If you want to test your ear, go here: • Ear training
I made this video to teach you a very efficient exercise to train your ear. It's also a good way to do ear and singing exercises, if you don't have access to an instrument.
If you press like, my next exercise video will be featuring your favorite singer!

This is super helpful. Here's how this works best for me - I let it run in the background and then glance over at it while I do light stuff like surfing the web. Many other sites offer ear training that requires you to interact and scores you but sometimes you just want those intervals to just sort of absorb, and for me at least, I have to keep chipping away at it a bit at a time each day. Thanks!

Neon Dazzle -- thank you. You have put together a musical and logical series to develop one's ear. I have a pretty good ear and just began on my own, about a week ago, to refine my ear and my understanding. Once I felt I understood what I needed, I began to work on my own, but also looked online to see what was being offered. I have felt that most of what is offered is too random and is likely to cause frustration -- at least that was true for me. Truly, thank you.

As a church pianist I have to play something on the fly.. Most of the time no sheet music.. if I get the first two notes... I can play the song note for note very quickly.. granted a use chords to help there... I took the quizzes and honestly not very good at hearing the intervals..Of course memory does help and knowing chord progressions help..I would grade myself a b plus on this playing for people. I have really got involved in bebop..I"m working on licks from confirmation by Charlie Parker.. Knowing intervals ascending and descending by heart would help. Same on guitar, do Jerry Reed, Brent Mason type stuff and of course other stylist.. Started out on M.r Guitar, Chet Atkins .. but looking back on things interval training was not given to me...

wish you could make one in random order. I like just playing it while I am doing chores at home. It helps to imprint the sound in my brain.

I'm in the process of making a series of question/answer videos to train your ear without an instrument. The difficulty will build up progressively, so the first few will be intervals in random order, then short melodies, etc. Make sure you subscribe if you’re interested in that.

Fantastic this clip is sooooooo revealing for me: revealing of the 'mystery' of chord composition - sound + place on piano + familiar tune. MANY THANKS !!!!

Hi Neon Dazzle, How does this help me play Piano By Ear? How do I recognise all intervals (The other intervals that start on D,E,F,G,etc)? I am able to recognise the intervals that start with C, but when it starts on a different note, the interval sounds different and I can't recognise it!! Help please

Hi! Intervals are the foundation of music. If you don’t understand them, you will have a hard time playing by ear. But mastering them doesn’t mean you can play any song you hear on the radio instantly. It's only the beginning of a long journey. I will make more videos on this eventually. This video is just to show you how to practice. You should be doing what is demonstrated here on your own instrument starting from every different note (I only did it in C in the video, otherwise it would be way too long). A minor second sounds like a minor second regardless of the note you start from. Try to play a bunch of minor seconds starting from different notes on your instrument and you will see. Identifying them easily will come in time.

Hi. I have played by ear most of my life, both piano and guitar. I just recently admitted that I have a mediocre ear, or, as I first noticed it, that I am a lazy listener. I have never taken the time to really listen to intervals and to know exactly what I am hearing. So one can play by ear and still fumble and search for exactly what one wants to play, especially once you know your chords and scales. So, to answer your question, learn your chords and chord relationships and you will discover that you will be able to play "by ear" with some effort. But to truly play by ear, you will need to do what is being offered here, and that is develop your ear to hear intervals, and melodies, and chord qualities.
