I think you DRASTICALLY misunderstand the BIG difference between Genshin and Honkai. Honkai is a turn based RPG so the big battles are all cutscenes while the world building is done via playing. Genshin is an open world so most of the battles are real time via the player fighting the bosses. So there's not really many boss battle cutscenes. The cutscenes in Genshin are more build ups TO the boss battles or big juicy lore drops and world building. Comparing Genshin to Honkai is like trying to compare an apple to a banana. Entirely different fruit Edit: clarifying because i know you also fight the bosses in Honkai but ny point is that the final smackdown is always a cutscene. Genshin doesn't have that because it's an open world so we move around freely.

1:06:01 “Boring” Look, I know you’re just watching the cutscenes without having played the game itself, so you’re missing the emotional connection, but like… You have to realize that yourself. This scene is literally the emotional climax of the entire arc. It’s also where the main problem of the arc gets resolved. The culmination of all of the characters efforts throughout Sumeru was in order to make it to this point. It’s not fair to call it “boring” just because it’s not as easy to understand as a flashy fight sequence.
@_Nyxus_3 ай бұрын
I really dislike a lot of his reactions because he's expecting massive fight scenes when Genshin really doesn't need just fight scenes. It's not a shounen anime, it's a full on story. He's also comparing it a lot to HSR when 1, they're very different games and 2, Genshin is much older. I get more information from film maker react videos because he breaks down the work that goes into these animations and WHY they work, rather than someone just wanting action scenes all the time without context as to why they're important and impactful.
@Stuffcomicss4 ай бұрын
Flashy animations are cool and all, but they’re not always the best thing. Sometimes they just make stuff hard to see or get annoying after a while. Genshin Impact’s animations aren’t too crazy, but they’re smooth and fit the game’s vibe perfectly. They make the game fun without trying too hard, and honestly, that’s what makes it great.

The whole point is to play the game, understand the lore and then acompany that with the animation because for obvious reasons the animation alone is not gonna do much for you since its not meant for ppl that don't know the game and to watch it like a movie. Also HSR came way after genshin, my guy was watching animations from 4 years ago when they didn't have enough budget and thinks its a great idea to compare it to another game thats more recent and had a bigger budget to start with.

Genshin is quite old. Honkai Impact 3rd is older, but Genshin really got Hoyo their budget to create much higher quality animations in the future. It’s why many of the beginning animations aren’t as strong. Star Rail is only a little more than a year old, so it’s obvious the animations are far better overall. As for Genshin, the art style is more akin to a cartoonized anime, for younger audiences, so it makes sense that it doesn’t pop as much as a game like HI3rd would, whose audience is mostly teen or up in material. The thing is, despite Genshin’s animations overall not being as strong as their other games, the sheer amount of actual in-game animations, cutscenes, and emotional stories is far higher. All the animations that were shown here, are merely just the main story quest of Genshin, which doesn’t even account for half of the amount of animation in the game overall. If you were to see EVERY cutscene and animation in the game, from past events, side quests, and character quests, you’d have a video lasting over 24 hours long. That’s the sheer scope of how much animation actually exists, or existed, in the game. So much so, they can’t even keep the events in the game itself because the game file would take too much data to hold. I may not play Genshin anymore, but as someone who once did, I have to respect the amount of storytelling and world building they were able to incorporate into the game. You wouldn’t believe just how many smaller stories there are here, and the amount of hours you could spend in the game just listening to stories would tally up to thousands of hours, all telling small parts of how the world works and every NPC that lives in it.

And I think the cutscenes are pretty consistent with the game quality. But here's the thing, he was only judging the 3D animation, I'd say that the most *special* cutscenes tend to be in 2D. Oh, yeah, I think another thing that may cause his experience to be somewhat lacking is that it's ONLY the cutscenes he is viewing, a lot of the story happens through gameplay. There are side quests and world quests that are hidden everywhere that lead to full story lnes with voice acting and animation, and it is just so much. Not to mention you get one or even two fully aimated cutscenes for each character story quest other than maybe the 1.0 quests which were more minimalist.

