Welcome to episode 4 of Midlifer's Ultimate How-to Beginner Guide to film photography. In this episode, we explain where to buy your 135 film format or 35mm film cameras.
Before buying the film cameras consider where you are going to send it for development so that you know that this hobby remains accessible to you. Also, stick to the major brands as of film cameras as they are more likely to be repaired/restored "easily".
Places you can buy film cameras:
Local film developing lab or local photography/camera stores (Whompoa Colour Centre, Triple D, Riceball). Please take note some labs do not sell cameras!
Local online retailers like 8storeytree
Local Resellers on second-hand-goods websites like eBay and Carousell (OKBrandon or HandsOnFilm)
Physical pop-up stores (OKB.SG), flea markets or fellow camera enthusiasts
Major online retailers like Amazon, B&H or KEH
Smaller online retailers like Retrospekt, Catlabs or Brooklyn Film Camera
Look at the following aspects in selecting the place to buy it from:
Good customer service and allowing you to physically check the camera before making a purchase
Look carefully at the product that you are getting cause a model of the camera may have many sub-variants
Look at the seller rating or reputation
The shop, store or website should offer some kind of guarantee or warranty to protect you from buying a lemon
Ask how they store the film if you want
Don't be lured by too cheap a price, buyer beware and please do your due diligence and research!
Remember to store the cameras well once u have received them and in the next episode we will explain what to check for in your new camera.
