Kings and Generals is starting another animated historical documentary series, this time about the most prominent Slave Rebellions in the Roman Republic. These so-called Servile Wars, among them those on Sicily and the one led by Spartacus were able to shake Rome and probably were among the reasons the Republic would be transformed into the Empire. Most area of magna graecia (sicily included) was very, VERY wealthy back in antiquity. This is caused by the massive settlement (migration) of greeks due to various reason (usually famine or crisis) and then develops into trade cities, making them centers of trade and commerce in ancient times.

Thank you for these videos about Rome you guys. It brings me back to good times with my grandpa, he was huge on all things Roman. Had a huge collection of most books ever written or translated into my language about Rome before the year 2000. He'd spend hours telling me stories about stuff like this. Deep into his Alzheimer's he'd continue talking about Rome, occasionally losing the thread and just as quickly picking up another one. When people talk about Cicero (his favorite Roman) my mind automatically imagines him as my gramps. I brought up the idea of putting Cicero's "The life of the dead is placed on the memories of the living." on his tombstone but my family weren't big fans. I hope grandpa, from somewhere beyond, appreciated the thought at least haha. I miss him dearly, thanks again for all the hard work you put into these. From narration, animation, writing and researching, top notch job on all fronts.

Back in the days 12 years old kids were sent to work as miners 12 hours a day. Conditions were horrible and if the workers dare to strike or protest the goverment sends the army and shoot people in the street. The working class needed the marxist-leninist ideology and the communist party and unions to fight for their cause.

Nicely done. I have but one comment. After the first Punic War the western part of Sicily was controlled by Hieron II. It was only after Marcellus's siege of Syracuse that the Romans got full control over this part of the island.

First of anti roman revolts to be covered?! Oh man, please cover the Iberian Peninsula revolts and wars against Roman conquest! See Viriato's role over the Celtiberian Wars and Lusitanian Wars, and the final clash with the Cantabrian Wars, an end so dark and brutal that even Octavian Caesar did not wanted a Triumph on his return to Rome!

The Celtiberians and the rest of the peoples of ancient Iberia are some of the most underrated badasses of the Ancient World, never fully conquered by Carthage, it took Rome like century and a half to fully control the region, they formed the core of Sertorius' guerilla, also repelled the same german tribes that had just dealt Rome its worst defeat since the times of Hannibal, Numancia resisted years under siege until the best roman general of his generation ended the conflict, etc.; it is sad that in general they are pretty much unknown.

@@Sealdeam Actually it took Octavion 10 years to conquer the last bastion of Hispania. They put up a good fight but ultimately only one legion would be stationed in the entire region for *400 years.* Which says a lot.

@@CrazyNikel It talks a lot in regards on how throughout the devastation was , the Cantabrian Wars were notable among other things because no quarter was asked nor given by the parts involved, after ten years of warfare involving 8 legions I suppose that those peoples simply dissapeared as separated ethnic groups similarly as it had happened before with other roman enemies like the Aequi, the Samnites and the Cimbrian and their cousins the Teutons.

All slave societies are well armed, paranoid, surveillance states which rely on internal police and on networks of cowed informers to maintain control. If you are prepared to judge the slaves just make sure that you have a real understanding of how unrelenting vile ALL slave systems really are.

The advantage of peasants/slave revolt is usually high moral, sheer numbers and possible allies hidden behind enemy lines/cities. Which all could be easily deterred by one or two successful ambush/defense.

Just a slight correction, though: the city in northern Calabria, near Thurii (modern day Rossano) is not called "Cosentra" but "Cosentia" or "Consentia", from the word "Consensum" because it was founded by a Brutian league. It still exists now, and it is called Cosenza.
