The Tundra shares some front suspension geometry, and in the USA and UAE, the 5.7ltr Gas V8, and the gearbox. transfer case,front hubs, front axles, rear suspension (complete), frame, interior etc etc contain no shared parts. Toyota has been evolving the LandCruiser since the 1950s. It was not “ based” on a pickup.

John Bradley This is not true. The tundra and sequoia, well similar are pretty different underneath. look at the rear suspension design for reference. LC and tundra do actually share a lot. Engine and trans to start, and much of the undercarriage is pretty similar.

You don't know what a chassis is do you? Vehicles are built on a chassis and the Tundra and LC200 for this gen shared the same chassis.. I remember having to ask the differences when buying an LC.. Tundra used coilovers and LC used leef etc etc.. Every major company will share a chassis across their truck and SUV platforms and only spend R&D money to develop a new chassis if absolutely needed.. It saves money.. My father was Exec VP for Mitsubishi Motors Corp Japan, so I learned a lot about thus stuff in my youth

Lunamaria I believe you think you know more than you actually know. First off, suspension is not chassis. Second, the Tundra and the Land Cruiser are indeed on completely different chassis. The Tundra was designed in California, much later than the LC was designed in Japan and while they do both have leaf springs in the rear, they are not at all the same leaf springs. However, the Tundra, even though it used coil springs, is on the same chassis as the Tundra and it was derived from it.

The LC uses the same engine as the Tundra, but I believe the LC now has an 8 speed automatic transmission while the Tundra still uses the 6 speed. The frame and everything else between the LC and Tundra are different, and yes you are correct the Sequoia is the SUV version of the Tundra, they share the same traits.

@@wildbill23c incorrect. The LC uses forged internals throughout the 5.7. The Tundra/Sequoia get cast internals. The LC engine is much stronger. They did the same thing in the 100 Series where you could bolt a TRD supercharger on with zero issue. But, on the Tundras that used the cast internals on the 2UZ-FE, they became notorious for grenading when running the same supercharger. Again, the engines are similar, but the LC is engineered and built much stronger.

I've heard of several Tundra 5.7L failures not supercharged so I could only imagine the failures with the supercharger maybe that's why Toyota discontinued the supercharger LOL. They're kinda close. Share all the drive train other than rear axle. Front tundra suspension is bolt on long travel. The LC has much better skid plates and such. But they're at least close cousins. Next gen will share a complete platform.

Notice the parts are built exactly the same just a lil bigger on the tundra so it could be a srw land maxer in the us (79.9in wide) where the cruiser cant because it has to be more narrrow. You forgot to mention a very important off-road feature that all Land Cruisers come with, KDSS (kinetic dynamic suspension system) It optimally adjusts front and rear stabilizers based on a set of interconnected hydraulic cylinders. The interconnection is made up of hydraulic piping and a control cylinder which is located at the frame rail. KDSS, which is fully mechanical, can disengage the stabilizer bars. This system will not engage during normal driving conditions, when hydraulic pressure is equal. In off-road conditions, KDSS activates when it senses that a wheel has dropped. Some 4Runners also have it, mine does. Improves both off-road and on-road handling by loosening stabilizers when articulation is needed and stiffening them progressively firmer at speed for road use

That used to be true. The Land Cruiser used to be the best off road Toyota available. Now, although it is somewhat different, it really is a rebadged Sequoia. The suspension etc is basically Sequoia TRD Pro (ish). I like where the project is going! Toyota has lost their way as far as the Land Cruiser goes.

If anything tundra and sequoia have taken designs from the lc200's. I understand it's easy to make this assumption because land cruisers aren't that popular in the US market but just about every where else in the world these are the go to trucks, besides hilux.

Corby Lambert - Thanks for correcting me. I agree, I was looking at this purely from a North American perspective. I still think they are not aimed at the same market as before though. Don’t you think they have sacrificed some of the off road aspects to cater to the luxury market? Maybe I just liked the image of the older designs. It is said a lot these days that vehicles in each class do start to look very similar. Thanks again Corey. @@shitloveaduck I agree the market has changed in the US, and I do think they have sacrificed for the luxury market. A major limitation to having factory badass trucks or even cars at a reasonable price point is government regulations, emissions, abs, seat belts, airbags, mpg's, catalytic converters. I was just in Africa in February and 70 series were everywhere, Toyota still produces 70 series. I saw some 120's 150's and 200 series too but majority were j79's. We were in Australia last fall and the j70's and j150's were the most popular LC by far. I agree with you, I prefer the older designs. I'd take a brand new double cab j79 if they were offered in the states!

