Very nice story. I felt sad that young fellow sacrificed himself. I really hate wars. I like to think they had a great romantic night in that motel. I love to think they both made a happy family together for themselves. I wish they both are living happily today in their ripe old age. I hope to think they both had thousands of passionate romantic nights together. Life will be harder if your Gander flys away to heaven without even first kiss with you, and you are left alone in cold , dark and damp night. Is it not?

Incredibly painful. Incredibly personal. I graduated from high school in 1968. By the time I finished freshman year at college, two of my high school classmates came home from Vietnam in a coffin.

Mom and Dad were a bit older. Class of '65. They lost too many friends, family, and classmates. We never had the television on during dinnertime; and I don't remember watching the evening news with them. I realized years later that they wanted to protect the innocence of childhood. They didn't want to have to explain the news footage and the list of names to a little girl.

About halfway into the story I could see where this was going...I had a cousin in Vietnam who wasn't killed but came back damaged and drank himself to death at 35. I feel sick

Whyyyy!? And just when they were realizing that they were in love:'( He didn't even get to kiss him!! I guess not everyone gets a happy ending but I think Landon just wasn't the one and that he will find someone who will love him just as much...I want closure though!!

Viet Nam , a war never declared and no closure to be had. Happy endings were few and far between for that time.
