Biggest mistake: apply LUTs before colour correction!
@katlis5 жыл бұрын
At 3:45 Matti mentions he basically edits "incorrectly" to compensate for the variation in what he's seeing in his editor, versus what he's seeing rendered in his browser. This sounds like a clear misunderstanding of color space, and the true "beginner color grading mistake."
@Milan-cf1xe5 жыл бұрын
Hey, I have a question. So if I shoot in slog and I want to use a lut made for slog. How can I color correct the footage before applying the lut? Because in slog you cant really tell if the temperature or saturation is right?
@BBSHOCKZ5 жыл бұрын
LUTs are destructive, tweak your footage. Adjust your shadows and highlights mid tones etc correct your colours before applying your lut
@Houstnwehavuhoh5 жыл бұрын
@@Milan-cf1xe You should find a CORRECTIVE/INPUT LUT that converts SLOG2/3 to REC709 (or LOG to REC709). OR, adjust appropriately to what is considered the standard for exposures (Sony has corrective LUTs on their site, and there's a ton of free ones). What I mean by this is the Ansel Adams chart. Basically, adjust shadows, mid-tones, highlights to their "appropriate" spots (exposures) according to this chart (with respects to content). Usually that's a bit tricky considering how flat SLOG is (lots of tweaking), but, a basic understanding of the idea and practice will get you there (tons of tutorials, just don't COPY, understand the fundamentals and use your eyes!!!). If you use a corrective/input LUT that converts to a standardized color space (such as REC709), it's substantially easier. And to clarify, REC709 is not lower quality or a smaller color space by any means (I mean actually it is a smaller color space but..), converting from LOG to REC is "condensing" information into an "acceptable" colorspace, allowing you to take advantage of dynamic range and the color space used when shot (assuming it's a large space such as SGamut/SGamut.cine/etc). Your question proposes that you're using a LUT specific to SLOG that maybe gives you a "finished look"? If it's a corrective/Input LUT, that usually means it's converting to REC709. From there, adjust everything appropriately to make it look "presentable/good" without a color/contrast shift. Make it look good to your eyes (exposures, contrast, saturation! Even if it means the shadows aren't blue, and highlights are golden. It should look how your eyes saw it. If it's a LOG lut that isn't specific to a color space, that means it's creating a curve "appropriate" to LOG, but applying contrast/shifts/sat/colors that the LUT was "intended for". Basically creating a "look" so to speak. Usually this is harder to "correct", as it's a canned look, and was created around the content of the creator. Meaning, your shots are likely quite different. From here, though, if that's the path you choose, dial in the LUT as it seems closest to correct, then adjust exposures, contrast, saturation as appropriate (Asnel Adams, get used to it). The big thing to understand though is, if it's a "Final look" LUT, or a LUT someone sold you that "makes color grading easy", you'll have to tweak. Meaning, as you dial in that "magical LUT", even if shadows/mids/highlights are where they're supposed to sit, the color shifts may not be what was desired. Or vice versa, colors are there but everything else isn't. You may get the desired color shifts, but not the correct exposures, leaving you "somewhat pleased". Point is, it's ideal to convert LOG to REC709 (by LUT or by eye), then apply the creative look. There's ways to work with drastic creative LUTS but bear in mind it's tricky, I realize this may be a bit of a ramble but I hope you can make sense of it!

A bit of thinking out loud: A LUT will influence the Contrast, Exposure and of course the colours. When someones creates a LUT, it is to give a specific look on the footage, but we most probably don't know the Picture profile used, or under which lighting conditions someone has created the specific look, aka LUT. So why not to start with the LUT and come down to the look we like, tweaking the exposure and the rest of the settings? I understand if the original footage is way off, we should colour correct it before applying the LUT, so we can get the look that the specific LUT promises. But why not to do it the other way around? When I fix my contrast and exposure and then apply the LUT, it is too contrasty and the colours are all over the place. Why not to apply the LUT, and tweak the exposure and the contrast? And if we do not have full intensity of the LUT, we "miss" the real look of the LUT since the the colours are not shifted as they are supposed to. Hope that makes sense 🙂

I personally over saturate stills a lot more, and try to keep video natural and slightly darker. I feel with stills it is okay to push unnatural looks as it is more an art form, like a picture, bigger than real life, while video needs to look more real. I also like to check, once I have colour corrected, the before and after, as this brings you back to reality how far you have pushed things.

How's this for a pro-tip: use an input LUT on your log footage. A contrast and sat adjustment to your log footage is NOT a replacement for an input LUT. Log is not rec709. You have to use an input LUT to change it from the log colorspace to your standard rec709 colorspace. I see people make this mistake all the time on KZbin and it kills the heck out of me.

Aw, sweet, another Matti video. How long until he plugs in his LUTs? 1:40 Does he actually explain color grading as a process (with proper corrections beforehand, getting the color you want and then scope checking) or just a slider for LUTs? Nope, just the slider. And btw, as a tip: Saturation doesn't fix all your problems. It's the HUE vs SAT that fixes your problems. Bump up JUST the skin tones if you want to bump up your skin tones, duh...., Don't just Saturate the whole image... wtf... Even Vibrance is a better choice, but HUE vs SAT is the best option. So if you like re-learning, at least learn this. Cheers!