Yup! My 98 100 Series LX is superior to my uncle's 2017 T4R TRD Pro in every way except modern appointments. I don't have a single rattle and anyone riding in mine marvels at it's "tank-like" solidness. My uncles T4R TRD Pro has a few little rattles here and there. I have a rear locker (so comparable to the TRD Pro). He has bent tie rods and control arms. My 98 has never had anything bend despite some big hits. My CVs are significantly beefier than his as are my tie-rods and control arms. The T4R TRD Pro is a great off-roader IMO. But, it's simply NOT a LandCruiser. On identical tires, the 200 would beat the T4R TRD Pro on any terrain.

@@garyeanes4747 that's also the reason why saying a 4runner is the same as an LC Prado is a mistake... a Prado though smaller than an LC is built on the same standards and over-engineering... the 4runner is a very capable vehicle but will not last as long as the Prado... the 4runner is primarily designed for the North American market while LC and Prado are designed for places where the nearest certified service center is 500 kilometers or more away... the LC and Prado are not indestructible but they're built to run with regular maintenance only for 200,000 kilometers without any major breakdown... even the windshields and window glasses of the LC and Prado are thicker than the other vehicles in Toyotas line-up...

Hello TFL, Just like everyone makes mistake comparing this to an LX570, you guys mistake it for being build on Tundra. Only similarity(with Tundra) is the Engine, but even that is build in a completely different country; to be specific, the most iconic Toyota factory which is bench-marked by most. And no, land cruiser is not aimed at the off-road market. It is purely designed for customers who looks for comfortable long distance cruising in tough terrains and locations were reliability and serviceability is paramount. This vehicle has limited applications in USA, hence the low sales volume and the confusion about its market positioning.

Leaf springs vs 4 link, Rear axle is unique, KDSS, completely different more robust frame, yes the IFS shares geometry but not parts (you can actually use tundra lower control arms as a cost-effective long arm high travel mod on the cruiser), the interior switch gear and stereo are completely unique to the LC. The LC is 100% more or less hand built in Japan and the tundra is not.

Let's clean up your research and journalism on the 200 series Land Cruiser. The Land Cruiser is the only Toyota still 100% made in Japan. It does not share a factory with the Lexus 570. It does not share a chassis with the Tundra. The Land Cruiser is its own platform . There is only one factory in Japan that makes Land Cruiser's. Only 2500 Land Cruiser's are shipped to U.S. dealerships per year. The Land Cruiser comes with a variety of better options that get sent to other countries because here in the U.S. they are impracticable, they would be awesome. Try to remember that the Land Cruiser is an iconic member of the 4wheel drive community.

@thefastlanetruck The land cruiser is not based at all on the tundra, it shares little to no parts (other than the engine & trans) with the tundra/Sequoia line. The land cruiser line is the longest-running nameplate that is still around, it's based on the progression of its self not off a cruddy half ton truck built for the US market. It is completely independent and even beefier than the tundra/sequoia chassis. You use the Tundra front lower control arms on the land cruiser as a long arm long travel IFS step up.

The fox shocks on the PRO models don't do any better than the Bilstein's or even the standard Toyota shocks until you start getting in to higher speeds. When the TRD offroad Tacoma starts to bottom out, the fox shocks on a PRO are still controlling the suspension. For part of your base line, a high speed section like a bumpy fire road would go a long way towards showing what the fox shocks can do.

