I did the clipless thing for years when I was road biking, but I've never gotten along with it on my mountain bike. Although I do like the fact my feet are planted on rough terrain without thinking about it, I struggle with them when I need to get a foot down instantly like with a front end wash out. I've broken my ankle multiple times (when racing motorcycles), so twisting my ankle to clip out is a issue. So I'll stick with flats. Good ones like the Tenet Occults and sticky shoes rarely allow for a foot to come off by accident and I can dab freely if ever needed.

I've been saved by a last second dab on too many occasions to consider switching to clips. I think they are fine for racers or Strava heroes but for the average weekend warrior a good pair of flat pedals combined with some grippy MTB shoes work perfectly.

This is the main issue. If you can get to where they're 2nd nature they're great. Until then they'll always be playing on your mind. I've ridden clipless for a long time but fully understand why people don't get into them. You can see from the replies there's a lot of fear over crashing.

On jumps I think it's better to have flat pedals, since if an accident occurs and you fall of the bike, the bike won't fall on you like it does (and there are many people that experienced this) when you're on clipless pedals. But for flowy singletracks or XC it is the way to go.

Different strokes for different folks obvs. but for me, clipless pedals transformed my riding for the better. Sure, it's a bit scarier on a technical climb where you might need to dab or fall over, but I feel that running clipless actually fosters commitment. As in, "I'd *better* clear this section because if I hesitate I might take a tumble!"

I would disagree slightly on trying to exclusively learn this while riding - I took about an hour with my bike in front of the TV and clicked in and out for about 30 min on each side. Before that I occasionally forgot to clip out and one time I fell and my knee was injured for several months. After that one practice round it's gotten over into my muscle memory and even after several weeks of not riding clipped in (during deep winter for example) and riding flats on my commuter, I still click out intuitively even when doing close call emergency stops. That one hour of practice really made a world of difference.

I’ve been using Time ATAC pedals for years as there is so much float in them. Crank Brothers design looks like they lifted their concept from Time. Shimano mess my knees up. Shimano SPD offers a multi direction cleat the SH 56 M and the release tension on Shimano SPD pedals is adjustable. Take this into consideration when going clipless for first time. Once your comfortable on this set up you can increase tension then change the cleat back to the standard SH 51 single release that comes with the pedals. I run SPD on my mountain, gravel and road bikes. The SH 56 M cleat has been my mountain bike cleat since it was introduced a long time ago. Lots of KZbin videos on clipless really don’t give you all the important technical information on the various pedals on the market.

I started riding clipless pedals as a kid in the 90s. My dad was a serious road rider so the clipless pedals were a no-brainer. I got used to them on the road and when I got into mountain biking I put them on my bike because to me that was just what pedals were. Most bikes came with cheap plastic flats that I assumed were only for the showroom. I've tried riding flats a couple times in recent years, and they're fun, but they feel weird to me. I like that "stuck to the bike" feeling.

Good tip. Keep in mind that you'll need to break in your shoes as well. After clipping out several hundred times a little bit of rubber is removed from the shoe and makes things easier to clip in and out. Just spend a little time each night clipping in and out to wear in those shoes. This will help with your muscle memory on clipping in and clipping out along with breaking in your shoes.

I have used a variety of different clipless pedals. I have used Shimano when I first started using them. I have also used Time pedals. The closest I got to using the Mavic ATAC pedals was when I used the Mavic ATAC cleats in my Time ATAC pedals. I now use Crank Brothers. I use the Mallet E on my new mountain bike, Mallet 2 on my old mountain bike, Candy 2 on my hybrid and Egg Beater 1 on my road bike when I do ride it. I have also used the Look Keo pedals on my road bike. I just have trouble using single sided pedals. I also start doing a bad impression of former GCN presenter Matt Stevens. I just wish Neil had said not to fall off unclipping in a town centre, before I couldn't unclip in the centre of Wolverhampton over 20 years ago.

It took me 2wice to learn; ALWAYS disconnect with your non dominate foot before you come to a stop... And vise-versa! In other words - if you're right handed, disconnect your left foot and vise-versa! I learnt this from two (embarrassing) falls but it took two times to figure it out. Perhaps others are able to use their dominant foot as well but I'm just sharing my experience and hopefully whom ever is reading this, is comfortable that way.

