If the emperor wasn't a paranoid narcissist, this would have been a happier harem. Instead, his insincerity, suspicion and insatiable lust built a harem of serial criminals and killers. Ruyi was the ONLY one who had ANY real feelings for him, but again and again his suspicious nature prevented him from having any true feelings for anyone, including Ruyi. I find the character of the emperor disgusting and the only instigator of these murderous women. It was because of HIM and his debauchery, and the fact that he 'played' his women off each other that turned all of the into schemers and some of them into murderers, even the Empress killed without remorse. He didn't even have a deep love for his children, punishing them for being kids influenced by their greedy and disillusioned mothers. I really loathed the emperor.

Wei Yanwan’s fate was even WORSE than what this clip would suggest. She turns out to still be alive by the next morning, because the Emperor ordered that she be given the antidote to save her life. But then, on the emperor’s orders, the servant girl and the guard who both testified against her arrive and force-feed her the exact same poison, making her experience the same pain all over again. But even then, she is presumably given the antidote once again, because she is shown to still be alive (albeit implied to have gone insane) nine years later. ONLY THEN is she given a bowl of “soup” that turns out to be the final dose of poison to finish her off.

I would assume normally bowing is meant to show respect, but being forced to bow, to me, would 1. Demonstrate she is so disrespectful that she needs to be forced to bow (I liken it to a child being forced to apologize) 2. By being forced to bow it shows she isn’t deserving of her rank and everything that comes with it 3. For her, being the (technically) top dog in the harem, and knowing how much of a narcissistic/arrogant/hypocritical/unaccountable person she is, this must be such a hit to her pride as well.
