I have managed to make some lizard lips. still better than I thought I would do. I will practice more. lol. I really liked the way you made the slice and there was the lower lip. I imagined God doing a similar thing back in the day. Wow. ...okay, my second one looks like a mouth to me. I see the plump lips are super hard, mine are thin, but I am very happy for my second try. awesome.

@@BeginnersSchool What kind of clay are you using? I'm using Sargent Plastalina and it definitely does not smooth the way yours does when you run your fingers across it. Also, my clay ends up looks grainy -- there are little sloppy bits that look a bit like the rubbings from an eraser that get stuck in my work. Thoughts? Thanks!

We use a non-drying, oil-based clay called plastilina. It's easy to work with and is much less messy then ceramic clay! Porcelain is a very difficult clay to sculpt with! It is often too soft to hold, especially if you're making anything medium to large scale as it tends to slump over. If you are set on using ceramic clay for sculpture, you may want to consider switching to a stiffer clay body.

I am new to sculpturing so this question may be far simpler (or apparent) than I think it is. For a single element, nose, mouth, eyes, how does one determine whether to add clay or remove clay to achieve the end result?

Hi Paul, That's a great question and one not easily answered! Ultimately it's your decision as the artist to decide how much or how little to use. Let's think about a nose for example: if you are sculpting a rather large, stately, man's nose, you will use more clay than if you are sculpting the nose of a child. Consider your reference images and scale--the larger you make the individual element, the more clay you will need proportionally. Sorry that's not a very definitive answer, but I hope it helps! Welcome to the world of sculpting--enjoy! :)

new to sculpting terracotta. Can small wood dowels or string in the clay be put in the kiln?

Good question! The answer is both yes and no. Both will burn out in the kiln due to the high temperatures, but wood dowels can cause your piece to break because the shrinkage rate between wood and clay is different. Basically, if you build a sculpture out of clay around a wood dowel armature, the clay will shrink about 15% (depending on the type of clay you're using) and the wood will not shrink--it will likely expand due to the moisture in the clay. As the clay dries, it will crack around the dowel, causing your piece to explode in the kiln! Cotton string shouldn't be a problem, but don't use synthetic string as it may melt on the kiln shelf or release harmful vapors.

When doing sculptures of people or animals with high details do you want a clay that requires firing/baking? and would this be a good clay to use? >> Standard Ceramic 553 Warm Buff Stoneware Clay. Just did a sculpture of a head and sadly I noticed it was a plastalina modeling clay it cant be baked and it will never harden.

Hi Ron, Yes, that's the one thing with plastilina clay is that it never hardens. In order to have your plastilina sculpture live forever, you need to make a mold of it and cast it in another material. We have instructional videos on simple one-part mold making and more complex two-part mold making if that's an avenue you'd like to pursue. Ceramic clay is good IF you have access to a kiln. The stoneware clay you mentioned above fires to a cone 6, which is around 2200* F. If you don't have your own kiln, you may be able to enroll in a class at a local community college or art studio that will allow you to use theirs. Ceramic clay is a different beast altogether and has to be treated in a very different way than plastilina. If you do decide to go with ceramic clay, that one looks pretty good. For small details, you want something with a fine grog (basically like sand--too much or too coarse will really frustrate you when trying to do detail work). If you don't have access to a kiln and don't want to try mold making, you could always use an oven-baked modeling clay such as Fimo or Sculpey. These clays act like plastilina in that they don't need to be kept damp throughout the process and are malleable until the time you bake them. I believe they should be baked in an oven that you don't use for cooking (get an old toaster oven off Craigslist and dedicate it just to your sculpture). You can buy these online or in most craft stores like Michael's. Hope this helps! Good luck with your sculpting!

The heads we're doing have to be hollow, so I can't really carve too deep into the face. How would I go about making lips on a hollow form?

The lips will require extra clay in order to protrude from the face, so any carving done will be on top of that extra clay. You shouldn't have any trouble!
