Those are both nice machines. You're right that you don't need a lot of bells and whistles to begin sewing. I learned on an old black Singer... my mom sewed most of her life on it... and she was a professional seamstress when she was young. It had a straight stitch - that was it. With stretch fabrics it is great (and really necessary) to have a zig zag or a stretch stitch, of course... and a built in buttonhole and a bunch of both decorative and useful stitches? Those allow for sewing just about anything you want. They both seem like great machines for beginners and beyond.

Those old black singers are such nice and heavy duty machines. I want to find a nice vintage one that is in working condition some day. I sewed on a featherweight once and wow! They are very cool. A sturdy machine with a few nice stitches can get you a long way.