........ 36:20 Actually, Azhdaha is an oriental dragon but unlike the serpent type seen commonly used by emperors of China, it is based on a version from the Pre-Han dynasties (at least 2000 years ago) with the shape similar to crocodiles (think of it like a ankylosaur with magical powers ehe :p). This type of dragon isn't well written on the internet unless you go on Baidu, but there many archaeological records on it if you search in-depth enough. Also, dragons in at least oriental regions do not require wings to fly (like Zhongli's dragon form which is possibly based on the serpent form mixed with some aspects of the Qilin). To be fair, using the term 'dragon' on oriental dragons/龍 Long, is just because their aspects are similar and allow simpler translation but as a matter of fact, Western dragons in mythology are mostly (and I mean mostly, not all are) evil or at least villains in myths, while although there are evil dragons in Chinese mythology, most are considered good and kind-hearted and are symbols of prosperity, auspicious, the emperor and their mandate of Heaven, etc. Just wanted to point out cuz cultural background is something to take note as it has resulted in many mistakes which has resulted in drama across the internet due to "Racism", "Sexism" or some other dumb reasons.

She also has ice powers, so she was preparing to freeze the wave. (Her gameplay is she shoots aoe ice at enemies) Shenhe, who ended up freezing the wave 1st, was a human who was trained and raised by an adeptus. So, from what we know, Ganyu (the bow user) would canonically have an easier time freezing the wave than her. But since she's a 3000+ yr old half adeptus, her stepping in and being the one to freeze the wave would basically mean the pure humans failed to protect themselves. She's like a last line of defense and a big "YOU FAILED" button for that particular fight Actually, fun fact, there is a secret 3rd cryo user ready to step in if things got dire. Since you mentioned it so many times I would also like to give my take on it. There's a very obvious difference in cutscene mostly due to what those cutscene's show. Honkai impact cutscene mostly are used to show the scale and add to the context of a situation or conclusion of what you do/did upto the story. Honkai cutscenes also have an advantage due to the story almost everytime being in a do or die situation, with those high stakes situations Genshin's style of animation just wouldn't work for it. Star Rail's animation in turn focuses on specific characters to emphasize that characters stride and personality. Genshin doesn't follow these types it's cutscenes are mostly there to emphasize a particular moment within the story instead of telling a story by themselves. These simple elegant cutscene hold alot of not exactly references but things that you wouldn't catch on without knowing the story like for example the dude that fell out of the robot tearing through all the pipe thingy that were attached to him basically symbolising a string puppet (which he is not a literal string one but puppet still) snapping it's own strings and it's clear even as he is falling he's completely motionless same as if you drop something like a doll from high ground. Or the girl would got guillotined, right after it falls you see the hat rolling because of Furina's bow. It works both as saying the end of the dance and her head rolling The length of the cutscenes also plays a factor they have to keep them not too big or the storage of devices would explode. Just look at Zzz it's in it's first run patch and it's already almost as big as Genshin (storagewise) "What's the deal with the water" in story basically you touch that water you go poof literally Speaking of which you should checkout ZZZ's animations they're insanely good

In the Genshin there are several animations in a month, and you may have noticed that they alternate 3d animation with live2d+ recently often in quests characters started to use usual 2d. They also recently created a team for the production of Animated short , you already saw "The Song Burning in the Embers", it’s their production, and they managed to release "the road not taken" (which you can see by the way). So for example, MIhoyo anime studio has never worked on genshin. And saying about the difficulties, it seems to be true because Honkai 3d no longer produces such animated shorts.

Yes, there is also the fact that Genshin began development shortly after Honkai Impact came out, so its graphics engine is not as improved as Star Rail, which allows them to experiment more, even so they have done well with what they have, now Honkai Impact has gone a long time without releasing animations of that caliber and the animations they make in game show how old the graphics engine is, i swear the only mistake of Genshin was to come out as the first big game of the company, if it had come out later it would have animations and fluidity at the level of zzz, but anyway with Natlan you can see that they are making the most of their engine and the graphical improvements that they are going to implement

Since being in the community from so long and hearing things through rumors and such, mihoyo had a p good gameplan, where they basically branch out into genres/styles and spice things up! Love that people are backing up the game, i have played both genshin and hsr and i love both and invest in both, playing all the story, getting all the characters. Genshin is a masterpiece of a story the cutscenes are there to give a little extra to what we play through, not the story itself, genshin has an extremely long and filled-with-lore story but it is only accesible to you by playing through it, i have explained hsr story to friends by showing them a cutscene and being like "this is a student and his master that went mad fighting" (jing yuan and jingliu) and it is possible/easy to give them context, genshin's story is so vast i can't even explain half of it without missing important information. Don't pretend you can judge the "visual" addition to the story without knowing the story itself. They're the extra they put in to give a small part of the story a more epic aproach. "they're mid", they're just part of the NOT mid story. Unlike hsr that feels more like a movie with turn based combat, genshin's cutscenes ARE NOT this game's focus, hsr is all about beautiful cutscenes ( i love them ) not genshin

