It's funny how he believed Ruyi was smitten with him because he saved her... like he didnt also save the last empress too and touched her to drag her out of the water. Like he really does not care or trust his servants at all if he can constantly promote and demote them on a whim. He saved the last empress, he saved Ruyi countless times, he saves her AGAIN from being STABBED, and he tortures both of them. The amount of power and stupidity this emperor has is ridiculous.

I believe when Wei Yanwan was being mistreated by Jia and Jia took wei yanwan to the morning meeting with the other harem ladies and the empress the other consorts were talking about how jia shouldn’t treat yanwan like crap cuz the emperor is so “gracious” with his servants. 💀💀💀

Ling Yunche's love transcends into such a powerful bond with Ruyi that both Wei Yanwan and His Majesty saw that they were each other's "CONFIDANTE" and they were just ENVIOUS and COVENTOUS of their KINSHIP.

Ruyi condemned Hailan for killing Ling Yunche. He was innocent but even if Ruyi had proved the mushrooms poisonous/tainted which the Dowgar Empress later did, the emperor would never have let Long Yunche live in peace. He was going to destroy him one way or another, sooner or later. The emperor was jealous of the fact that Ruyi held any man in high regard other than himself. He refused to acknowledge that he destroyed the regard she had for him by his mistreatment of her. There are many tragic figures in this story but I believe Ling Yunche was the most tragic. He was ordered to befriend and protect Ruyi in the cold palace which ultimately lead to his death. Had Ruyi realized what his fate would become due to her, I believe she would have sent him permanently to the Mulan hunting grounds or somewhere else outside the Forbidden City to protect him. Of course if the emperor thought she was protecting him, his jealousy would have had him zeroed in on him sooner as someone to be destroyed. Ling Yunche never had a chance, just like all the other characters used as pawns by the elite.

Honestly, this is one of the things that I absolutely love about this version of the story. It is the attention to the writing. The use of parallels when it comes to different women that try to tear down Ruyi or try to be power hungry. This is ultimately exactly what happened with the first empress. She tried to use her son to "compete" with Ruyi and she lost the child. Measure for measure indeed.

If I remember correctly, I think even the empress dowager believed that. She had said that hailan and Ruyi raised that boy perfectly to be emperor and Hailan would have been the perfect empress dowager. But of course, the emperor in his clouded judgement, refused to treat other women in the harem with the same strictness as he did Ruyi and so, Yanwan's son becomes emperor.