It is. The frame is a shortened and stiffened version of the tundra frame but instead of an open c channel in back for flat beds the lc uses a fully boxed frame for a smoother ride. The lc lx570 sequoia and tundra share 93% or 95% of eachothers components. Put all 4 on a lift and u will see. The old 100 and 105 series used their own chassis. For 07 Toyota migrated the sequoia and tundra to their international 3/4 ton chassis which is why they have 5 lugs instead of the weaker 6 lug hubs from their 1/2 ton chassis. Google it

@@tsangsir8827 no tacoma and 4runner in America are not like the hilux and fortrunner. Toyota made those trucks specifically for the American market which is why the current tacoma is almost as large as the 1st gen tundra and larger than the t100. It uses a much softer suspension for a smoother ride with less payload (2200 vs 1400lbs) and a much longer wheelbase to tow 1500lbs more then a hilux (5000lbs vs 6500lbs). The 2018-19 lc in the us uses the brakes from the current tundra/sequoia because the 08-17 brakes were to small. Thats why people on the cruiser forums who tow alot swap them out. The tundra uses a larger 10.5 hino semi floating rear end with leaf springs vs coil springs on the lc and irs with airbags on sequioa and hydraulic ahc on lx570. These trucks were an international effort between the american truck division, the hino truck division and the Japanese division. Thats why on sequioas and tundras the fuse boxes have blanks for things like auto wipers and heated steering wheels which lcs/lxs have and tundras and sequioas dont. The whole front part of the sequoia past the front windshield is just like the tundra minus the windshield washers on the lights and radar cruise control and a slightly different front bumper design. They even have the same 26 gallon fuel tank in america and use the same fuel pump and fuel guage lever sensor Now the lc/lx570 is built better with higher quality control at a better factory but they are waaay more similar then apart. Just cross reference part #s for all vehicles and u will see most of the main components under the skin are the same. Hell they even use the same aip for emissions in all the trucks. Or the fact that the front suspensions are almost identical (cv axles, hubs, etc) since Toyota didn't want a repeat of the front suspension failures tundras and sequioas which were lighter duty then the 100 series were at the time. I love a lc but because of the chicken tax if u can't afford a 200 series u can get most of the heavy duty stuff that makes those trucks so great in the tundra and sequoia but for a cheaper price. Toyota took the basic running gear and tuned each one different for their intended purposes, tundra for heavy towing hence larger rear axle and open c channel for upfitter boxes, sequoia for a larger interior for Americans hence the longer wheelbase and irs for lower floor for 3rd row passengers and lc for offroading hence the smaller wheelbase from its shortened and stiffened tundra frame. Just google it or look at the press releases from all 4 trucks in America in 07 for tundra and 08 for sequoia and lc

Toyota did a xtrem version here in Dubai last year, very similar in concept to the TRD pro in the States. They still sell FJ cruiser here and also do a xtrem model too 🤗

Don't believe that LC is based on Tundra! They share the same petrol engine. LC has been its own thing; even If one is based on the other, it should be other way around since LC is much older! BTW, its nice you have tons of fun with your son while working! :)

You should have added an ORI score, it would be nice to see a before and after. 1st thing I did on my old Xterra was take the mud flaps off as well. KO2s, 2"lift and skid plates, lose the side steps and good to go. Also 1st ever Roman made me laugh with fridge joke 👍

I don't know about the LC200 but I live and work in the heart of Africa. We only drive stock Land Cruisers though I admit they are 75, 76, 78, 80s and some 105s. They are all very capable. Even pulled out a Unimog once who thought he was invincible 😝

In Africa south america asia the middle east and Australia Toyota sells a poverty pack edition. It has barn swing out doors with 2 spare tires (think old suburban) an auxiliary tank under the 3rd row (which is why it doesn't fold flat in the ground like the sequoia) vinyl seats, rubber floors u can hose out, snorkel, rear locking differential and front winch behind the front bumper. This is the spec the United nations and NATO uses. See if you can get those factory items to add to this truck

At the risk of piling on, I understand the LC was designed in Japan with the entire world in mind. They also strive for a very long service life - 25 years, I believe. It’s built in Japan by senior technicians in the factor and I understand it’s considered a great honor to build LCs. The Tundra and the Sequoia were designed in the US with the US market in mind. They do not appear to be designed with the same kind of long service life. They are also built in the US. In the US market, there are some parts that are probably common or related, but I suspect that may have much to do with the costs of our federalization process. While we get the full boat LC here, there appear to be more versions available, including some that are much more basic. I do believe that the LC is not designed to be nearly the rock crawler the earliest LCs were, but, rather, is designed to be able to go anywhere there are roads (of whatever description) in the world. Why they deliver them here with such crappy tires is probably a function of the first buyers. You can usually tell the ones that are actually used as intended by the tires. That’s all I’ve changed so far and it made a huge difference in snow and mud. BTW, there are TRD parts for the LC available in Japan - although they didn’t really appeal to me. I’m thinking about blacking out the trim, getting the Tundra TRD Pro wheels and wrapping mine in Voodoo blue. I’m also thinking about losing the sidesteps. If I lived out your way, I would look into a small lift and some proper bumpers that include a way to carry the spare behind, rather than below. We’ll see when I actually get to it, but it’s great so far!

