I feel you Jim. The ones that we have as architects are really kids rather than real ones that grew up in the era when we had truly reliable elevators. When I was a kid, the vintage gated Rotary Dover in Kirkwood was what I rode, and the building at 777 South New Ballas Road had Long elevators with white buttons. I wish I was a lead elevator tech that would travel the country. Then if I had that job, I would be traveling the country showing these people how to modernize these elevators right.

But here’s something cool to think about - Imagine this newly modded elevator a couple decades (or even over 60 years) into the future (if the elevator is still in service)! I’d always wonder how that would be. Modern day elevators, 50-60 years into the future.

Nice video I work at Nashville International Airport they modified a Dover elevator replaced the call buttons and indicator and the buttons inside it Kone modified it and it stays broken all the time. Then they installed a brand new Kone elevator beside it. And that elevator has stayed broken too. I’m afraid to ride them. Cause of this

It made the buzz (or hiss sound) because both the SmartRise and Dover were run by hydraulic. It makes 2 noises when the elevator goes up, and 1 noise when it goes down. Cable elevators happen to make a silent noice.

As disappointed as you may be, you have to remember that everything ages through gradual wear-and-tear. When a machine begins to show its age (e.g. constant breakdowns or creaking) it’s more justifiable in the long run to replace it because maintenance costs will rise significantly. They did this for a reason

SmartRise? Such an UNPOPULAR generic brand. I've never been hearing that brand ever… Here in Indonesia, the same goes for us in Jakarta. Many old elevators especially the ones in The Sultan Hotel in Jakarta got a semi-generic Korean modernization. From American Otis turned into Samil. Many of our old elevators got modernized into crap, terrible, and unsafe generic elevators.

I think the mod for the Dover is more pointless than the Westinghouse cuz the Westinghouse had big jolts, dinner bell didn’t work, and the motor didn’t sound good. However the Dover ran better than the Westinghouse. It had a good motor, the bell worked, and there were no jolts

At least, the elevators now have EPIC MOTOR, but I don't like those buttons as they look so cheap & generic rip off of MAD BS. Also, wiring two completely different elevators to a common controller doesn't make sense, as they are different brands, different doors types and they have different capacities (The DOVER is more bigger than the Westinghouse).

The problem isn't elevators being modernized, its building owners installing cheap junk like this. Replacing an old elevator with something high quality (say, a Kone with the Ecodisc motor or a Schindler 5500 or the latest Thyssenkrupp or even an Otis Gen2) can turn out great. Replacing an old elevator with cheap/boring generic stuff (in Australia the Dewhurst US95 with blue LEDs seems to be the default choice for basically every mod)
