them. The frame of brood with pollen is almost like a insurance policy to make stressed bees to stay. You can not expect bees to make and raise brood with honey alone . It will fail. There are 2 possibilities I can think of where the bees are. 1, they where trying to go back to the tree where you got them from if it is no more than 5 miles away. 2, they went into one of your hives and combined with the existing bees of that hive at the bee yard.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 5 жыл бұрын
There are many reasons bees abscond, but I agree with you, by placing a frame of brood in the new box greatly reduces the chance of the bees absconding, but it is not a guarantee. I have had on more than one occasion bees abscond even though a frame of brood was given them. Thanks for watching. God's peace. Mr. Ed

@@JeffHorchoff I feel for you because of the time and care you take to ensure that what you provide to the Bee's is security and health from all these nasty bugs and so forth. Keep praising Jesus Mr Ed, it's the best insurance in Gods Realm in Nature, there is nothing fair in their world?
