9/18/23 update!
Hey everyone, an easy way to support my channel is to shop at Sweetwater using this link: sweetwater.sjv...
Thank you !
6/29/23 update!
I can't believe this little video is still going and GOING! Guys, thanks for watching - it means a lot. I've 500+ videos but this was one of the first and I didn't even originally make it for KZbin. I know it looks like it was made in 1984 instead of 2012, believe me. But the content is still very cool.
Please join me on Saturdays at 5pm ET for my free KZbin Guitar Q+A livestream. Just text your questions about learning the guitar and I'll answer as many as I can in about 2 hours. If you can't make it on Saturdays, the livestreams are available to watch afterwards and soon I'll be making them into podcasts as well. I look forward to your questions!
And if you're serious about getting better at the guitar, check out my website www.song-bike.com. Lots of great content and PDFs - stuff NOT AVAILABLE on KZbin.
I do online lessons too. Email me : info@song-bike.com
This episode teaches how to move open-position chords up the neck to create new "voicings" of chords. Guitar players do this to create new tones and options when playing with a second guitar player who IS playing the open-position chords. Also, these up-the-neck chords are useful in band situations where open-position chords can be too boomy or jangly to fit the song.

This is what should be taught to a beginner the day they form their first chord. It illustrates what the fret board (WWHWWWH )chord recipe MEANS on the fret board and gives us newbies a a tool for playing along with other musicians...SOLID GOLD Jonathan. Thank you.

Just wanted to say thank you for posting your videos. I am learning at age 60 plus and it is a bit of struggle on finger flexibility but I am improving with practice. Your teaching style is superb, you are very clear and show exactly how to do things and offer lots of little tips that make all the difference. You have been a lot of help to me and I think you are one of the best teachers that I have come across on the web. Thanks, Ady from Cornwall in the UK.

Holy cow!! I have been looking for you all my life!! My guitar "career" started when I was just a wee thing and my uncle taught me an open G chord. Showed me a little country/western strumming pattern, and I have been attempting to learn to play ever since. I can't learn all the other ways for whatever reason - you just made this a billion times easier!! I hear so much creative music in my head, but while I can pick it out on the piano (though I play classical) it is always something that will sound better on the guitar. I left the lessons on the guitar alone, because the piano lessons "killed" that creative streak. Your method is FANTASTIC for someone like me! You show where to go without losing the shape and THAT keeps the door open for creativity! Thank you SO VERY MUCH!! *subscribed for life!!* (Or at least as long as KZbin's life lol)

I don't class myself as a beginner, but self teaching and improving via youtube (until lockdown is lifted and I can afford a local teacher) I do move chords around a bit because they sound good, but I had no idea how to find out what these chords are. The example using D major moving it up to become G then A, is a real light bulb moment!! Many thanks☺

I was wondering if we move the d “shape” up to the first fret if that’s a C chord? But I’m with you, old vid but this guy is really good, I’ve watched 3 of his vids so far, the on the blues is pretty cool. At 62 I’m just starting to learn, it’s my retirement plan, and you tube sure helps a whole lot🎸🎸🎸

Cool lesson! In his new book, "A Spy in the House of Love," Chris Stamey discusses how playing up and down the neck with the open B and E strings droning is a signature technique of what later became known as "jangle pop" as done by Big Star, the dB's, and R.E.M. Glad to see you discuss the technique here!

Don't be afraid of also playing the open D string. It certainly goes with the D chord - it's the root. It will change the E chord into an E7 chord, and it fits well with the G chord also as you go up the neck with the D shape, since D is a chord tone of the G major chord.

I finally got enough basics under the belt for this not to fry my brain. LOL Weeeee! What an eye opener. Thank you so much! It finally makes sense...finally means something. It means I'll be able to go up and down the fretboard and not be locked into just the first 5 frets. 🎈🎉❤️😁

Johnathan, I just found your videos today and have to say I'm digging your approach! At age 54 I'm recovering from carpel tunnel surgery in my left hand and facing the same in my right. This video and the classic blues riff video are the only ones I've watched so far but what therapy not only for my left hand but the soul. When my left hand starts cramping I'm going back to the blues riff video to give it a bit of a rest. Thank you for posting these videos and reminding my that I'm not working my guitar, I'm PLAYING it!!

I’m a newbie to the guitar although I’ve been playing piano for a while and understand theory. But barre chords have been elusive and this up-the-neck method is brilliant to let me play any chord I want to while still learning barre chords gradually. Looking forward to many more of your videos.

Thank you Mr. Kehew a few years ago a good friend of mine gave me a guitar and told me to learn how to play it. That I’m doing so it would help me through my journey battling a couple cancers that suddenly became an issue. Your lessons were part of my medicine. After 4 years now I’m cancer free. I also have learned enough guitar to go back through my lessons. This one was a big boost, once I learned the regular chords . Thank you sir.

What a terrific video. In 30 minutes you explained something that has confounded me for years. I am so grateful! One burning question: if each 'grip' can make any chord, and I have a friend playing a song the regular boring way (the song chords are G, Em, C, D), how do I decide which grip to use to explore up the neck?
@jkehew1
@jkehew1 4 жыл бұрын
Good news/bad news, Scott: you choose any grip you want! But better to have too many options than not enough or none. I'm confused. I know how to play the open chords and always wanted to learn how to play them up the neck and I get it with you doing it with the D shape but with e major I thought you have to bar it off when you go up? I'm always curious what chords people are playing up the neck. This is confusing to me as I know all the pentatonic scales and can solo but I need some juicy chords. So I'm a little confused because I thought you bar stuff off when you go up? Sorry
@jkehew1

What would make his videos better would be if he also told us which finger was the root of the chord (D finger down 2 lands on E down 1 lands on F down 2 lands on G, etc...) so people would also understand music theory and how that is laid out on the neck. If I know in the C chord the ring finger is on D then I should easily understand down 2 lands on E down 1 lands on F down 2 lands on G, etc... or which finger is on C in the C chord slid down 2 is now on D, etc...
