Lord Debling was never attracted to Penelope, he makes it clear he was only looking for a housekeeper on the outskirts of society with no prior connections so when he's away for years he can be content that she wouldn't have an affair while he's gone. Penelope had to pursue him, not the other way around.

@@mxmax2621 I mean, that is kind of true, but I think it's also a little harsh. Lord Debling does have genuine interest in Penelope, even if it's not the romantic sort. Maybe he doesn't want love, but I think it's clear he wants a marriage built on respect and friendship. Which, let's be honest, is a better foundation than mere physical attraction. Debling is practical, but he's not heartless, and he thinks highly of Penelope. Well... he _did_ think highly of her... it's possible his opinion has changed after realizing her feelings for Colin, but we don't know for sure. I hope we find out with part 2!

@@giggle_snort How is it harsh? I'm stating a fact, he doesn't have a genuine interest in Penelope. He only approaches her when she's either alone and only becomes interested when she admits she's an outsider pretending to fit in, every other time she had to pursue him. He was only looking for a lady on the outskirts of the ton to look after his estate so there was little to no chance she could cheat while he was away for years, and stopped pursing Penelope when it became clear there was someone else in the picture. I'll give him props for removing himself from the situation because he did not want to be cuckolded, but saying he was genuinely attracted or had a honest interest in Penelope is simply not true.

His armor truly came off around Penelope and hardly anyone else in his life after what happened with Marina and losing sense of purpose when returning home in season 2.
