I think I may just be able to cope with this. I like that you knit how I do. It all seems to be continental fancy pants knitiing. I learned in primary school and haven't knitted since then, so I basically started over again. This COVID lock down boredom has got me learning again. One good thing to come out of all this!

Thank you for being clear and giving many videos to explain the details of how to do it.

Hi Tina, firstly let me say thank you for this beginner sock tutorial series. Like others, I have been intimidated to make socks after considering DPNs and magic loop, but your method of using the 9” circular has been a game changer for me. I’m getting on pretty well and am knitting along for the length of the foot before stopping for the toe decrease section. I have a question about the foot length, please. I’m making the medium size like you are doing and the pattern says “knit every round until the foot measures 1 3/4 (for medium) inches short of the desired length”. Maybe you’re supposed to measure the top of your foot from the bend to the tip of the toes, but that seems tricky so I’m measuring the bottom of my foot from the back of the heel to the tip of the big toe. That measurement on my foot is almost 10 inches. So my plan is to knit the foot to 8 1/4 inches from the back of the sock heel. Then I would start the toe decrease section. Does this make sense or am I making a mistake? (Since we are both making the medium size, I’m wondering if you knitted the same length that I’m planning on?)

Hi, don't panic 😁 lay your sock out in front as if wearing them , make sure they are straight from the heel . Place your beginning of round marker on the right side then count 32 stitches and place another on the left . Make sure it's not twisting round and is even and your all set . This is an important lesson when knitting in the round , always keep your BOR marker in 😘

Thank you Tina for that tutorial. Very helpful. I will have to practise though as I made a mess of the Kitchener stitch on the first sock. I knitted the bind off on the second sock and it turned out perfectly. Except....my toe bind off does not line up; it’s off kilter. It lines up when I lay the sock on its side. I obviously put the markers in the wrong places. Not sure how to make sure that doesn’t happen again. How do I line up properly when decreasing for toes?
@Simplyinstitches6 жыл бұрын
Always keep you marker in for the beginning of the row. That is how you know where to start the heel and the toe. So sorry you had problems but you will know so much more for next time. When doing the toe next time make sure the decreases are at the sides in relation to the heel position ;D

Hi Tina, can't thank you enough for this series! I have used them again and again. I was curious...with the slip slip knit on the toe decrease, you slip the knit way, instead of the pearl way as we've done during the rest of the sock making. Is there a reason for this? And, in the event I automatically slipped the pearl way on accident, does it matter? Just curious.

Hi Tina, Thanks for making these videos they are so helpful but I have a problem. Where should the stitch markers be for the toe decreases. Should one be at the start of the round? It is probably a really stupid question but I had 2 markers doing the gusset and now I don't know if I should remove them. Thanks again.
@Simplyinstitches7 жыл бұрын
You should have one marker at the beginning of the round and another at 32 stitches (if you are knitting a 64 stitch sock) . You will be decreasing both sides of the sock and so creating the toe shape. I hope this is clear for you

Some people make them out of cardboard but you don't have to have them. They make the socks look nicer off the foot . You can just dry them smoothed out and flat. These videos have been very helpful for me with knitting my first pair of socks, but I do have a quick question. How were you able to determine the start of the row? I used three stitch markers while doing the decreases for the gusset. The mark of the beginning where we started to pick up the stitches, where the first decrease was, and the last decrease was. But how would you find the actual beginning so the toe decrease isn't turned differently from the heal?
@Simplyinstitches6 жыл бұрын
The start of the row stitch marker is always the same one through the sock. It's always on the right side of the foot. This is your starting point for the toes, the same as the heel.

