As a tennis coach myself, I always tell clients to not watch so much KZbin tennis coaches. The only one I recommend is Intuitive because of how simple his explanations are. His coaching has actually helped my own game. What I really appreciate is how he puts in the concerted effort of making the min-ute details of strokes easy for all levels to understand. Keep it up, Nikolai.

What I like with the coach is to correct the first wrong habit, that more beginners fall into it, and it's hard to change the habit. Their way the best recommendation for a beginner is to go get a coach and the you go fly by your self. And the intuitive Tennis is a best palce to do so. Thanks Nick

Nice lesson! 👍 Her fingers being out of position on the grip and the back of the hand not being correctly faced towards the cheek on the follow-through are very keen observations! Now she has a chance of hitting some topspin 👌

Cool to see you fix her grip and then go into the follow through (finish). Most beginners have the problem with their grip which opens the strings and they pop everything up so you can see that she is hitting cleaner and hitting straighter after you fixed her grip and follow through. Great patience and coaching, Nick!

Drop feeding is the best way to work with beginners but most students are too impatient and want to be fed from across the net, which actually hinders their progress. Form and technique should be achieved first as you shared and then judgement and timing can be added after that is mastered.

Hi Nikola, I'm a tennis coach too. Sometimes I like to watch other coaches teach beginners. I liked your work with the previous female student, by the way. In this instance, I think you overlooked her stance. When she started focusing on grip and swing path, she started using an open stance, not really turning the shoulders anymore, right foot planted. Hips couldn't turn, neither could shoulders, so it was difficult for her to finish all the way where you wanted her to. Stance and balance are always a priority for me. Neutral stance for beginners preferably, finish "like a golfer" with the right heel up/racquet over left shoulder. Sometimes I will even teach that before the grip or preparation. I'll keep lurking once in a while 👀

Nik, funny enough, I read your about me section on your site. I’m from Rockford IL and took lessons at the clock tower when I was a kid. I’m now living in west palm beach and have been getting back into tennis for the first time. Ive got some consistent ground strokes but really lacking a consistent serve. I’ve been learning so much from your videos.

Perfect ! If my teacher, when I started playing tennis, had made these kinds of corrections, I wouldn't have had so many problems with the right stroke It took me 10 years to correct the right shot, on my own, and it was a very difficult process to the point of wanting to give up playing such the discomfort that the blow transmitted to me.

I was taught to think of the racquet as a windshield wiper on the forehand. That motion gets the vertical path and the wrist turn at finish and I think that its super easy to understand that motion. Coming from racquetball, I had to unlearn this natural 'wrist slap' flat forehand that I used for years and thinking 'windshield wiper' really, really helped me.

I started teaching my wife about a year ago when she had never held the racket before and never played any sports. She now can hit topspin forehand pretty good. One year, yes, but on average about 6-7 hours a week. What I see from this video is two things that make it hard for this lady to hit the topspin FH. First is her grip I think is more like eastern. Western or semi western grip will make it easier. Second is she doesn’t lag the racket enough, or the wrist doesn’t extend enough. I told my wife to start with the racket head pointing back at the fence, then when starting hitting she’d move the racket forward with the butt cap leading the way, then comes the windshield wiper action to bring the racket to her shoulder. After months she started to get this mechanism into her muscle memory.

Some good progress. Suggestions: Consider hand feeding from the service line as next progression vs. racket feed from across the net. Also use of progressive balls to learn to rally in half court with technical and tactical conformity. Shadow swings also can be very helpful. 💡Perhaps do a video series of common stoke faults and fixes, starting with forehand of course! 😀

Is Justina using a super-light racquet? The wristy-ness, grip idiosyncrasies & other issues might be more likely with a racquet that that has a very low swingweight or a low mass (like 10oz or lower). A heavier frame might be more conducive to proper stroke mechanics See a lot of students with a grip that's too firm or tight. Do see very many with grip pressures that are too loose -- at least with not with racquets that have enough mass or swingweight

Why not to start engage body rotation and activate left hand from the beginning? Clear that left hand is dead - just hanging, not helping with backswing and body rotation, maybe its better to learn to catch the racquet with the left hand after the swing, imho it helps for better balance and body rotation… See a lot of rec players with hanging left hand…

Nik. Your instructional videos are usually very detailed and complete with lot's of information on the point you are making. But in teaching something as basic as a beginner forehand as shown on this video there is no discussion of the use of the off hand to establish some kind of coil. As a result even though you focus on a strong grip she still ends up "poking" at the ball rather than rotating into the shot. Even in last week's tutorial with another more advanced player, the dangling useless offhand was not addressed. Don't you think the use of the offhand and unit turn should be taught as early as possible to beginners?
@CoachAdrian
@CoachAdrian 3 жыл бұрын
I think the offhand and other issues will eventually be addressed but I don't think this video was meant to be a "complete" video on how to make a beginner forehand turn into an intermediate forehand. I thought it was simply meant to identify technical flaws (her fingers and follow-through) and quickly correct them.
@LetsBuildThatApp
@LetsBuildThatApp 3 жыл бұрын
When teaching, you should only focus on one thing at a time. If the player doesn't even understand the grip and swing motion, there's virtually no hope in establishing the turn in the same lesson. I feel tennis is a game that looks easy on TV, but has an extremely steep learning curve in the beginning for the average adult with little experience.
