I went deaf for about 2 months from a severe ear infection from swimming in a lake, doctors didn't think I would get my hearing back at all, and overnight my world went silent. i’m two years late but: thank you for this. i just started working my first job at dunkin’ donuts and we have two regular deaf customers. i only could sign “have a good day” to one this morning and felt bad she wasn’t able to receive the same hospitality everyone did just because she couldn’t hear. i hope next time they come in i’m able to sign to them!

hi! i live in nova, close to dc, and i got to visit the signing starbucks with my friends and family a couple times! i always have to order for them or they have to write their order, but its a super fun experience knowing that i'm effectively communicating with another community! everytime i've been the baristas are nothing but exceptionally nice, and the only sign i messed up on was whipped cream my first time going, and the barista making my drink understood and corrected me. anyone that lives close and knows or is learning asl, i'd highly recommend it!

Your videos are amazing! I am not completely deaf, but I am hearing impaired. I have 95% hearing loss in my left ear and 20% in my right ear. I had been accepted into a school for the hearing impaired but unfortunately the school shut down before I could attend. So I have decided to learn ASL on my own. ASLMeredith I do feel like I have come a long way just in the couple of weeks I’ve been learning. My goal is to efficiently speak ASL almost as second nature. I talk with my hands often so I figured learning ASL would be a very useful. I do eventually want to take actual classes or virtual classes for more one on one and someone can correct my mistakes if I make them. I don’t run into hearing impaired people often, but I want to speak it proficiently just in case.

Love it! I am from Puerto Rico, so coffee is very normal. If I may: the sign for coffee using both fist is a simulation of the act of grind the coffee seeds. Many old people were used to buy the seeds and grind them themselves at home to get coffee. You can say that as a reference to help older students or many from Latin America. 👋🏻☕️ CIAO!

I lived in Seattle in the 1980s when Starbucks was still new. The other one, SBC (Seattle Best Coffee), was at that time named Stewart Brothers Coffee. They renamed themselves when they became a franchise. In 1979, I lived in Moulins France for a while. As you know, LSF (French Sign Language) influenced ASL way back through Laurent Clerc. In France, seeing coffee made in the home with a small box grinder, I easily understood why we sign coffee the way we do. Being from the west coast and learning ASL in Seattle (I have a progressive deafness), I learned to sign TEA differently so as to distinguish it from VOTE. I sign tea with a < > motion.

ASLMeredith I am a Kindergarten teacher in Brazil, in my university it requires sign language as a mandatory subject but before becoming mandatory I look for before before notice that I am a hard hearing, I mean I knew it that I wasn’t listening but I thought at that moment that was normal. I work at Panera Bread in the pandemic and I have a deaf customer who is pretty regular. I almost messed up his order because I didn't have enough time to look at the order on his phone and all i know is the alphabet and "thank you" "sorry" "please" "okay" and "again". Hi Meredith! I love how you sign. Could you explain a bit what the mouth has to do when signing? For example, you always move your jaw downwards slightly when you say "coffee". It's subtle, but you do it every time so I'm wondering if there's any significance to it. Same with "popular" and "Starbucks" you start to say it, but it looks like you're just mouthing the word "pop" and the "s" sounds in Starbucks

Hi Julius! Great question. A few answers to different parts of your question: (1) Regarding the jaw lowering you mentioned when showing some signs - this is a slight head nod that's generally used to indicate an affirmative statement. I naturally do it when teaching a sign, because I'm affirming: "This is the sign". (2) Mouthing the word - Many signers use some English-influenced mouth movements while signing. This is true of both deaf and hearing signers, though I see it much less in people who came from fully Deaf families. It's important to note I'm NOT speaking the words aloud or intentionally mouthing any word in full. What happens is a more subtle partial mouthing, like you said - it's not the whole word, but maybe just the first sound or a portion of the word. No need to try to copy this, but also no need to fully rid yourself of it if you do it naturally, too. (3) All that said, there ARE other mouth movements that are specific to ASL and convey meaningful information. (Linguistically, this makes them "morphemes", if you're curious :) units of language that may not be a "word" themselves, but do coney meaning.) For example, the tongue sticking out could indicate that some action was done in a lazy/careless manner, or could be part of a specific sign (eg: the sign NOT-YET requires the tongue out slightly. Without the tongue, the sign changes to mean LATE). In general, all those ASL non-sign parts of the language are called "Non-manual signals" (NMS) and any ASL course you take should certainly include this instruction. Good question! Yes-No questions are eyebrows up, while wh-word questions (or any open-ended questions) are typically eyebrows furrowed. Oops! I think I’ve been using the “sell” sign wrong. I thought that singular “store” movement meant to shop, (the verb). Can that sign be used to mean both sell and to shop? If not, what is the proper sign for shop (verb)?

Great question! Right - STORE (or "shop" the noun) has a duplicate movement, SELL is like STORE but with a singular movement. SHOP as a verb is a different sign altogether.
