Hey :) I’m from Germany and I just turned 15 and I’m really interested in learning how to reduce my waste. I’ve done some research and It’s really scary to see what we’ve done... I’m trying to be a part of this growing community of people from all around the world acting on climate change trough the way we live and I think you’re videos are really helpful!! :)

Nina it must be something about European nations that support these ideas much, much better than America does!
I am 13 and I am interested in this way of living and I have been trying to reduce my trash the best I can. I am going to get some ingredients to make my own toiletry products tomorrow.

I totally agree about your first tip! In my country (Thailand), Government had launch campaign to reduce plastic garbage but it's just telling people to reduce but people really have no idea why they have to do this (we used to had campaign to carry cloth bag like 4-5 years before but that was fail). They do not know what are the impact to our planet, don't know a lot of things that already happened and effected them. People need to know and understand why some people are doing this. Enjoying your video too!

that is the first time I love so much a video about zero waste. The more I see your videos, the more I appreciate where all this work you are sharing with us comes from. You have a very intelligent and sensitive approach to things that are often followed by the book. You seem like everything you do, you do from the heart. It's pretty rare to see, I like to see it.

I knew plastics were a problem and started reducing what my family uses years ago. I go about this very slowly. Last year, the April 2018 issue of National Geographic was an entire issue devoted to the problem of plastics on our planet. They showed so many photos of plastic even in the ocean. Since then I have begun reducing even more plastics in earnest! It is so very important! I make my husband and kids crazy sometimes. They love the convenience of plastic packaging.

Somehow we managed to end up with about 20 toothbrushes due to either dentist office visits or buying a package of toothbrushes because we thought we were out...whatever. Once I emptied out all our bathroom drawers, I discovered (and this is no joke) 12 bottles of lotion, several packages of toothbrushes, about 10 travel-sized toothpaste tubes, roughly 25 little boxes of dental floss, and lip balm...oh the lip balm! So, anyway, for close to 4 years now, I haven't had to buy any of those things. When I'm done with a toothbrush, it gets used for cleaning in small areas or detail cleaning. My hope is that once those things are used up and gone, I can just keep what is needed and that's it. And I haven't needed to buy any plastic storage containers because things like yogurt or sour cream come in plastic containers (at least, I've never seen them come in anything else where I live) so I save them to reuse for left overs, giving food away, etc. Ice cream buckets are so good for transporting water for cleaning. And if a take away container can be reused, it is reused. Even plastic grocery bags. They are handy to have at times. I do have plenty of the cloth bags, but sometimes you need a bag for something and don't want to use a cloth one. So, I carry some with me when shopping. And, they make great garbage can liners and to clean the kitty box with. I love this video. It really helps to make me feel better because you don't make me feel like an absolute heathen for having plastic in the house. :)

Sorry one more comment: being easy on yourself is such good advice! The most frustrating part of this whole effort is when you arm yourself fully equipped with containers and phrases to say to people and then a misunderstanding or unexpected plastic item(s) shows up ad nauseum and you can end up privately feeling overwhelmed and embarrassed at how big the plastic problem is. It's worth continuing to try for so many great reasons. Thanks for the video! :)

I really enjoyed this video! I'm very new to the whole zero waste thing, and am learning that some things are trickier than others! I'm very lucky that I have a local shop that sells loose produce, which is amazing, but it's at least twice the price so I'm having to really be careful where else I spend my money! One thing I'm trying to do, every time I buy something, is think- can I get it packaging free, or from a local independent shop, or even from a charity shop? I'm still making mistakes but I am SO enjoying the changes I've made so far!

This made me so happy - because I saw how many of these things I'm already doing! I was indeed intimidated by many videos I've seen. but watching this I thought: I never use disposable dishes or cups, I carry a plastic cup (left from when my kids were small) in my bag for drinking water wherever I am, also cloth carrying bags are always in my bag as well so no plastic bags. It made a big difference to focus on the positive, as opposed to looking at all the packaging going into my trash and feeling upset about it! (such as packaging from snacks my daughter buys, or things my husband brings home).

I now have 5 different kinds of jars (4 per set) that I fill up with bulk items from 3 different grocery stores. I also have several reusable produce bags and cotton bags that I can use for smaller bulk items and even as snack bags (for example, if we are at a Starbucks getting a pastry, we ask them to fill our cotton bag with the pastry-- or ask them to just hand it to us sans paper baggy). The hubby has always leaned zero waste without realizing it and the kids love the praise and attention at stores like Lush as they proudly walk out with their own bath bomb in a drawstring cotton baggy. :).

