►SCRIPT
When you start getting good in DJ’ing, you’ll often find yourself implementing the same techniques when mixing. And doing the same stuff, over and over again, can get pretty boring, pretty fast, not only for yourself but for the audience as well.
So, in this video, I’m gonna show you 3 mixing scenarios, where you can turn your basic transitions into better ones, using 3 advance mixing techniques.
Now, the purpose of teaching you these 3 advance techniques, is to hopefully give you more options when mixing songs together, to add more variety and excitement to your DJ sets.
Scenario #1 - Mixing House Songs together like a Beginner
So what you just saw was a clean and smooth transition.
We simply mixed in our next song which has a 32 beat intro onto the current songs chorus which goes for about thirty two beats as well.
Scenario #2 - Mixing Hip Hop Songs together like a Beginner
So the difference of this mix compared to the 1st basic mix example, is that here, we’re mixing at the outro section of the current song.
And though we’re trying to implement some smooth mixing. The keys of both songs are simply clashing.
And it’s unfortunate, because both songs have notable melody intros and outros. So what we want to do is highlight that, and smoothly mix at the same time.
So for this scenario. We’re going to implement an Acapella link up transition.
So we’re going to use an Acapellas to link both songs together.
So we’re going to mix the acapella at the outro section of the current song, then we’re going to echo out the current song away, load the next song, and cue that in, all while the acapella plays.
Then as the 2nd song reaches the end of its intro, we’ll simply echo out the acapella away.
Scenario #3 - Transitioning from another Genre to a Faster Genre
So what you just saw there was an example of scratch/cue dropping. And that semi basic technique works by echoing out the previous song away, and simply scratch/cue dropping the next song in.
This technique is an easy and effective way to shift genres and BPMs, but let’s take this transition up a notch, and make it sound smoother and cleaner.
So to do this more advanced transition, you’ll need to have the following settings.
Now, this more advanced transition requires the following settings:
1. Your first song assigned as the Master deck
2. Tempo fader settings set to wide
3. Sync activated on both decks
So the plan is, we’re going to mix the long intro section of the next song with the long outro section of the current song.
And at the same time, slowly bring the BPM of the current song up, to match the native BPM of the next song.
And don’t worry. Since both songs are in sync, the next song will simply follow, the current songs BPM movement.
Now once we reach the next song’s native BPM on the current song, we’ll simply echo out the previous song away, and await the end of the next songs’ intro.

The last transition is honestly the most useful overall for me personally. I often am mixing from 160bpm or so up to 180bpm which is about the difference in bpm of the 2 tracks in the example. I'll have to take it in step by step to make sure i have it down. but Thanks for the innovation. Like you said, there is a time and and place for these transitions, and when the moment calls for something special, its good to be able to reach into the ol' bag o tricks and pull out a stellar transition. Much appreciated sir!

Good advice! When I was in my teens, I was glued to my stereo listening to live dj mix blocks during the weekends on the radio. Back then (the '80s), our jaws would drop just by listening to a simple volume crossover during instrumental breaks on 12" singles. We have come a long way, indeed. However, I am wondering how much would these techniques would apply for what's called now a retro mix. I have recorded many mixes for Mixcloud, and have kept it quite "classical", following the simple crossover and occasional scratches, echoes, and sudden turntable brakes. I think more contemporary music needs updated mixing techniques. How wrong would it be working with the structure of 12" (instr. intro+verse+chorus+long break+chorus+outro instr.) and keeping it simple with the crossfades. Would nostalgic audiences like adding the techniques you showed here on classic tracks? would it be too elaborated for the pace at which we used to listen and dance in the clubs? Points to ponder. =)

Do you ever multiply a faster tempo by 0.67 then blend the next track in at that result? You can also multiply a slower one by 1.33 to get a new tempo. This seems to work when mixing a 6/8 song into 4/4 or vice versa. I'm new so I haven't figured out exactly what's going on; something with either the 1/8th notes matching or one becoming a slow triplet.

I do this already but on a basic battle mixer with no effects, and on Technics. Cool tricks but I don’t like the “sync” one. That’s when DJs suppose to show their skills or be creative when it comes to transitions. Great Video bro.

I wonder if you know for example the intro beats(32 eg) for each of your songs in your library? Or do you mark them at every song or are you only preparing special songs for your set where you know you need it for the transition. Because I set my cue points like at the start of the climax/drop/etc. What is your solution for that. I know that are a lot of questions but I'd be really happy about your thoughts to this
