Someone made my mom one who suffered from dementia before she passed 2 years ago. I loved it! Mom really liked it too! She kept it on on lap. Like you said…they only need to be the size of a lap quilt, not very big, kinda like a baby size. It’s a wonderful thing and it really passes their time. It keep them busy as the mind wanders when one is in that state. It would be a great project for a sewing group.

Tracy, This is so wonderful! I have a brother & brother n love that this Fidget Quilt will be excellent! One is a bit cold most of the time, so I am going to put this in the middle of a lite throw. Both used to enjoy NASCAR races, so I think I am going to try your theme concept. But I really gotta work my mind to come up with ideas. Thank you for loving & caring for others! You are sent from our Lord to me!

IDEA: Sew some grosgrain ribbon on opposite sides. If the user is seated in a wheelchair, you can tie it to the chair so it doesn't fall off of their laps.

I love this! I made one for my mother who is in a nursing home a few hours away. Mom was one to create too and I had many of her scraps. One of those scraps was an applique horse head with fake fur for the mane. Another scrap was some fancy purple lingerie lace while another was a piece of seersucker. I used a few zippers and buttons as well as a pocket from my jeans and a yolk and waistband area that I laced a bandana through as a belt. It's amazing to see everyone's different ideas as well as hearing the thought process of these ideas. Keep it up ♥️

Hi Tracy, I belong to a group of wonderful ladies that get together about 4 times a year to make Fidget quilts. They are all donated to nursing homes, etc. We have made close to 2,0000. I have made about 90 myself. All of the fabric and embellishments are donated. (Sometimes I buy odds and ends of trims at Goodwill, etc. to use and share) We have strict rules about what can and cannot be used (nothing loose and no buttons) and they have to be washable. I like to use some crinkly squares in each quilt. I like to make them colourful and use a variety of fabrics with textures. We make ours using 16 - 8 & 1/2 squares. I really enjoy making them. Thanks for sharing your ideas. 👏❤️

I was listening and I thought at my Alzheimer's patients. So we very Catholic or Christian and love to pray. Sometimes they didn't remember the words but the pleasure to hold their chaplet make them calm. But the problem they lost them everywhere. So, maybe a good idea to sew one on that quilt, the way that it stays there!! On the one you did, the buttons that you fix can be done the way to fix the chaplet or find colours for the chaplet!!

Tracy, I have been making fidget blankets off/on for years. I have a lot of neuro divergency in my family, and as you stated, these can really help. I got some new ideas from you today!! Thank you!!! And just couple ideas for you, the skinny round elastic- if your put a small knot in the end and then leave the knot inside the seam allowance, it not only adds another layer of security, it also adds bumps which some people like to rub similar to a worry stone. And if you make each unit smaller you can turn them into a book. My machine wont go through that many layers, so I used cam snaps to snap each "page" together. But if you wanted them permanantly together you could use grommets and key rings. The background quilting is an excellent idea!! Not only does it help hold the layers together and secure the ends of the fidgets, it adds texture, which people like to run their fingers over or scratch w their fingertips or nails.

@@TheSewingChannel You're so welcome!! I love making fidget blankets/books/mats!! A couple more fun ones are fidget cubes for kids, I use denim as the base. And have you ever seen the self binding hexi's?? I made a bunch of them w different textures ( minky, fleece, flannel, silky fabric, cotton etc) and then sewed together in a flower shape like a grandmas garden flower for a toddler who loved different textures. It fit very well on the high chair tray and gave him something to play with and explore while mom was cooking dinner. I used as many different colors as I could, and she used it to teach him basic colors as well. And bc its soft and floppy was also a favorite naptime cuddle item.

i do way to many hobbies, but quilting, crochet and card making are my favorites, However my daughter doesn't like the quilting, becvauase it takes up so much room . I make tons of tops but seldom put them together in a quilt, but plan to just donate the tops to the local quilt guild who donate a quilt for each mother and child who aare in the battered women's shelter. they get to choose a quilt. baby sized, twin oer queen. I went nuts anad cut strips out of a lot of my fabric, which had been in stgorage for four years since my quilting friend died. I just didn't have the heart to quilt for awhile. Now I am whipping otu strip quilts, stacked coin, and the pattern with strips in blocks pointed different ways, log cabin, and things like that. just to get the old fabric out of the way. my friendf and I used to have a little business making cat nap quilts, which aare small quilts with cat fabric, and wild borders with cat nip and a cat nip toy on a strip. . I made 27 iof them and will donate them to the cat shelter where people who adob t a cat can choose a free quilt , or the cat adobtion can sell them. I don't care which was. lol. so to answer your question . YOU BET, I love quilting and sewing.

Just a suggestion, use latex free elastics, especially if donating to a health care facility. Elastic can cause a reaction in people allergic to the latex/natural rubber in it, thats how I found out I am allergic. Fold over elastic comes in many colors and can be easy to find without latex. ❤

Thank you for the kind words❣️The company is called Arrow. It was really expensive $300 chair. To be honest though…. I don’t really like it. I spent so much on it that I keep using it. I will replace hopefully soon🤷🏻‍♀️

From what I know they are extremely helpful for patients with dementia /alzheimers. There are groups that make them in mass and donate to hospitals and nursing homes❤️

Have you ever made one with a heavier insert so it becomes a weighted lap blanket?

My mom and best friend passed away from Alzheimer’s. I have friends who have autistic children. Is there anything I should not use on this quilt. I have a group of friends who have agreed to help make this to give to memory care homes and nursing homes. Let me know what you think. Love your channel.

So sweet that you would like to make these for others. There are groups out there that make these all the time for donations.....I don't personally know of any though. But I do think there are restrictions on what to put on their fidget quilts. (here in my comments some have said they don't put buttons on...) Check on google..I bet you will definitely find a group to tie into that will have info for ya....Happy Sewing❣️
