Generals fighting each other in a 1vs1 were indeed a rare ocurrence but other known similar situations happened: in the Battle of the Hellespont early in the wars of the Diadochi when opposing commanders Eumenes and Neoptolemus fought each other, Philopoemen general of the Acheans also fought in a duel against Machanidas the regent of Sparta during a battle, and Marcus Claudius Marcellus fought and killed a Gallic king in battle, this earned him the Spolia Opima among the highest and rarest honors a roman could win; if Aquilius truly killed Athenion this could had earned this same honor but the romans had a very low opinion of slaves and beating them in battle or in a duel even they truly were dangerous and a menace was not seen as something especial.

Barnaby Duggan Most of the times it wasn’t Rome seeking battle. Besides, that’s untrue. They assimilated the people they conquered and gave them citizenship. Slaves and massacres were something that everyone did at the time, so cheering for one side or another just because of that is inconclusive as both do the same things.

I am aware of that but Sulla did fight under Marius, even in the Jugurthine wars, it was Sulla who captured Jugurtha and Marius took credit, and by the time the Mithridatic wars started, Sulla had already outranked Marius, that’s when the jealous Marius marched on Rome and killed Sulla’s supporters, Sulla took reprisals when he returned, triumphantly after the battle of the Colline gate.

As a history scholar & admirer of Spartacus' gladiator war, I really appreciate this endeavor to bring the other Servile Wars to the public's attention in such an entertaining & informative way. I also couldn't help but think while I was watching this what a great TV series this story would make, much like what Starz did with Spartacus. Man, the period of 120BC - 100BC was an...interesting time to be alive. In Rome you had the death Gaius Gracchus and the fallout that ensued, the twelve year long Cibrian War, and then the second Servile War. Meanwhile in China you had the whole wars against the Xiongnu and the brief war with Bactria over the heavenly horses. If there's one thing you can say about that generation it's that life certainly wasn't boring.

@@avinashankamreddi9113 lad, my comment was a joke. I mean that in nowadays that here and now you wanna grab some ppl and go kill other people. It, by all means, was not meant to be taken seriously

These animations for the character introduction or eg. the duels are just glorious! Especially the one for Gaius Marius and Manius Aquillius at 14:10.

This is amazing! You don't hear a lot about slave rebellions(for a good reason: the slave owners didn't want people to know). I'm glad that you are informing us.
