I haven't taken to the trees yet for bow hunting. I've been doing ground hunting. #1 is your movement and sound. Ive had deer walk within feet of me with no scent control and a full solid orange suit on because I held still. When they get that close you cannot draw your bow without spooking them. Find some cover to immerse your self in, that still allows enough of an open path for your arrow to fly to a space where you think deer may cross. If you walked into an unknown spot during dark, at around 10am, start trimming some twigs and clearing the area so you can draw and shoot without any interference and try again that night or the next morning. when in cover, be mindful of the hole through the branches you are shooting through. I was drawn and aiming at a deer through an opening between slanted branches and because my arrow sat lower than my sites, my arrow skipped off a branch and shot over the deer. The range limitation is not what makes bow hunting more difficult than rifle hunting for me. Its that with a bow, you have to be able to draw, without interference from your surroundings and without spooking the deer. That is the hardest part, to me anyways. Once in your stationary hunting position, make all your movements slow, think like the speed of movement of lava flowing. If you can, only move or draw when the deer has it's head down. Prepare your shooting lanes so you are taking at least 20 yard shots, any closer and it's almost impossible to draw without spooking a deer. Colors and camo don't matter as much as movement and light reflection. your pale face shines like a beaken. get a camo or solid brownish face mask to cover up your face or even camo/dark makeup. Bucks are smarter and scent/wind should be #1 thought when hunting them, but if your fine with a doe for meat, the wind is not as important for smell as it is in covering up your noise. Wind is so much easier to hunt in because you can move a lot easier without spooking the deer. The wind covers up a lot of your crunching and scraping noise and moves all the vegetation around you so it's harder for a deer to pick out your movement vs everything else blowing in the wind. Once the prime hunting time in the morning is up, don't be afraid to explore the area to figure out where the heaviest deer trails are and bedding spots are. You can learn where the deer are, where they move and know exactly where to position your self the next time you go out. You can invade a deer's area 1 day and expect them to be there the next morning. If they know your there 2 days though, then leave that spot alone for at least 3 days to let them comfortable there again. If you get out there earlier than other hunters, you may have some shots wrecked by hunters coming in, but you will learn a lot about the movement of deer in that area. Sometimes other hunters coming in is just what you need to get the deer moving and can actually help you. I sat about 30min before dusk and some hunters strolled down the main trail out of the woods, probably after not seeing much, and they got in their cars and left. About 5-10min later a deer came walking down the same trail after them, as if the deer was hunkered down in the woods just waiting for them to leave. Make less movement than your hunting competition and the deer will be paying attention to them instead of you.

I grew up hunting all season every season with my uncle. When I got married he and my husband (who was a fisherman but no hunter by any means) didn’t get along. When I get to my spot I will range certain landmarks so I have an idea of what a deer will be at based off what landmark they are by

Since I lost my hunting buddy I haven’t been hunting in a long time now. But when I did bow hunt I used a pendulum site it took all the guess work out, I would be pretty much dead on from 0 to 30 yards no range finder or getting on the wrong pin. It doesn’t seem like I hear or read much about the pendulum site anymore.

buddy of mine once told me.. always treat deer hunting as if the deer have a gun, too. I didn't understand what he meant. one day, I was packing it up for the day after a full day of nothing, moved my pop up blind about 100 yards and since I needed 2 hands, left my gun behind to move the blind over. as I'm staking it in, I hear a doe walking right behind me about 30m away. she had no idea I was there but my gun was 100 yards away. completely blew it. I then understood what my buddy meant. if I behaved as though the deer were armed, I would have kept my gun on me no matter what.

Great quality content. I'm a complete beginner bow-hunter. Just bought my first Compound Bow & Broadhead arrows second-hand for $100. Had my first session today with a target. I learned fast. drawing at the wrong time. deer will see you even if you move slow and have great camo. draw when eyes are not looking your direction. preferably when they look away or making noise themselves and not looking towards you.

This is my first year hunting. I'm self taught as well. I am stuck hunting public land so I don't have any requirements on deer size except what my provinces regulations state. I have a buck tag this year and the only requirement is that it has to have at least 3" of antler to be considered a buck. Another mistake I didn't hear was movement. Being very still and minimizing movement is key. You can have your scent control on point, you can play the wind perfectly, but if you are moving too much those things won't matter. I'm still yet to fill my tag but I have until Dec 31 when season here ends. Research goes a long way as well. I've done plenty of reading before I even got my hunting license.

I’m sure you have answered this question a thousand times but I hunt from a tree climber and yes I use scent control products and judging the wind isn’t really a issue but when hunting state game lands how is the best way to figure out getting to the spot you want to hunt without being detected by the deer

It’s kind of a hard question to answer because there are a lot of variables. First thing is to figure out where the deer are likely to be when you’re trying to get to your stand. Then find a route that will take you and your scent away from that area. Look for routes that keep low, like creek beds. Sometimes an indirect path is your best option.

worst thing about public lands is you can't have your own spot out there and leave a blind or a stand up without taking the chance someone will steal it. maybe scouting multiple locations at different angles? I haven't had any public land success but it seems to make sense to me. have a location that would work for a north wind, a different one for a south wind, etc.

For those who aren't tree stand hunters, invest in decent glassing equipment, it'll save you miles of hiking and give you the edge in seeing them first before they see you, don't be too eager to glass around as fast as you can looking for deer, I can't fathom the hundreds of deer I probably glassed over and never realized they were there, take your time!

Yes I have. I once hit a doe in the shoulder and could not find her. I could tell it was bad by the extremely loud "thwack" sound when it hit, and pretty much the entire arrow sticking out. Barely any penetration. The only way to deal with something like that is to make sure you do everything you can to recover a poorly shot deer, or that it survived. You can practice and practice but sometimes bad things happen. If anyone ever tells you they haven't taken a bad shot they're probably lying.

The most technical part is the actual shot so without shooting you’re missing out on a lot. However simply drawing your bow and holding it back is one thing you can do to strengthen your back. You can also draw from various positions you might be in when you’re actually hunting. Others may have some ideas.
