Beginner's Guide To Choosing Knitting Needles

If you've ever stood in a wool shop surrounded by knitting needles and felt completely baffled this is the video for you.
I will guide you through the vast array of needles that I have accumulated over my years of knitting and suggest which needles might suit you for different reasons.
I'll explain why my favourite needles earned pride of place in my knitting bag and encourage you to let me know which needles you prefer and why.

I was given a very long set of metal needles. I’ve been practicing on them with a lot of frustration from the loops sliding off & feeling like they are just too big! My son & daughter-in-law recommended bamboo. I ordered a couple different ones from Amazon & they came yesterday. I am looking so forward to trying them today! I have loved watching your videos! The metal can be so slippery, can’t believed I used the for so many years, bet it was likely because when I started knitting we mostly used acrylic yarn, and is was more ‘sticky’ with metal needles. I bet you’ll love the bamboo! Happy knitting 🧶

I was looking for a good video series on knitting for beginners. It is hard to go from one channel to another because you loose direction and continuity wiht different knitters. Hi Hannah. I love the pink and blue pearlised knitting needles, that I think you said were your Grandmother's. Apart from 3 or 4 pairs of straight needles, in my small stash I love the Knit Pro Zing circular needles, ideal if you have Arthritis. I don't think I will ever go back to straights. Love, love them. ❤ 🧶

I use bamboo needles to knit something lately. I find that they're soft. They don't poke into the skin on my fingers in a painful way. Therefore, I enjoy them more than the metal ones! I love to use them; it's a hobby of mine.

As a beginner that's just about 3 days in, I am using 5mm plastic needles that the Mrs has given me. I think i might go for the wooden or bamboo ones in the future just on looks alone for now although i struggle to control the plastic ones as I have large hands. Thanks a lot!

I've just decided to start knitting again since I was a kid! I only ever knitted squares, except one time I managed to start knitting a jumper but never finished it because I got stuck trying to reduce it at the neck.. And nobody not even my Gran helped me... I liked working with metal needles then but maybe as I'm in my 50s now I'll consider trying bamboo ones this time around..!

I have been teaching my grandmother how to knit without knowing other kinds of stitches, how to increase or decrease, and how to make jumpers or clothing I hope to jump to an advanced level .today by chance I bought two kinds of bamboo 3mm, and mambo with circular plastic link between them

Hi Hannah! My favourite needles are my Knitpicks circular needles set, and bamboo double pointed needles for socks. I have broken a few of the bamboo double pointed needles after several pairs of socks, but I like that they are warm to the touch and light weight. Thanks for sharing what you like to work with! Hi NIcci, Oh, I love circular needles too, so perfect for more stitches on the needles. I have a few of the Knit-Pro pieces to mix and match. I must admit I've broken some bambook needles too, but i love that they're so sustainable and cheap to replace. xox

My fist pair of needles I bought were metal as they were the cheapest the store had. My work looks perfect with them, they're just to slippery (especially beginning and ending rows). I tried switching to bamboo and I find them too sticky and my works ends up looking sloppy (maybe more practice). I do love the thicker bamboo needles US 13 worked perfectly for super bulky yarn. I'm considering trying acrylic and see that possibly works better. As a new knitter I wanna find out what works best before investing in a full set.

Perhaps try a single pair of wooden needles of a smaller size. It may just be what you need. Slightly different to bamboo. Happy knitting 🧶
