Don't Buy an Intel Quick Sync for Video Editing Until You Watch THIS!

To be clear, this Windows machine IS a better video editing experience than the Max MacBook Pro overall IN h.264 due to GPU when working with effects, but, it doesnt come close when editing in h.265 (as far as timeline smoothness) like I was expecting it to. I see absolutely zero benefit with the whole Quick Sync thing based on how I video edit but I'm sure it is useful in the right area... Unfortunately it didnt benefit me like I hoped it would.

Are you using DaVinci Resolve, or Resolve Studio? Hardware coding support is only in Studio.

I've been rocking resolve studio for a few years now. Love it! The Apple Max chips laptops sure rock Resolve well... I never once made proxies when I had my M3 and M1 Max laptops. I have a 4070 super TI with the 14th gen i7 now and I have to make proxies for every video. Crazy.

@squatch545 yeah it still bogs a bit which I couldn't believe. I've tested the speed of my SSD I've made sure that the RAM is running at full speed... I'm using quick sync, And it still doesn't edit as well as I had hoped. It does some things better like magic masks and tracking which is nice and I appreciate.

I kind of feel like maybe it could be that Davinci Resolve isn't as optimized to use the dGPU and iGPU at the same time for this kind of tasks in comparision to other software like Premiere Pro?

Definitely. The only reason I hammer the point home is because the guys at Puget Systems specifically said this setup is good for DaVinci... now that I've switched to h.264 it's pretty good... maybe as good as the M3 Max MacBook Pro? But to be fair, that laptop costs a LOT more.

im trying to decide between a 7800x3d or i9 12900k for gaming performance, streaming, and video editing, im avoiding the 13th and 14th gen due to their issues. what would you recommend with a 4070ti super

It's a tough call... Since you should probably use proxies anyways I would probably get the 7800 x 3D since it's just goated at this point. I'm sure it video edits just fine also. With that being said was back to school and soon with black Friday there's going to be some awesome sales soon. But I know how exciting it is to build it now! Let me know what you decide.

Could you get a copy of Premiere Pro, like a trial version or a torr or the like, and test out editing on there using the Mercury Playback Engine - set to GPU. I know you're Davinci, I'm not suggesting you switch, but it would be interesting to confirm that it is in fact encoders, and not the actual DaVinci software. Cause it's weird, my GPU is weaker then yours, but I have a lot more RAM (128gb) and when I edit in premiere pro, it's super smooth 🤷‍♂

You're right that would be an interesting test and be very telling about whether the hardware or software is the problem/bottleneck. I'm a little limited on time at the moment but you have planted a seed with me so thanks for that! Honestly though since switching to h.264 it has been editing like a beast. I'm happy with it in this codec with footage out of camera.

The A750 can be found very cheaply used. Would be very interesting to seenhow it does. I have one, which is being used for Emby transcoding, but have not tried editing

Hei, I am thiking about buying the i7 14700k for video editing on premiere pro/ae. Heard that the new micro patch fixed the intel issues. Should i go for it .?? or get the recent amd 9900x .... both are same price at my area. also concerned hows the heating on i7 14700k...

To be honest, since the microcode update I feel like my computer runs hotter... It still runs well but all the fans come on when I'm video editing without proxies. And while I'm gaming it just pumps out more heat than I remember it doing before. Honestly it's really hard to recommend right now. I've been on vacation for the last 10 days and I'm a little bit out of what the latest has been when it comes to the CPU world. I know the AMD chip doesn't seem quite as exciting as people expected but it is the newest and latest which I like to be honest I'd be very curious about using it myself. I think my takeaway after going through all this was that if I have to use proxies anyways it doesn't really matter which one I use. Do you plan on doing any gaming? And have you decided on a GPU?

I wonder if there is something that is just not sync'd with your new computer? I have sometimes found that to be the case with all things computers, that something is just not talking to the other thing.