Hi Tina I just want to know how many stitches we have left after all decreases are done
@linseyspolidoro51224 жыл бұрын
It would be either 24, 28, or 32 depending on which size you are knitting. If you are knitting the medium size (the one she is knitting in the videos) it would be 28 stitches left after all the decreases. I’m knitting the small size and it took me 8 decrease rows (16 total with the knit rows in between) to get to the correct amount of stitches. So I believe it would be 9 decrease rows (18 total) for the medium size. Hope that helps.
@oonagh28114 ай бұрын
How do you guage where to place the stitch markers for the toe decrease ??
@Simplyinstitches4 ай бұрын
@@oonagh2811 You use your original markers from your heel decreases. If you have taken these out ( always keep your Beginning Of Round marker on every project ) lay your sock in front of you as if to put it on . Smooth it out flat so the heel is in position and is lined up as it would be wearing. Your markers go at each side , with 32 stitches between (BOR marker on the right , 32 stitches along the top of the foot , left marker 32 Stitches along the bottom of foot ) make sure the foot is straight with the heel . I hope this helps , good luck 😃

@Simplyinstitches6 жыл бұрын
Hi sorry to confuse you. I always remove the second marker and just keep the start of the row. The second one is not needed through the foot. I just count 32 stitches and replace when I need to do the toes. It just saves moving an unneeded marker every row. Leave in or take out are both fine, the choice is yours. Always keep your start of row marker so you know where you are ;D

If you lay your sock in front of you as if wearing, smooth it flat . This should give you an indication wear your sides are. Start of row marker on the right, and another on the left . When you knit in the round never ever take out the beginning of the row. I hope this helps ,good luck.

I'm a bit of a perfectionist and these socks are to be a gift. My friend is amazed and very appeciative of my crafts. Love your videos, Deb. Va. Beach, Va. USA

At 18:38 on your video, you began the dec row with a k1 ssk and slipped the stitches purlwise but in your previous dec rows you demonstrate ssk with knitwise slips. Will that make a difference in the finished edge?
@Simplyinstitches7 жыл бұрын
I don't think it matters with SSK I have not noticed a difference. I'm not an expert so could be wrong and please correct me if I am, so I can pass the information on. I will look into it but I am sure it creates the same stitch. Thank you for your question, happy knitting

How do I know where to put the stitch markers to begin the toe? Help!
@Simplyinstitches6 жыл бұрын
You should have your start of row marker. 32 stitches after this is the other marker. If you have no markers lay your sock as if wearing it right side up. Flatten it out and place a marker on each side . Make sure your heel is in the right position or your foot will be twisted. Good luck

I know this may be a silly question but when you do stocking stick with knit 1row and purl 1row and you seem to be knitting every row. Is it because you are knitting in the round?
@Simplyinstitches7 жыл бұрын
Yes, knitting in the round creates the stocking stitch with just knit stitch ;D
@hebulanebula Жыл бұрын
Do you just knit around in the last round?
@Simplyinstitches Жыл бұрын
Yes end on a knit round . Well done you're nearly there 😃

At the end of video 6 there were 2 stitch markers but at the beginning of video 7 there is only 1! Have I missed something?
@Simplyinstitches7 жыл бұрын
I prefer to just keep the beginning of the round marker when knitting the straight foot. I then count 32 and replace it for the toe decreases ;D

How and when would you do a different toe and heal color?
@Simplyinstitches8 жыл бұрын
I'm going to include this in the next sock sock tutorials. I'm going to have a video next week to see to plan our next knit

Thank you very much! Your videos are very helpful and have gotten me all the way to the heel flap so far! Now I just need to finish socks and move one to a sweater...

Magic loop was hard. :( I was so worried about a hole that I made it so tight it was almost impossible to move the stitches along the needle. As a beginner that was tough but oh well.

Hello, would you tell me the size of your needles thank you.
@Simplyinstitches6 жыл бұрын
I use 2.25mm 9" with 64 stitches for my UK size 6 foot

I like you videos, but I think doing the toes on the little needles is soooooooo difficult!
@Simplyinstitches5 жыл бұрын
You could try a square toe so you have more stitches. I don't like the look so much off the foot but they are a good fit on.

Basically, I am finding these videos to be wonderful, but I got very lost at the end of heel gusset due to your incessant chatter. It would be more helpful if you were to say "End of Row x" or "Beginning of Row Y" so that we could be sure we were in the correct place. Thank you for all the work you have put into this. I am sharing these videos with my knitting group who are now making tube socks. You have taken the fear out of sock making.
