That course made me open so many doors in my surfing! I recommend it to all the landlocked kooks like me that dream of one day being decent surfers! The content is amazing and the skills are explained in a way that is very transferrable from skate to surf. It's even more fun to surf now that I can generate speed and do some bottom turns!

Mate I bought a smoothstar two days ago, mucked around on it for an hour on day 1, then went for a surf the next morning and without even thinking about it all the movements totally translated into my surfing. It was wild. Thanks heaps. Will definitely buy your whole course. Cheers

Great stuff. Always done a lot of sport, but I started surfing about 4 years ago with my 7 year old son. Got hooked, and now on my surf skate whenever I get some free time. These exercises are perfect for me - thanks! 48 years young now. Most cave in to what society expects of them at a certain age. Their loss. Any time until the end of time!

I am originally a skater who's started surfing recently, and I could feel how quick I can pick up surfing technics just by being a skater. The two disciplines are definitely connected and this is exactly the video I was looking for since I don't live so close from the ocean !!! So thank you so much
@alanguages3 жыл бұрын
Definitely. Any board sport will have transferable skills, which makes the next one easier to learn. You could even try snowboarding afterwards, and see how much faster you will learn that, since you have two other board sports under your belt.

The section Kale has on being able to pump up hill is critical. Shit, I'm 65 and can still do it. He doesn't say it directly, but he is essentially using skating to teach functionally connecting turns when surfing. When you get it dialed you should be able to drive off the bottom AND top if so desired frontside or back. Overall, this guy seems to be a pretty good coach. 👍👍
@jimmcmaster62272 жыл бұрын
Great video. I watched others before you and they were saying the start of the pump needs to be on the toe side and not to swing your upper body. Neither point made sense to me. Then I see your video and you are preaching exactly what I was thinking….. you can pump from either side and the upper body starts it all!

After watching one of your vids from a year or 2 ago, we got our 3 groms a smoothstar (8, 7, & 5 yrs old) to improve their surfing. It was delivered about 2 weeks ago and they’ve been practicing on it ever since. My 7 year old son was quick to get the technique down and it’s amazing how quickly it translated to his surfing. He is now pushing off from rail to rail and compressing and generating speed down the line which he was never able to figure out. Pretty amazing. Im still working with my girls on their compression & board skills but my oldest is beginning to compress her lower body and generate some noticeable speed along the wave face. Been trying to find some more instructional surfskate videos so they can keep improving their technique but haven’t found really any good ones. So, stoked to find that you put a course together. 29$ is a real good deal. I went to purchase the course just now but my CC was declined. I’m guessing fraud protection. (We’re in Hawaii. Same thing happened when we tried to purchase the Smoothstar from Australia. Declined.) Anyway, I’ll call the bank tomorrow and get it fixed and make the purchase. Anyway, just wanted to say thanks for the always excellent instructional videos. Theyve been a big part of our kiddos progression. They’re already ripping at a pretty young age. We try to surf every day as a family. But super stoked about SurfSkating-it seems to be a major trick to developing board skillz on land. Huge! Thanks again! 🤙

What is the difference between these boards and say your typical arbor pocket rocket cruiser or quality penny board with loose trucks, I mean if your working on turning seems like the effect would be the same. The shape of the board is different (more so with penny obviously) but other than that.....

Thanks so much for the great content! I just bought my first Smoothstar as well as your course and went through the basic lessons. There is one thing that really confuses me. From my limited experience, it appears to me that simply 'wiggling' the back of the board (rotation of the hips and pushing sideways with the back foot) allows for much faster and efficient propulsion on the Smoothstar than when adding the pumping (squatting) movement. However, I have a suspicion that this movement would not transfer well to surfing. Its a bit hard to tell from your videos, because there are often slow-motion (by how much did you slow it down?) but it also seems to me that you are more 'wiggling' more and pumping less once you have to work really hard your way up the hill at 4:26 The sequence right after shows you again with more pumping / squatting but seemingly _less_ propulsion. Is this strong pumping just something that should be done to transfer better to surfing or does it also help the skating with the Smoothstar itself? Any pointers from Kale Brock or others highly appreciated!
@KalesBroccoli4 жыл бұрын
Tightening the pumping just reduces the time between each pump. Going up hill you can expect to rely less on momentum and need to fit in more pumps to move.
@friederwittmann71044 жыл бұрын
@@KalesBroccoli Thanks for the fast reply Kale! So, at lower speeds, one uses a higher turn frequency with smaller pumps? So perhaps, that means I need less or almost no pumps because I'm still very slow? For your slow motions, do you use a fixed speed reduction, and if so, what is the factor? I think this could really help in getting a feel for the different riding speeds.

This makes so much sense as a way to improve surfing skills - but what if you skate the other way around to the way you surf.......eg surf - regular and skate goofy....yep - that's me - and switching in either sports feels just mad sketchy, I'm so unsteady and unsure on my feet if I skate Regular or Surf Goofy.....what then? Surely the train wouldn't apply? Or do you think the pumping and leaning into big turns is translated between sports even if done facing a different way?
