I really appreciate how technical this is but you explain it from the ground up. A lot of new player advice is pretty fluffy stuff but I've been really excited to jump into the sweaty mechanics and fights of this game

I just finished shadowbringers and clicked onto this video out of curiosity to see if ive missed any fundamentals throughout my play. Sure enough, this video showed me how exactly to find the potency of dots/hots. Id just taken it on faith that having dia up was better than glare, but now i understand why. Excellent video, thank you for sharing!

Really good 101 here! I've been seeing a lot more sprouts than usual lately, hope this reaches their feeds :) here's a couple things I thought to add: 1) The only thing more important than ABC is staying alive, so as you are learning make sure to dodge attacks and perform fight-specific mechanics even at the cost of your damage. This will become more and more important the higher level you are, as the punishment for getting hit by avoidable damage goes from laughable, to inconvenient, to _dangerous._ Don't let ARR low damage fool you into bad habits! 2) Communication is key! Don't be afraid to tell people you're new, and ask questions whenever you're unsure. Keep a close eye on Party chat (colored light blue by default), as during dungeons and trials this is where the veterans are likely to tell you if you're doing something wrong, or warn ahead of time if something is important. For the new folks playing on console, I strongly suggest getting a cheap USB keyboard for this reason. 3) FFXIV buttons have an action queue built in, so if you press something a fraction of a second before it's available it'll still come out. This makes weaving properly a bit more consistent, specially for those of us playing with high ping. I tend to just double or triple tap my buttons to ensure everything comes out right on time, but you _can_ spam it if you want :P 4) I strongly suggest finding some videos on how to mess with your UI, keybinds, and fiddling with the many QoL features of the game, it'll make the whole experience a whole lot smoother. One good example is moving the castbar of a targeted enemy closer to the center of the screen, so you can see it clearly and quickly. This is important for every role, but it's _specially_ relevant for tanks, since you're usually the one on the business end of said casts!

These are pretty good tips, particularly the communication one. I might partially disagree a little with 1) though, but that's more if you want to get good at the game rather than just okay. Learning how your rotation fits into a particular fight's mechanics is part of learning those mechanics, particularly for high end content. I would also point to a lot of lvl 90 content's damage being laughable, but you are right for the punishment going up from say lvl 15 to lvl 50 or 60. For a sprout though it is perfectly valid to err on the side of caution, but it's also valid to try push yourself a little.

@@booshalmighty Yeah, it's important to push your uptime and greed a little but I'm always weary of saying that and then wondering why people in my duties have 5 vulns before we're even halfway done 😅 It's a balance we all kinda have to figure out for ourselves

This was a really well done video! One thing to point out is that animation lock varies depending on the job you play. Your example of DRG is actually a good example of a job that has pretty insane animation lock (even after the EW updates), but there are a couple of jobs that will allow for triple weaving given specific circumstances, an example being RDM triple weaving Fleche, Contra Sixte, and Engagement during the second part of their burst (assuming all 3 abilities are up during that time). Typically jobs with super fast GCDs like MNK and NIN are unable to do stuff like this due to how fast they play. But I digress! I love that you went over some of the more unknown aspects of combat. As much as I love FF14, it tends to leave a lot of things up to interpretation rather than walking you through some of the harder combat aspects of the game, and guides like yours are an invaluable resource for new players. Keep up the good work and take my sub! :3

@booshalmighty 5 ай бұрын
Thanks. The reason I didn't mention triple weaving being possible is because it's only in narrow circumstances and if you have amazing ping/noclippy. The aim of the vid is to give good heuristics for a beginner, so double weaving is a safer suggestion. Same how AoE at 3+ is generally good advice, even if Jolt into Impact is a gain on 2.

this was a good video, wish it had been around when i started new! one thing that would have been really nice though is showing that really good gcd animation lock diagram to include a version for 1.5s spells. It's easy to forget how it feels to be a new player, but a lot of magic class players don't realize what the cast bar means in relation to the gcd (especially black mage players), so having it pictured out could be very helpful. it's a common mistake for BLMs to think the cast bar IS the gcd for example! Another unintuitive thing to point out with cast time gcds is that the gcd starts rolling the moment you start casting, before the spell has gone out. i.e. the gcd starts rolling the same time as an instant gcd like weaponskills, and that if you interrupt the cast time, the global cooldown resets, and it basically turns that section of casting into something equivalent to downtime

This is actually some really nice constructive feedback. Thank you. I was hoping that footage would be enough to show by example on the casting stuff, but you're right, there was no reason not to include a version of the diagram. I think maybe because I didn't get into casters really until I was more familiar with the game, I might have some blind spots for what it is like to be a new player who starts as a caster. I will say that some of the sort of stuff you mention is probably more for including in the caster video when I make the role specific vids. Same as how I didn't go into details about melee uptime and auto attacks. But I think I would have forgotten about the Cast =/= gcd thing, which I know is relevant for spells that have loooong casts, like Raise and Fire IV.
@Awuga
@Awuga 5 ай бұрын
@booshalmighty yeah! if you make a caster video making a diagram for dif cast times of spells would be great, like fire 4 especially. Showing how the cast time goes past the window and delays your next gcd and them comparing that to an instant fire 4 with tripple cast would be great; I've been struggling to explain the concept to a sprout that started on blm and ive had trouble making it sound intuitive, and the diagrams ive found havent quite cut it. but your design is really good! i think it could be helpful to a lot of people to show how spell gcds work with cast times like that

Agreed. I think I spent over 2000 hours on the free trial back when it stopped at lvl 60, so there is plenty of stuff to do. Made friends, learnt a bunch of jobs, and did a ton of optional fights. I still raid with many of the friends I made back then.
