very informative video, i just one one question, i plan on automating a room using 'works with siri shortcuts' lights and a homepod. would it chew up through my iphone's battery if i use homepod for 'hey siri, turn on the lights' kind of commands? what if i keep an ipad with the same apple id constantly connected to the wifi, would it work the same/better? thanks!
@AdamsTechLife5 күн бұрын
nope! it has minimal impact to the battery on an iphone or ipad :) just like using siri for other things on those devices the phone and ipad do have to be powered on and connected to wifi for the command to work on the homepod though

I like this from a security point of view, for example if I have my phone out while walking down the street and someone comes by and steals it from me I like that I can set up an automation that if settings is ever loaded up or Find My application is loaded it will automatically go to lock screen to lock the potential thief out. my only issue is the action has to be done first before it goes to lock screen, an issue where I see this being a problem is if the potential thief tries to turn airplane mode on to prevent Find My working, Airplane mode is activated and then goes to lock screen which is great because it keeps the thief out of my phone but I'd like the action of lock screen to happen BEFORE airplane mode is activated and only activated after I unlock my phone from the lock screen, is this currently possible with the shotcuts app?
@AdamsTechLifeАй бұрын
not to my knowledge. that sounds super complex and i can see it being trigged easily
@collwyrАй бұрын
@@AdamsTechLife yeah my temp fix is just setting up an automation that when airplane mode is activate, go lock screen then turn airplane mode off, it means when I do want to go on airplane mode I have to turn this automation off but that's not a big bother for the time being.

Thanks, you should do a tutorial for dummies (like me) I'm trying to use the IF statement - If I am at home turn this ON -, but I have not idea how to do it...
@AdamsTechLife3 ай бұрын
That’s a good idea. You just use the if action and create your condition with your location by using the get location action and maybe some variables. It can be tricky lol

I am wondering about a short cut for the following: - I am driving my car using my iphone (Maps app) for directions and the iphone is plugged into the car radio to charge it. - At the end of any traffic announcement from the radio the iphone (uncommanded by me and annoyingly) starts playing music through the car radio. I work around this by saying: "Hey Siri, Pause Music, Show Maps". Could this be turned into a short cut so I can issue Siri with a more concise command to reduce the driving distraction (especially when Siri fails to understand what I am asking for because of the unwanted music now blaring out of the speakers), or are you aware of a way to prevent the iphone starting to play music every time a traffic announcement ends? Thank you 🙂

That is a cool idea but I don’t think it’s possible at least not easily. I’m not sure how the phone would know when a traffic announcement ends on the radio

Is there a way to create a shortcut like the "Watch TV" you created here to turn on an android TV and a game console like PS5 or Xbox using an iphone, ipad with a homepod mini? I would like to enter the room say: "Hey Siri Game mode" to the homepod mini and for the lights to turn off, and the TV and game console to turn on.

Not natively. You could maybe use a third party bridge to find a way to expose those actions to the home app. Or maybe a smart plug? Idk if it’ll work tho

Hey yo, this is really awesome. I would like to set up something (heating ladder and vacuum cleaner) at the same time for my wife (after she will be leaving the bathroom) but she has got bigger problem with english than me :D is siri able to accept random words from random language?? Can I set it up somehow??

i haven't tried that as i only really speak english. you may have to google that one lol

I’m trying to have Siri start a recording through voice memo but idk how to have it set up where I say a phrase to activate the shortcut

Create a new shortcut and use the record voice memo action and setup a phrase to activate (name of shortcut)

Dear Adam I’ve a question for you because I don’t know how to do what I’ve in mind. Actually I really don’t know neither it could be possible.. I try to describe my situation. I’ve an action figure that can light its eyes using its own RF remote. To have the ability to turn on it with Siri I’ve bought a BroadLink WiFi device (RM4 pro), downloaded its own app and setup it to have the turn on input command directly on my phone. Then In the app I used the option to add it to Siri. It has created a shortcut that I can recall on my phone and on my HomePods as well. Now I would like to go even further. I would like to create a shortcut that should turn on my action figure when a motion sensor detects a movement. I have tried and traied again but there is no way it works.. In your experience do you think is it possible to set? If yes could you help me to set? It would be great, you know. Please let me know. Many many thanks. Giuliano

If you can find a way to get the eyes light in the Home app, either as a switch or as another type of device, then yes, but otherwise you aren’t able to run a shortcut within automation natively. You can try using an app called push cuts but gets a little complicated

My shortcuts look different. It ask ‘if’ and ‘condition.’ This is confusing. 🥺

If you’re going to do a tutor beginners, it should be one that everyone can do, not one involving a particular TV service.

I don’t see the point. Open music app click play = 2 clicks. Open shortcut app click play music. = 2 clicks. Point?? Open house app click switch on light = 2 clicks open shortcut app click switch on lights = 2 clicks. Point???

you can run shortcuts without being in the shortcuts app and that's where the magic lies. see the part in the video about running via voice and with widgets.

You can have more than just 2 scripts you do realize that right? You can put the icon on your home screen and set it to do a series of things. I have a shortcut set for driving, puts my phone on do not disturb, turns on Bluetooth to connect to my car, prompts me for directions to places I go a lot if I’m somewhere unfamiliar, then open Spotify

I have a shortcut for when I get pulled over. I tell Siri I’m being pulled over. It automatically sends my location to my emergency contacts, starts recording video. Dims the screen so they can’t really tell. Turns my network to do not disturb so notifications don’t mess the recording up. And if anything stops the recording it automatically saves it to the cloud. It’s crazy helpful to use shortcuts. I have disabled friends and this app helps them sooooo much

You don’t see the point because you’re close-minded about a possibly very good feature. As every product, there are extremely good use cases, and some that can still be done the way that is currently being done as your example, hitting Apple Music or whatever lol. Just because that scenario doesn’t highlight how good the feature can be, doesn’t mean you won’t find one that’s very useful for yourself. I literally just came across shortcuts last night and even I’m not naive enough to just count this feature out when it’s obvious it could be of incredible potential. Most people’s phones are their most used product. Relearning how to evolve with new tech every few years is important.
