Pheasant is such a valuable material to the fly tier, and the flies that can be tied are endless. Spey flies, nymphs, and streamers just scratch the surface. Great topic!!

I have some ringneck pheasant skins. I am learning to tie with these feathers. My first try was with a Tenkara style fly because it was only thread and feather. Thank you for the video, it is very educational.

Also an effective all around wooly bugger variation I discovered is a black and gold one where the marabou and hackle are black and the chenille is gold. I combined a black wooly bugger with a gold kreelex crayfish to come up with that one.

Hi Jim, love the videos. You are a horse when it comes to the variety of fly patterns that you put videos on. I think what Jack Gartside is referring to when he talks about chicken poop feathers are chicken vent feathers. Hence, the poop reference as they are generally dirtied with chicken poop. Vent feathers are very similar to chickabou but not quite the same.

You are right but Jack called all the throw away feathers Poop LOL

Seeing your description of pheasant feathers, especially the aftershaft feathers, made me think of Jack Gartside’s Sparrow, a wonderful fly. I went back through your videos that I favorited & didn’t find one on the Sparrow. Perhaps I missed it, but if you haven’t done one, could you do one on the Sparrow or refer us to where we could find it. It is super effective.
@iangeise20764 жыл бұрын
He made one on they sparrow and there are helpful tips on tying it that other videos don’t have.
@TheFlymanJim4 жыл бұрын
I'll put that on my list

Do you use male or hen ringneck pheasant for fly tying? The pheasant rump at the start, is it male or hen patch?
@TheFlymanJim2 жыл бұрын
It is most likely male, since I bought it I don't know for sure . But you can use both if you hunt them. The male are more useful specifically when it come to the tails. The ones in this video are dyed.

Will there be a lot of useable feathers on a Ring Neck Pheasant Cape. I found a whole pelt of wings, tail and whole bird for $9.00
@TheFlymanJim3 жыл бұрын
There will be the same as in this video. AS long as your imagination works I'm sure you'll find plenty of uses. Merry Christmas

Can you please use blujay feather for a pike fly if possible
@TheFlymanJim3 жыл бұрын
I only have a few wing feathers from a bluejay. A hawk killed it in my yard. But I don't see how I can use them to make a Pike fly. I would use the strung saddle hackle to tie a fly like that. Check my video " Beginners Designing a Bass Fly" It will be in my playlist "Bass and Panfish". That will teach you how to tie one for Pike.