Love GMBN, best KZbin channel. I want to try clipless mostly to keep my knee alignment straight. I broke my right foot really badly (6 broken bones, 5 dislocated toes, 6 screws, 5 pins, 3 surgeries and 2 years of PT) and now I have this tendency to cock that heel inward to the point that my heel has rubbed all the anodization off my right crank arm and I think that's causing me knee pain. I was wondering if anyone else has experience with clipless and knee pain?
@ChrisHubbard777
@ChrisHubbard777 3 жыл бұрын
Sorry to hear about your injury. There's a lot of debate on flats vs clips for knee pain. I have had friends who developed knee pain when using clips switched back to flats and it went away. If you want to ensure your foot stays in alignment I would suggest a super grippy flat pedal and shoe or a clipless system that holds your foot securely like Shimano. Crankbros and others similar have a lot of float which will allow your foot to move more freely. I'd say it's worth a try and if pain gets worse definitely stop and try something else. Good luck!

tips for using clipless pedals. get shimano spd do not ever use sh56 mult-release cleats only Sh51 as being on way release you can run the springs on the pedals on lowest for easy entry and exit but they never come undone when you don't want them to. if you use 56's you can pull out in any direction which sounds good for safety but means you need more spring tension to stop from coming out all the time which makes entry harder and you'll still pull out at the wrong moment. spend time on your cleat position, not just front to back and side to side but also rotation the 2 bolt cleats can be locked down when rotated and you can mess it up, you want your foots natural resting point when pedaling to be in the middle of the cleats float so they don't undo when you move around on the bike there trail pedals with the larger body are better, and some good trail type shoes that you can actually go ot the coffee shop in without looking like a donk are good also. leave race stuff for race days.

I made the mistake of starting to unclip going inwards, it's a hard habit to break, especially when I ride 95% clip less. So now I have to make sure I use minimal float and carefully aligned cleats as possible. Don't make my mistake!

I have a bad shoulder. There’s no way I would switch to clipless because I’m not risking tipping over a dozen times. If your in mint condition may be worth exploring 👍🏻

I'm not able to ride a bike without clipless pedals... the control you have on climbing and descending when you are attached to pedals is not comparable to flat (imho) you feel "one thing" with the bike.

It always makes me laugh that when coming up with a description for clip on pedals.. but not to be confused with the ones with straps... they decided that clipless was better than strapless... So here we are... in a world with vege "Ham" burgers, Clip on "Clipless" pedals... and the C."I".A ... q8) I sort of miss my old steel Milazo Crazyhorse (Think cheapest Walmart, made in New Zealand). I fitted it with strap clips and an elliptical 3 sprocket front. With the extra power from the oval sprockets and being able to lift with one leg while pushing with the other, it was really great at steep grades (when I definitely wasn't). Now I have a 10x1 and another 20 years worn off my belt...

And what ever you do! DONT PUT STUDS on your Clipless pedals, studs are for flat pedals so you dont twist you feet and come of the Pedals, but on Clipless Pedals twisting is the ONLY way to get of them pedals!

The day someone makes a wide toe box shoe like Ultra or Keen, in a clipless pedal, I'm buying. Nearly all shoes on the market deform your feet and cause hammer toe. Your toes are meant to splay just like your fingers. Until then its flat pedals and Keen slip ons for me.

@@benwithrow5044 Nope. Same design as 99% of the shoes on the market. Have you actually seen the shape of a Keen slip on? I am literally spoiled them and Alta. I seen where someone is mounting clip-less to Croc sandals. Someone is catching on. And never let a shoe salesman tell you that the shoe will break in. It's the bones in your feet that will "break in" over time. Thanks for your recommendation.

I’m enjoying the bike so far kzbin.infoUgkxMesz3KOGEmwmvyKQfLfrRSUXLFzfVHZA My only real complaints are the brakes and the pedals. I feel like a bike designed for bigger people should have much larger pedals and more heavy duty brakes. I’ve only gotten two really good rides out of it, minimal downhill action, and the brakes feel like they’re already going out. A larger person has more momentum, so I think this wasn’t thought through very well. Also, I wear size 13-14 wide shoes. My feet cramp up on these pedals that are clearly made for smaller feet. Since I’m not a pro rider (and I don’t think many are who purchase this bike) I don’t think that the straps on the pedal are necessary at all. None of this takes away from the enjoyment I get from riding, however. I’ll just head to a bike shop to improve on a few things.

Ok, just gonna ask this here: why the hell are pedals that you clip into called clip-*less* pedals? Clipless would seem to imply "without clips," so why aren't they called "clip-in" pedals?