Whoa i knew this was ass when he immediately compared the opening cutscene to HSR. Genshin came our 3 years before and actually HSR took some of its inspo from genshin. Genshin being an open world game with about 40 characters (as of 5.0) they focus more on the worldbuilding and the characters within the world. The game also is HEAVY on its story. The open world is fun and so are the events but without the main story genshin has nothing to hold it all together. Just because there is no fighting its because its trying to tell important lore to the story - like Nahida hugging Rukkadavata was a very depressing moment in the story with all the context - to keep people into it. And to top it all off genshin isnt all about fighting. As much as we like flashy character animations, we love a well animated cutscene to full express how importent the scene is. The whole reaason these cutscene are important isnto really tie in the situation, whether its fun or serious. I just HATE the comparison to HSR this and HSR that

tbf Star Rail came out years after Genshin, so you are seeing Genshin's "weaker" animations but also, I just think that each team went with a different style of story telling. Genshin's is much slower I think. Honkai Impact 3rd is even older than Genshin, so I think they went with more animation as the cheaper option to mocap at the time. Genshin getting so big meant that it could then add mocap to their roster for in game. Genshin's character trailers and other side videos would probably be more interesting for you since they have more actual hand drawn animation and stuff than in game.

First of all, hsr came after Genshin and they're both two completely different things (this is coming from someone who played and completed the main story in both games). Hsr is newer so it's obviously going to have upgraded animations compared to Genshin 1.0 cutscenes so I don't know what you were on about there. Secondly, Geshin is an open world game so most of the boss battles are done by the players themselves and the cutscenes only show how the battle ends, not the entire thing. Meanwhile hsr is a turn based game which has the players defeat the boss then gives what's basically a small summary of how the battle would have gone if it was animated and other things related to the battle (Like how Acheron stepped in and sent Aventurine to that domain place that she can do, I can't really describe it and I don't have good english). Thirdly, Genshin and hsr are completely different based on where the story takes place. Hsr story is taken on many different planets so of course there's gonna be something new each time in animations and vibes while Genshin is limited to only one world with seven nations but it still does amazingly well on showcasing how different the seven nations are, but it's still not very fair or reasonable to compare two completely different games.

@jliaww8564 ай бұрын
I really like how informative you got with the 3d animation techniques in this video. It's rare to see someone pay such close attention to small scenes and see how much detail and thought is put into it. The stuff about the dragons, however, is factually incorrect given that genshin is not a western game. Many of the designs hoyoverse has for dragons will be far from the stereotypical western design of the dragon. Azhdaha is a dragon, despite not having wings. I wonder how you would react to seeing apep. Also, there seems to be a lot of comments disagreeing with you about the animation in HSR being better than that of genshins. I like how respectful you were about it in the video while mentioning it. There are much more flashy action scenes and are probably much more impressive on a technical level, so it's easy to understand why someone who watches them without any context would prefer the HSR story animations compared to the genshin ones. However, genshin focuses a lot more on the emotional impact of their cutscenes, and i feel a lot of the time they fall flat in HSR. Also, a lot of the better action cutscenes would not have been in that video, as they are part of story or event quests instead of the main quest. I know the 2.3 Albedo cutscene was very widely loved in the community as an action scene when it came out, same with the Itto sq cutscene during the same patch. A newer one I quite liked was the battle between Sethos and Cyno, which has very good fighting choreography. I honestly prefer genshins cutscenes much more because I think they add so much more to the story than HSR, which feel like they're more flashy just to impress the viewer in a short amount of time rather than deliver a huge emotional impact. Also I think you would call the cutscenes I like in HSR mid too, for the same reason (not enough action, more story based). I can't say anything for honkai impact, since i haven't played, though from what I've seen the action/combat scenes are very exciting and well animated. I recommend you watch ZZZ animations from hyv as well, given your opinions expressed throughout the video, I think you would enjoy them. While I hope genshin adds more action scenes with the same criticism you used, I would be perfectly happy if they don't change what they've already been doing, given how much I already enjoy what both the 3d animation cutscenes and the storybook scenes add to the story.

