Great explanations of many of the curly cutting styles! I'm a cut-it-myself girl. I never wear my hair straight, and I don't feel the need to have my curls be in perfect order. I just need my ends to be healthy.

I'm a lazy older ragamuffin. I get my hair cut even with no layers. I've only had it straightened one time in over 10 years. That was a couple of months ago. I was impressed with the length, but Florida humidity and hot flashes are evil. Besides that, I wasn't impressed with having to maintain straightened hair.

Very informative. Most stylists cut hair based on the technique they were trained in, which varies. I tend to prefer even blunt ends cutting, especially for thin hair types. But, as you mentioned, the hair ultimately should be cut based on style desired and personal preferences. Must always be consistent and have order though.

Great video. There’re so many types of cutting techniques and also some stylists develop their own. What you said of the CIK style cuts rings true to me. The main reason those shapes appealed to me is because I really love the manicured shapes you get at the barber!

I feel you on the lazy part. I hate going to the salon. Every time I see a Rezo cut it looks very round. Looks very short at the top and I think I can’t with my texture. I need weight at the top. The sharp angles of the amplified curl cut do grow out nice. You actually can go longer in between cuts when you get really sharp angles. I think a lot of stylist mix these styles or pull out technique based on the client in the chair.

I agree. My stylist is trained in about 3 different cutting techniques and I think she just does the best cut for what’s in her chair.

Wonderful look at different cutting techniques and considerations for choosing the right one for our needs. Unfortunately, your video comes too late for me 😢! Last August I got a "Curly Cut," when my hair was just above bra strap length. My goal for how I wear my hair was to be able to wear wash and go's, increase volume, and to retain length for more options like ponytails and buns... It was my fault that the stylist cut off much of my length and cut the top of my hair short to add volume... my fault because I did not show her pictures of my hair favs and apparently I did not explain my goals in general well enough... partially her fault because she did not encourage me to explain my needs for the end result. My hair has not been the same since, given the layering which felt choppy. The stylist is a great curly cut specialist, but she was short and somewhat hurried, at least with me. And, in hindsight I was less than assertive and should have asked her to slow down to ensure we were on the same page. Bottom line, we should go into a cut of any kind, knowing exactly what we want, be able to fully express our desires and to stop the process if necessary!

Most stylists tend to have a signature way of cutting and styling hair. If you see someone with the cut you want, if possible its best to book with their particular stylist. Some hair cuts and styles may simply be out of some stylists comfort zone, but they will still attempt it. Or without a photo they may not be able to conceptualize it just based on a verbal description. Always bring a photo/s.

I'm not far from Sacramento, and there are stylists in Sac who cut kinky, curly, and coily hair. There is actually a stylist who does the Amplified/Cut It kinky cutting style. No, I do not go to a stylist. I cut my own and I don't wear my hair straight so it isn't a problem.

Hey K! Any suggestions for hair that is shedding badly? My hair was flourishing then about 8 months ago started going downhill. My diet, vitamins eating habits have stayed the same. I haven’t used heat and it’s still falling out. I honestly think I’m gonna need to chop most of it off and start new. Not sure if you have any additional ideas 💜

If you are shedding far outside of what is normal, it’s time to schedule a Dr’s appointment. Excess shedding is usually indicative of something going on internally.

It could be an iron or vitamin d or any other vitamin deficiency or something else internally like Kayla said. I haven't done a black tea rinse in years but when my hair was shedding excessively I did a few of these black tea rinses and surprisingly it did help. Good luck!

It could also just be seasonal shedding. I’m going through the same thing rn, except I’ve started taking vitamins, iron (I’m iron deficient) and drinking a ton more water and I’ve still been shedding like crazy. Sometimes hair sheds more during certain times of the year.
