In the third film, she makes statements like "we've had a good run" and things like "we've last longer than I thought we would". I think it stems back to here. Who didn't show up? There are indications in this movie that she struggles to maintain and closes the book on her relationships that she has historically held at a distance. Even in _Before Sunrise_ she talks about guys that she "thought were going to last longer" in regards to a relationship. Not knocking her specifically, but consistency and evolution of a character, especially across 18 years, has to have some invisible threads of consistent personality. :) So subtle yet unbelievably organic and intricate. For being the more cynical in the first film, I definitely believe Jesse is the more romantic of the two throughout the trilogy.
@lindsaymorrison75193 жыл бұрын
I'm a big fan of viewing this couple through the MBTI personality type lens, and a lot of people think Celine is INFP, like I am. I think we tend to have more abandonment issues and a nagging doubt that we can't actually trust or rely on anyone other than ourselves... Infps are incredibly idealistic and we rarely meet anyone who can live up to those ideals, but that's actually something ENFJs (like Jesse) experience a lot too. They internalize it less and that actually enables them to help others be better versions of themselves.

Also notice she says "I was about to fly to Vienna, and then we heard the news about her..." In the first movie she mentions being terrified of flying, she says "I'm afraid of death 24 hours a day... that's why I'm in a train right now. I could have flown to Paris, but I'm too scared." So here, 9 years later, she wants Jesse to believe that 6 months after avowing this crippling fear of flying, she was "about" to fly from Paris to Vienna when a train was still an option? I think this is Linklater winking at us that Celine (as a commenter below says, the "closet cynic") never actually made a concrete plan, and that her grandmother dying may have even gave her a sense of relief. A lot of guilt followed for sure, but I don't think it's 100% that Celine would've showed, even if her grandmother hadn't passed that week. But I guess it's the closet romantic in me that still wants to believe she would've

Julie's English is excellent, and her Chemistry with Ethan Hawke is outstanding, seamless and entirely natural. They just flow so beautifully and perfectly together, amazingly so. The perfect couple in so many ways. And kudos to each for writing such a great movie featuring dialogue that's wholly original, sharp, innovative, hip, and steeped in much heartwarming reflection, while being intimately familiar on so many levels (the type that most of us can relate to from time to time). For there truly is a genuine and heartfelt poignancy to this movie, one that is sweetly endearing, and wonderfully stirring, at a deeper, more soulful level. Maybe a 4th in the series should be in the works.

She really did live in New York. On and off for years, I believe. Starting in 1990, though she moved to L.A. a few years after that. I know she came back, because I used to know a woman who was living with a friend of mine in Manhattan. She became Delpy's personal assistant or something. So she had plenty of chances to practice her English. It's quite impossible to imagine anyone else playing Céline. But we should remember, Linklater shaped both roles to the actors playing them, a process that went on over the next two films. Part of why it feels so organic and unforced is, they're playing alternate universe incarnations of themselves.

I immediately watched the second part, and it really made me feel painful while watching this scene. Young and charming in the first one and old and tired in the next one. Big differences and real. It ached me! The wrinkles and dullness on their faces, their yearning magical eyes, her beautiful English, his passionate love on her had me into tears. Making this movie series with exactly 9years gap between, made sense and real. God I love them both! ❤️

I totally think Celine was lying about her grandmother dying on the exact same day they were supposed to meet. I think she made up that lie because she actually was afraid to go to Vienna in case Jesse decided not to show up. She was the one who hyper idealized that night and put it into this giant bubble, not wanting to allow anything or anyone to ruin her romantic conceptions. I think "grandma" was alive and kickin for a good long while after that December 16th. You can tell by her eyes, because Julie Delpy is a masterclass of an actress, that Celine is protecting herself from admitting to Jesse her insecurities about WHY she wasn't there in Vienna. One of my favorite scenes in this film, because everything feels so truly organic. Ethan and Julie are two incredible actors and writers, for sure.
