For those curious about where I found the D.C. audio, it was given to me by a kind individual on Instagram. The drive, though, does not belong to me. I always compared it this way.. The dc version is a full on R rated version of the film, nasty, sexual, more pervy but also with some interesting moments and a bit deep (i do miss for example the miscarriage plot point) While the broadwat version is a pg13 version of the beetlejuice cartoon

In the original script of the movie version Barbara had a miscarriage but that was removed for a similar reason

1:35, the reason why Beetlejuice’s suicide is so accepted is because it’s canon to the movie (and possibly the animated series) since in earlier concepts for the movie he’d hung himself, hence the iconic scratchy-af voice and possibly his cartoons counterparts red fingertips. However, with Musical! Beetlejuice’s whole ‘being a demon’ thing, the born dead thing makes a lot more sense, y’know? (Also, for the next parts, you should DEFINITELY include Beetlejuice and Lydia’s epic duet and the end of Say My Name, the cut lyrics from No Reason, Mama Would, and it’s reprise, Emily Would(which I personally feel they should’ve found some way to keep in the show)

You’re absolutely right! Although I didn’t know that it’s _canon_ that movie!Beetlejuice hung himself, it is widely believed and I’m also someone who buys it. However, in the animated series, it’s canon that he was born dead, and that may be where, in that aspect, the musical drew its inspiration from. It just bothers me sometimes when I see theories about Beetlejuice stopping Lydia’s suicide because he, himself, committed suicide- just because,, noo. Alex Brightman confirmed otherwise in a Playbill interview. I felt the need to leave that note in the video because it seems that few people know that Musical!BJ was born dead. Also, thank you for your suggestions!! I totally agree about keeping Mama Would and Emily Would in the show 🥺 They’re amazing.

the miscarriage is heavily implied in the film. before the Maitlands die their neighbor/community leader come over and there is a line about the house being too big for a couple with no family which leads to an awkward and somber moment between her and Barbara

I’m pretty sure that’s what happened in the movie. They were trying to have a baby but probably miscarried. When Jane comes trying to convince them to sell the house she goes “this house should really be used by a family.” And then Barbara gets a sad look on her face and Jane says “ohh pumpkin I didn’t mean anything by it.”

Marganna Goad Yeah, I miss it!! The thing is, they needed to cut lots of things for time’s sake. Also, in the Broadway run, Charles and Lydia don’t hate each other as much, so it was a little bit aggressive for Lydia to wish death upon her father by saying, “I wish his perfect picket fences would impale him through the heart.” However, I love the analogy of her life being a carousel filled with phonies, so I definitely do miss that verse.

I think it was too high for Sophia to do every night bc that verse modulated the key up by one step so the chorus (“daddy doesn’t wanna feel”) would be up on a D5! That’s pretty high to do every night.

@Freelance Bioexorcist Super late, but I'm pretty sure the Carousel line is a reference to the book "Catcher in the Rye". The main character of the book is dealing with depression and grief, also he constantly complains about the "phonies" of the world. Towards the end of the book there's a Carousel that I think is supposed to be a metaphor for life.

I don’t know how the fandom sees it but the suicide is movie only and it’s made clear in the musical he’s never been alive and is hell native. Edit: It was cut from the movie but basically being a netherworld civil servant is the punishment for suicide. He hung himself but suffocated in failing to beak his neck which is a significantly worse way to go which explains the cocked voice, rotting and insects as your spirit seems to remain as you where at the moment of death and he had been dying a lot longer than most. Making demons separate from ghosts works as it gives a reason he is significantly more powerful since in the movie other ghosts abilities are only shown to be tame and also means they don’t have to spend a lot of money and effort on things like Barbara and Adam face warping.

Exactly. The fandom tends to think that he committed suicide, despite the lack of evidence for that claim and the overwhelming evidence that he was born dead -- especially as it was confirmed by Alex Brightman himself that he was Netherworld native. The musical is very different from the movie, drawing inspiration from both the cartoon _and_ the movie. In the cartoon, he was born dead, which is likely where they got it from. Yet, somehow, it's a huge misconception in the fandom. You articulated it perfectly.

I only just found out about Beetlejuice and I've been obsessed with the soundtrack ever since!!! It sucks I can't actually watch it bc I I'm not American but holy moly, it's so good! The miscarriage plot was unexpected... So in the Washington version, the Maitlands weren't just scared of being responsible for a baby but they LOST a child already?? Oh my god, that's so sad. Can you share some more info/clips about that? ...wait, Betelgeuse said he was born dead and he's a demon... This one's very subtle but they changed the way the house was revealed. In the DC version lightning is striking while Beetlejuice is talking about himself (interrupting him too) before one final strike reveals the home. In the Broadway run Beetlejuice points out the house before telling the audience that 'its a lot bigger on the inside!' and he reveals it himself. Subtle but neat. There's also the "Living in a box" song that Otho and his followers sing that got cut that I wish was still in but time is a demanding mistress.

Watching this two days after seeing the musical REALLY makes me wish they kept the miscarriage arc. It would’ve had me in tears. There’s so many things in this video and the other one that I wish they kept in the musical now. The reason why they cut these was most likely cuz they wanted to make the musical aimed towards teens more than adults probably. Making things less adult and edgy. But I can confirm that Alex still sneaks some 18+ lines in the show cuz it’s such an Alex thing to do and I love him for it. Literally made me laugh so hard especially when he mentioned Orgies 😂

I was talking to someone on Instagram a few days ago who was able to see the DC version and they were telling me how DC Lydia was much more intense, though they didn’t really give many specifics. So I suppose my request for future parts is intense Lydia moments (including I think invisible had different lyrics?) Thank you for sharing these!

I can confirm that Lydia was much more intense! For the most part, that’s because there was much more tension between Charles and she. I’ll try to include more intense Lydia moments! Invisible (Prologue) actually had the same lyrics, but it was sung on a slightly lower key, and interestingly, it was in the middle of The Whole “Being Dead” Thing. Regardless, she was more intense, so I’ll try to find some moments of that. Thanks for your input!

The reason why people are saying he killed himself is because in the original film his death cause was going to be he hung himself. But they decided not to include it in the movie because they wanted to keep it lighthearted.

Yup! There are various theories about how movie Beetlejuice died, and the most plausible theories are suicide via hanging or drowning. However, the musical, as confirmed by Alex Brightman in a Playbill interview, is different. He was born dead, similarly to the cartoon.