Toyota is stupid expensive! Yes I know they are reliable but not everyone has that kind of money to buy the rig n spend another 10 k or more on suspension n other off road parts you want! I have 08 LR3 HSE this thing is tank hardly ever stuck anywhere. Yes not reliable as your Toyota but I got this dirt cheap and does the job.. A new Land Cruiser is $76K while an Escalade is $64K on cars.com. While a 2009 with less than150,000 miles the LC is $26K and a Escalade is $17K. A new LX570 3-row is $92K while a 2009 is $27K. So the LC drops $50K and the Escalade only drops $48K. Toyota LC is not luxurious and should not have that depreciation compared to another luxury marque.the LX is more like a luxury vehicle in it's high depreciation of $65 in last decade.

What’s the fascination with Toyota? They are junk. My father in law’s ‘18 Land Cruiser sat at the dealership for 2 months waiting on an airbag recall. Dealer couldn’t get the part to fix it. He wound up selling it back to dealership for a ‘19. I drove that thing from Dallas to OKC and back to Dallas. I wasn’t impressed. At highway speeds it struggles to maintain speed and stay straight. Also, I stopped 3x’s for fuel Did the same route in my wife’s 2015 Denali towing an open trailer loaded with a 2017 Mustang GT. DENALI tracked straight and I did the whole trip in 1 tank. Ok, Denali is not made for off-road, but not sure what the land cruiser is designed to do. Go from gas station to gas station? Wonder in a highway lane? I’ll take a Tahoe, Yukon, or Escalade any day over a land cruiser. When I want to go off road, I’ll take my Jeeps!

I usually agree with you guys about the reviews you do, but this one...?! not too sure! I don't believe putting a lift and modifying the amazing suspension this car has would help you do anything extra! I would probably change the tires and that's it. IMO the only problem (if you call it a problem) is that the car is huge and you're trying to make this car go to tight spots... everything else is tuned to the highest levels of standard for off roading...! this car is not your Junk Yukon or Tahoe... and clearly it's not build on a TUNDRA. I dont know where you guys got that information from.

I have loved Toyota 4x4's. Currently I have a 2001 Sequoia that I bought new in 2000 after owning a used Land Cruiser for 5 years. But now, the cyber truck is all I want. It does every thing I need. I look forward to getting one when they come out and owning it for 20 years if the batteries make it. Will find out. I have no problem at some point buying replacement batteries if needed.

What makes the Land Cruiser more capable than the 4Runner Limited? If I’m not mistaken, the 4Runner Limited has the same 4WD with the same Torsen Center locking diff. The 4Runner I believe has better approach, departure, and over angles.

I am surprised their corporate (FIAT Headquarters) is letting them work on a Toyota. Perhaps this will be a stunt to try and fail the LC and make it look bad to sell more Jeeps. Everytime they do something with a 4Runner or Tacoma they stonewall it (leave it in 2wd don't lock the diff) so it will struggle on the hill next to the Jeep, this is really cheap theatrics that is very insulting!

Over 5000 Pounds and off-road dont mix together well. This SUV has to fight a lot against gravity during climbing and traction is more important than 4x4 during most situations. The weight of this vehicle will turn into the biggest enemy during few situations and gravity will always win. It is a great vehicle to certain extent, but when pushed beyond that threshold will have parts falling apart.

I love TFL but this is not representative at all. I have a 2008 and I’ve had it in all kinds of scenarios in snow and ice in Minnesota at different grades and it destroys everything. Bad example, not off-road, but in a 12” Blizzard on Mille Lacs I was passing people left and right and was the best vehicle on the road

If y’all actually do your research there is a TRD Landcruiser but I don’t think it’s available in the states. Take it from a person who owns 3 cruisers: 06, 08, and a 18. These are the most reliable vehicles to ever be produced and all the big diesel truck companies such as Ford Ram and Chevrolet should be thankful that we don’t have the diesel Landcruiser here in the states because if we did there sales numbers would drop tremendously.
