That’s quite the equipment setup! Here’s another bee tidbit: Have you ever noticed bees at work? The buzzing hive, bees zipping around like they’ve got places to be and honey to make. That is exactly what it means to be "busy as a bee." These little guys are the ultimate multitaskers, flitting from flower to flower, collecting nectar, and building honeycombs like experts. Being "busy as a bee" means you are hustling, juggling a bunch of tasks like a pro.

If you drive up closer to the hives you can use the trailer boom to pick the boxes and for go using the hive lifter and having to push it through the tall grass.

Also I'm a big fan of the hives being placed on a concrete pad so they don't have all that grass around them, and don't have soft dirt under them for pests to hide in. Then you can put a fence around the edge of the concrete and have livestock grazing the grass. My cattle have learned to stay away from the hives when the bees are busy, but they get plenty of time overnight and in rainy weather to graze that particular part of the paddock - and because the fence is at the edge of the concrete, they can go quite close to the hives and I know they're not going to cause any damage to the bees.

You's should add a little outstop with concrete so you're not having to navigate those posts and roof for loading. Loving watching all your stuff, I'm a new mead maker finding it really interesting where the honey for my brews comes from.

I'd be taking the honey supers off before putting the fume boards on them so that at least you're not putting a nasty stink into the brood nests. Maybe simply put the honey supers on top of the fume boards and let the bees leave out the top of the boxes and go home. But also, I'd want to compare this to the process with a horizontal hive.
@JeffHorchoff
@JeffHorchoff 3 ай бұрын
The idea of fume board is to push bees from the top of the hive, the honey super, towards the bottom boxes, the brood boxes. It is not necessary to move boxes off the hive or rotate them and then place the fume board on. I have been using fume boards like this for over 30 years and it has served my needs each year. God's peace brother. Mr. Ed

Once you get used to the trailer lift - park it closer to the hives. If there is room, you can even park it behind them. You will then be able to do all the super handling with it and not need the cart - which is problematic on really rough ground. With your current trailer configuration, you can use the front and back notches for lifting - meaning you can place them on the trailer without any manhandling. You could also reconfigure the trailer so there isn't any space between the supers - which might allow one more row. Of course, the current configuration may be sufficient for even your largest yard.

There is for sure a learning curve to use the lift, but by the time we had finished getting our honey supers, we had it figured out and it was working like a charm. Having enough space for machinery access behind the hives saves on stings! But you still need the hives sheltered by their trees, so it takes some fine tuning to get that part worked out.

I was thinking of building like a loading bay to site my hives so I could back my vehicle up to the loading bay, or building risers for the boxes to sit on, this would be cheaper than a lift and make it much easier to load supers. I noticed when the fume boards were spayed that some of them hardly got any of the honey bandit and some of the supers were still full of bees as a result, I saw one super whos bottom was festooned with bees.

Aye. My favourite layout is a concrete pad under the hives so there's no grass at the front door and no soft ground underneath for vermin to burrow in. Then a fence at the edge of the concrete, and you can have livestock grazing right to the edge of the concrete without worrying about them bothering the bees. My cows have learned to stay away from the hives when they're busy, and graze the grass close to the bees when the bees aren't active. With a trailer mount lift like this, you'd lift your supers off the hives and straight over the fence - the gate is just for people to walk through. Around here long grass is more of a concern for snakes than ticks, but you don't want them biting you either.

Hello again my friend. Thanks for the informative content. I'm surprised you don't use 9 frames in your supers? Also, in regards to your fume board spray, I've used one product that smells like almonds and another that smells like vomit. I've had better results with the later (Bee Go). I have never used Honey Bandit, can you describe the smell by chance? Also, with my fume boards, I notice that I have some bees head up and gather under the fume board. Someone recommended off setting the FB to allow top escape as well as downward movement of the bees. I also need to use my blower to clear the supers completely, partly because I haul them in my station wagon.

The smell of the Honey Bandit is as Charlie says, "smells just like wedding cake," and that's because it has almond extract as one of the main ingredients. After we move the super we do blow them with a leaf blower, but there are so few in there it takes just a few bursts. Thanks for watching. God's peace Dan. Mr. Ed