Hi I have a question : how do you deal with buying clothes? With all the price tags and everything..
@FairylandCottage6 жыл бұрын
Gabrielle Nice question. First of all there is so much waste in the clothing industry full stop so I rarely buy new items of clothing. The tags are usually paper and the little plastic tag is waste. Remember, the world we live in is a linear not circular society so it's made to make waste. Shop in thrift stores or buy new clothes made with natural fabrics like cotton or linen. These last longer and can decompose. Don't worry we all make waste. The idea is to be conscious and responsible and reduce your overall waste. I hope that helped answer your question. X
@gabrielle78296 жыл бұрын
Fairyland Cottage you did thnx!
@naomimay825 жыл бұрын
The company PACT sells 100% organic cotton that is fair trade certified and conserves water as well (they use less water to make the clothing). There are no tags and the clothes come in recycled cardboard. I have been buying from them lately. My son needed new T-shirt’s because he grew. I bought him 7 new shirts from there. Seven may seem excessive, but he is a dirty boy! Lol! I have to make sure there are enough for plenty of shirt changes if he gets filthy playing outside with the dogs.

I notice in a lot of zero waste videos it suggests using essential oils, but I find that every oil bottle has a plastic lid and plastic dripper . Any alternatives ? I know the glass part of the bottle is recyclable but the lid and dripper part isn’t
@FairylandCottage6 жыл бұрын
Barry Williams .. hey there I recommend checking out Andrea from BeZero. She is the queen of zero waste living. She is on Instagram and has a fantastic website. She says that there is no way to be completely zero waste and that we will all make waste. I recycle the plastic lids in my local recycling center. You would need a shop like they have in Colorado where you refill your oils for a container in order to have no waste at all. I haven't found an alternative here in Ireland yet.

There is a source in Vancouver Canada, www.sudsandscents.com I get my essential oils from in larger quantities and refill smaller bottles myself. I am a massage therapist and use a lot of oils, plus I make my own room sprays, salves and cream perfumes and cleaning products. I buy Lavender in 500ml brown glass bottles which I then use with re-used spritzers/sprayers for my cleaning products. For me, starting the low-waste journey began with cloth grocery bags. I then collected them from places in England as souveneirs, now I use beeswax wraps, make my own produce and bulk food bags and have really gotten into wicker baskets for at the markets or even the hardware store. Once you make one small change it starts snow-balling. It's so fun! And rewarding. Thanks for inspiring me with each new video, Niamh!

Every autumn my grandchildren and I go collect fir cones....all the year we keep the tin cups from tee lights, and ends of candles. Then in the autum when it’s time to start lighting the fire, we get a big old saucepan and melt down al, the bits of wax, it’s expsay to get it out of the tin cups just squeeze and it crumbles. Then you can begin....outside we lay out, Basket of cones The saucepan of liquid wax A dish of glitter we like gold A pair if tongs A cake rack to let dry And a nice natural basket I dip each cone with tongs into the hot wax I hold it over the glitter plate and grandson spoons over some gold glitter very quickly as the wax dries quick and glitter won’t stick Place the cone in the rack When all are done ..,you have to work quickly as wax tends to solidify quickly, though you can of course re melt Place the cones in the basket, we line the basket with some small laye4 if fir branches Then I tie a nice piece of twine ribbon around the basket and place by the fire The best fire lighters ever and apart from the glitter , they are virtually free and look very pretty sitting by the fire, and you only need one per fire, and I have a big fire !

The organization 4OCEAN really brought home to me the critical state our world is in with waste. It used to really bug me as a kid walking to school or being out with friends the trash on the street and highways. I was constantly picking it up and disposing of it when I got home. That was before we became so germ conscious. It drives me bonkers that people think cigarette butts are ok to just leave wherever they get squashed out! Pick the nasty thing up and put it in the bin! So my point is that I try not to buy much that will just end up as trash. It takes more effort but we only get one earth. Thanks for sharing your tips with all of us.

If you have multiple face lotions, like the example that she used, you're going to be using less of each type, and it should come out to the same amount of lotion in the end. How does eliminating all but one reduce waste? That doesn't make any sense to me.

How do you buy food to refill your jars? Beans, flour, rice, etc. Everything here is sold in plastic.

I know it is so hard if you don't have access to zero waste shops. We have some markets here and some online shops that delivers to your door. The best you can do is try find food in paper packaging and/or buy the biggest bag you can find.

Is it just you or you and your family that do this? No criticism, just asking.

haha that's a great question.. thanks for asking... my husband and I have very similar values.. It does help but I never force my way on others. I just share the information...

It's a nice goal to try to reach but it's not realistic to think the average person can be 100% zero waste, especially if you have children.

so right! no such thing as zero waste anyway... just the best you can do is perfect and remember its millions doing it imperfectly that is better than a few perfectly!

I live I. The U.S and I do buy paper plates and plastic utensils because with the president we got stuck with I am terribly afraid we will not have an economy or electricity so I am sticking up on these things as well as starting on container gardening

I am not zero waste. But i am really careful about recycling. We have a really nice recycling thing in my city, so it's really nice I think.