36:45 But Retuo/Azhdaha *is* a dragon. Unlike the European variant, Chinese dragons don't have wings. You can refer to Rex Lapis' Exuvia, who may not have wings, but is irrefutably a Chinese dragon. Similarly, Retuo is a geo-elemental dragon.

Thanks for giving the review on technical aspect, because of this I have learn some animation technique. I have some disagreement with the thought of HSR cutscene being better than Genshin. While HSR have more great use on VFX with realistic effects, I personally prefer Genshin more for its great use of closeup shot that always follow subject body and hand movement which is always fast paced and more dynamic. Meanwhile in HSR, the only cutscene I think is amazing when it comes action and individual combat animation is the battle between Sam and Firefly, other than that you can only see the same quality or better through character demo or short non-in-game animation. But even that said, most of HSR combat cutscene is done with fixed camera angle and minimal camera movement. Also to add, Genshin cutscene VFX might not as fancy as HSR, but it's also more consistent and immersive as it looks so much more like in game. If I can put tag for this two game cutscene style, I would put "Creative" for HSR and "Action" for Genshin.

hsr (and hi3) definitely has more eye catching cutscenes but honestly its more because of their modern/futuristic space theme art style, theyre able to go all out and it doesnt seem out of place. genshin is more bound onto reality, obviously still far from it, but theres "limits" here and there. you think these are mostly boring cause they focus on their story and meaning rather than their shock factor, its also why id rather watch someones entire playthrough with their reactions to these instead of someone purely watching just cutscenes without prior knowledge, but you are an animator, best scenes to critique their animation are usually fighting scenes, especially in this style, i suppose, so i understand the want to see the fighting scenes more at the very least. obviously preference is a factor as well but for me, as someone whos played hsr and genshin, i prefers hsrs entire style, but genshin's cutscenes are better in my opinion theres also a bunch of missing cutscenes from that video, mainly because they arent part of the main story, such as limited event cutscenes and character story quest cutscenes which has some of my favorite cutscenes, plus the videos exclusively on their social media accounts. to add on to the "lack" of 2d cutscenes, theyre found in the stuff just mentioned. there are even cutscenes from smaller and less significant quests and i think the video may have even cut out a good chunk of cutscenes from the main story as well.

There are clear creative differences between Honkai games and Genshin Impact. The obvious one being how Genshin is an active Exploration based game compared to linear, more flashy storytelling based style of Honkai. A lot of things are done as a gameplay element instead of pre-rendered cutscenes in Genshin Impact. HI3 creates Crazy good cinematics that Genshin ones aren't even comparable . But that is also because of how limited the gameplay in Honkai Impact 3rd is. It doesn't have the open-world exploration baked into the story. Genshin can do it so they do it a lot. Ultimately, the purpose is story telling and for the world of Teyvat, Genshin's "less flashy pre-rendered Fights , more gameplay elements" approach works better. A lot more fights where we are involved instead of just watching it. Also, Genshin story is a little more about mystery and personal Drama and they use animations to emphasize that side. There is no all-out war or constant fighting happening in Genshin (on the surface at least). Also, HI3 have a much easier way to emotionally invest you in the characters because the cast is small. Genshin has a huge cast so they use animations as a tool to invest us emotionally and into the characters, instead of using it to showcase flashy animation. As you play the game, you will actually appreciate this choice from the developers. It wasn't always like that, Genshin also started by animating action. And it was difficult to emotionally invest in early stories.

Honkai is a turn-based rpg so fight animations are almost included vs Genshin’s scenes are the build-up for a fight because its open world. Genshin’s cutscenes are well-thought of and beautifully animated but this dude only cares about the fight scenes and not the emotional or symbolistic part of a cutscene. Dragon comes from the Greek word for Snake, so you are wrong, and all the people who think that Dragons are one specific thing, are wrong. Anything that is derivative of a snake and is related to an ancient power (ancient not necessarily in time, but on the forces of the beginning of the world or life), is a Dragon. Any universe can name a dragon to anything that relates to that. You will be right if in that world they would have different names for different representations of that concept, like what people have made when mixed the word with its primal meaning. The theory of the mythology that created Dragons in different cultures is based on the discovery of fossils in different places in the world, mostly of dinosaurs, that spread the notion of beings like Dragons. The fact that they may only discover the head and the spinal column may explain why the serpent like body is present in all cultures.