Yeah you know I've been tinkering around with the new computer a lot making sure the ram/hdd/cpu/gpu etc are operating at the correct speeds and they all are. Maybe h.265 is just that much harder to work on than h.264??

I’m glad we got somewhere with this even if it was just to confirm everything was set up correctly. Sadly for .265, it would seem that it’s still not got great support and .264 is better. The last thing is that M series chips are SOCs and that just gives massive benefits when it comes to interconnect and also, they RIP 😂

Yeah man! I'm happy back at the ol' h.264. I like to shoot in 30fps and my Sony Zv-e1 in h.265 doesn't support 30fps so... I've come full circle! I was going to shoot you some credit for helping me brainstorm in the video but wasn't sure if you wanted the attention towards your channel. I'd be happy to in future vids though! Now I'm just praying that using my CPU more while video editing won't degrade it faster (Stinkin' Intel!).

I'd really love to work with you more and help out wherever I can, so that would be great :) Yeh intel 13th and 14th are in a bit of trouble lately but I don't think you need to worry as they've found the problem and it's just a bit of microcode. Patches incoming soon so I'm sure you'll be fine :) I think the H.265 decoding is a bit of a red herring at best, deceitful at worst. Just become it can decode enough to play 30fps doesn't mean it can edit in a way that would make a user happy, I think you've proven that, whilst also demonstrating that currently H.264 is your best bet for happy times when editing. Also, credit where it's due to Apples Silicon, the M series chips really take full advantage of having everything integrated and perform brilliantly in the tasks that should benefit from it. AMD's new mobile lineup is looking interesting though.. even if it's naming scheme is trash!

To be honest, I'm not completely sure. What are you using right now? Is it a bad experience? And have you tried using proxies with your current setup? Proxies are just so awesome they pretty much solve a lot of problems to people don't even have to upgrade often by just learning how to use them.

Hi SAHD, It sounds like your Nvidia GPU and Intel CPU are fighting to be the main decode hardware accelerator. 1. Go to Preferences 2. Select the tab Decode Options 3. UNSELECT Nvidia (Leave Intel Quick Sync Checked) 4. Save and close 5. Restart DaVinci Resolve Let me know if this fixed the problem. I did all that testing when I first got it and I felt disappointed with the performance. But I've switched drivers and updated the Intel bios so I will do more testing. I'm just on vacation for a week but I'll be sure to test it out when I get back and you know if I get some good results I'll make a video about it! I really appreciate you sharing 👊👊

It's a good question. I personally would only buy the Max chip... And to get a new one it's just so much money. Plus I like to game... So I like the Windows option better. Though now isn't the time to buy an Intel CPU (Google Intel CPU issues). But if you are interested in the Apple ecosystem the Pro would certainly be worth considering. If you do light video editing it's fine, but the Max was just so much better. I returned the m3 Pro and bought a m1 Max instead and was happy with that choice

@@thesahdstudio I have 12600K + 3070 PC. But I'm struggling with this PC. I can't do any little tasks in Fusion, If I use a magic mask and add some motion graphics elements, it won't play even with proxies. then I use the render cache. It will take so much time. I think m3 max is what I need to go with. Rather than upgrading the CPU and GPU.

Also, I'm a die-hard Android and Windows fan. I'm not interested in any Apple products or their ecosystem. Also playing games every day. But the thing is, DaVinci is more stable with Mac os than Windows. I'll keep my PC for gaming and 3D work. Buy a Macbook for video editing.

Well that's what I'm thinking... at similar clock speeds I can't see any reason they wouldn't absolutely shred video editing h.264 codec like the Intel did in this video without Quick Sync. Maybe they would crumble at h.265 but then you'd just make proxies anyway like you would with the Intel. I might get a chance to play around on a friends AMD Ryzen within the next month or so, so you know I will be testing that out if I get the chance and letting everyone know!

Oh yeah that's a great idea! I wish I had the resources to get a MacBook Air to test it out. If I had to guess I would say the Intel setup would win but now I'm curious as to just how good those Airs are! 👊
