So fun fact- Alex Brightman actually has a rare mutation where he can squeeze together these extra flaps in his throat and make that gruff sound without hurting his vocal chords. He's talked about it in interviews and how it's actually harder on his voice to sing normally. The understudies can't do it, so it's easy to tell the difference.
