This video didn't turn out how I was expecting! It was meant to be all about how I move my car whenever I move my narrowboat, but then I befriended a swan.
I've only recently discovered how to tell the difference between male and female swans. Males have a black bit at the base of their bill which swells and becomes larger during breeding season, so this was definitely a male swan.
Anyway, thanks again for watching!

You’re not different. You’re just introverted and that’s fine. The difference between introverts and extroverts is about how people recharge themselves. One likes their own space, the other needs to be around people. Both types have strengths and both have weaknesses. Despite it being implied otherwise in popular opinion there’s nothing wrong with being an introvert.

I don't consider myself to be an introvert, I just don't like people. It's the solitude of boating (of any kind) that draws me to it.

Hi Betty … please try not to feel “exposed” or folk watching you… you’re very brave to be a boat owner and I assume a live aboard, most people that “Gongoozle” are just curious and some even envious so just to say be proud of yourself and what you’re doing. It’s a massive learning curve and I can assure you your confidence will grow to new levels, even after 24 years as a continuous cruiser I still get slightly “self aware” if at busy locks with public watching.. it’s just being human.. good luck and stay safe 😊

Hello Betty ☺. I could feel your anxiety at the beginner before you even said anything. Don't be intimidated, you go girl. Swans can't get into the air from the water without difficulty! They need a solid runway ... He/she is probably a younger swan or its lost its partner, they mate for life and don't usually mate again, sadly. I lost my beloved husband back in December, afterc54 years together, so I know how that feels 😢. Don't feed them bread, they cant digest it. Rice and oats are ok though. Be careful too, they can be quite aggresive. The geese probably had young near by and was chasing it away. Lots of mythology connected to swans, coud now be your toten animal. Sending love, light and summer blessings 🌻🌺🌼🌾 xx

Those interactions you have with people on their boats and the towpath really add to the vlog and so many people are 'vlogging' these days I'd try not to feel embarrassed talking to the camera with other people about. Although I do relate to how you feel when the crowds disperse - that's the main reason I get out on my bike, getting away from the crowds and exploring country lanes and towpaths are fabulous for that. There are 500 comments already so I doubt you'll read this. I have agoraphobia, and hate going out. I felt everyone is watching me, judging me, secretly laughing at me. But I am feeling more comfortable going out nowadays compared to a few years ago, since I've come to realise that actually no-one cares. They might glance at you, but most people will barely see you and they just want to get on with their day. So I've come to the conclusion most of my worries are internal. I love your videos by the way. You are so honest and real, nothing pretentious, no gimmicks, and you are very engaging. I love boats and it's very interesting to see your way of life and the stuff you have to deal with. I think you're very brave and amazing to give us a glimpse of it on KZbin.

great comment, i was often told my gaze was intimidating. but as i timidly looked at people i was usually thinking things like "if i made my sandwiches for work the night before would i have more motivation to go to a very dull job ? or things like; my left shoe lace is tighter that the left. all the while other people would give me a sideways look worrying about me , when i was actually thinking about what brand of dog food to buy tomorrow at the supermarket ? what's French for dog food ? where did the word food originate from ? you are so right, no one cares. evryone is so wrapped up in their own bubble. even the swan,

I do read all of the comments eventually but it takes me a while depending on what else I'm doing! I know what you mean about worrying that people are judging you as I worry about this too. I had bad acne as a child and I remember some girls in a shop who were talking about me and laughing at me, and other kids at school would make comments about my skin, so I wonder if that's partly where it comes from. I think all insecurities must come from somewhere?

The waters draw a diverse range of people. Some of the boaters, walkers, and others gravitate to the canals, finding solace in a space when they aren't necessarily at ease in mainstream. The egoless approach to your videos makes them a pleasure and a privilege to watch. Your empathy is compelling, and while you might find it taken advantage of on occasions, it can also lead to encounters with some amazing like minded people and wonderful experiences along the waterways. I agree, except for the word "envy". Envy connotes a feeling of resentfulness, or a desire to take something away from someone. I think these people were happy to see her, and maybe wished they could experience what she was experiencing. We really need a better word to describe that positive feeling. That feeling of seeing someone else having a good time and wanting the same. Not at their expense, but alongside them.

Hi Betty. One thing that you might find useful for being a Solo Narrowboater is what I like to call a Lock Pole,we all know that some of the gates can be extremely difficult and heavy to move but if you have yourself a old fashioned Oar ( nice and chunky solid wood with a thick blade ) you can use this to move the lock gate with ease, use the blade on the Many Foot bricks that the CRT has put in place and use the Oar to help lever the Lock gate. Originally the Lock gates would have holes in the ground and a saddle attachment on the end of the Lock gate and you would use a Stout pole in the ground hole and the pole in the saddle attachment but because of modernisation most of these were removed and replaced with the Brick Steps !. It must be a Good Strong Stout Wooden Oar though because obviously the Newer ones are just not up for the job !. Keep your eyes open for one that you feel comfortable with and they also come in handy for other things as well :- In case of breakdown, using to fend other boats away and chasing Vandals away Lol 😂 ( not a laughing matter when you are on your own but when faced with a angry owner armed with a Big Oar the Kids do tend to Leg it 🤷‍♂️ ). The Oar is easily stored on top of your Boat in the Boat hook rack and is always close to hand 🤷‍♂️. It’s surprising what uses you find for them when you do have one. Great Video ❤ Think you are Lovely 😻

I looked at a narrowboat last year but didn’t go ahead. This issue was always at the back of my mind. I came to the conclusion a folding bike was the answer so I could cycle along the towpath, fold the bike and stick it in the car then drive back to the boat. Walking is great exercise though! Good on ya!

I really enjoy the walking! I think some boaters don't enjoy it though as they give lifts to each other. I remember telling another boater I was walking six miles back to my car and he thought I was mad.

This swan is probably a "yearling" and has not found a mate yet thus lacking purpose in life, as it really should have been partnered up and nesting while going as mental as those ducks whenever anyone comes half-close to their chicks. They may act a bit weird since lacking a "job", but it is quite normal. Thank you for having restored my inner peace yet again, from a fellow introvert.

Hi, I'd love to know some of the back-story that led to you getting a barge. My dad was a bargee, taking coal from Leeds to Liverpool. He always looked back on that time with real fondness and it was his freedom and joy when he was younger. That idyll that shone from him planted a seed. But, it is just seems too bonkers to me how I just cast it all away and experience it.

I agree about keeping the diesel topped up to avoid contamination. I put my engine hours into a spreadsheet then look to fill up when it says I'm below 50%. So far, I've only used marinas that have service moorings on the canal to save all that manoeuvring around the basin. Also I avoid filling up when it's raining so as rainwater doesn't get in the tank.

Hi Betty, I have just discovered your channel, now I have watched all of your videos and I think they are extremely comforting to watch. I guessed that accent from the beginning, I am also a local to Wolvo. There is some history to why you are doing what you are doing, and it's not for sharing I don't think. You are doing great with your videos, occasionally shying away from the public is good, you deal with everything your way hun. I am jealous because the canals and waterways are so idyllic and relaxing but my finances won't yet stretch to a boat, in the meantime Betty, please keep churning out those videos and thank you.
