I saw Fishbone live in Boston and NYC in the late 90s/early 2000s. In Boston, I must have been one of a few black people and maybe the only black woman in the club. I was pressed against the center stage in the tiny venue and Angelo Moore sweat into my eye. In NYC, the band was just hanging around in the venue with the rest of us before they went on stage, from what I remember. I loved all of it.

I had never even heard of Fishbone until I saw them ROCK THE PLACE DOWN on SNL in 1991. I then made a friend who had their then new album _The Reality Of My Surroundings_ and played it for me. I couldn't get into most of the album, except for "Fight The Youth," "Everyday Sunshine" and "Sunless Saturday" which is still one of my top 50 favorite songs of all-time. (I also found the "If I Were...I'd..." series quite humorous. 😄) I still can't get into most of their extremely weird eclectic stuff, HOWEVER the stuff I can get into I fucking love. And I love Fishbone. I love everything they represent and they represent so well. I was born in 1967 and grew-up in the 70s and 80s, and I remember when music started becoming segregated beginning in the 80s, reaching full segregation by the end of that decade. Record companies and media conglomerates did this on purpose. Rap was pushed to Black people and Heavy Metal was pushed to Whites. Now, while the latter strategy may have worked on me 100% - and I am a proud Metalhead to this day at age 56 - I always lamented music segregation. Music is for everyone to enjoy, not certain types of music for certain types of people which is bullshit. I was raised in the early-to-mid-70s with MoTown as well as Top 40 AM Pop, The Jackson 5 as well as The Osmonds, and guess which I preferred? The Supremes, The Temptations, The Four Tops, The Miracles, The Spinners, The O'Jays, The Stylistics and The Jackson 5. I was raised to love Black Soul and R&B, I loved it all and I STILL love it to this day. Music knows no artificial, man-made boundaries. Music is love and fun and NEEDS to be shared BY ALL. Much love to ALL bands who make music for EVERYONE. #OneLove 🤎🖤🤍❤️🎵🎶

The point is not that blacks have the right to rock or not - the point is that skin color doesn't determine what kind of music you like. We're supposed to escape stereotypes not reinforce them on both sides. Skin color is insignificant to life.

THE BOTTOM LINE IS "ROCK N ROLL "is Fishbone's birthright BLACK'S created ROCK N ROLL no if ,and's,or but's the Black's who didn't know or acknowledge this were just plain ignorant and had no knowledge of BLACK MUSIC HISTORY...prove me wrong ...
@ng16047 жыл бұрын
Black music history is part of music history as Black American culture is part of American culture. Rock'n'Roll belongs to everyone and anyone, there is no birthright attached to it. Even it's origins come from a mixture of both White and Black musicians, Chuck Berry's Maybellene-one of the very first tracks considered rock'n'roll is an adaption of a country song called Ida Red. Fats Domino did many an adaption of earlier "white" music simply by giving it a swing, "my blue heaven" by Gene Austin comes to mind -an appropriation of itself "black" folk music, which is arguably a mixture of native american, African and European folk music. source: testimony from a number of rock'n'roll legends and the billions of documentaries of rock'n'roll music by music historians. I think you missed the point of the video that music can transcend "race" which is a man-made abstract construction that needs to die a quick death. Maya Anjelou, Martin Luther King, even Malcom X in his later years on a wider aspect understood it best. That the way forward is to acknowledge but not to entrench one's self in their identity. Modern Identity politics relies on pushing forth old wounds, not mending them. You have must have seen or read the transcript of King's legendary speech "I have a Dream"-live it. Done.

Its not even about rock and roll being their birthright. Rock and roll knows no boundaries. Fishbone was one of those bands (another is Faith No More and Infectious Grooves) who blended genres really well. They could be metal in one song, ska in another and funk. The lyrics to Servitude still resonates 20 plus years after.

@granolabombz75605 жыл бұрын
I have been an avid listener of Fishbone since their first EP in 85 One thing that struck me seeing them almost a dozen times back in the 80s/90s is how few black people were at the shows. And musically, Fishbone is all over the map. Their music has elements of funk, punk, heavy metal, progressive rock (they have cited the prog band "Yes" as an influence), soul, dub/reggae as well as many eras of jazz. And of course, they had songs that defied any genre classification.
